Vancouver Canucks @ Edmonton Oilers Tips

The Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers clash for the 8th time in 2021 on Friday, May 7 when the two meet in an NHL regular-season matchup from the all-Canadian North Division. A recent run of six-straight defeats has seen Vancouver slump to the bottom of the North Division, while the Oilers are second in the table, behind only the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Despite reaching the status of mid-table not too long ago, and claiming the scalps of every team in the division, terrible defending has seen Vancouver lose 28 matches this season, and concede 156 goals. They have won only 19 games – the fewest in the division – and scored 123 goals – the least in the division.

By comparison, the Oilers are only six points behind division leaders Toronto, with 32 wins against 19 defeats. The Oilers tally of 167 goals is second only to that of the Maple Leafs, and their 135 goals conceded is the lowest in the division. Edmonton are 7-3 in their last 10 games, while Vancouver are the opposite – 3-7.

I’m backing the Oilers to defeat the Canucks on Friday, but I’m also tempted to put a sneaky bet on Vancouver to pull off the upset. Why? Because they are certainly capable of doing it, and the odds will be great.

  • Edmonton 2nd in NHL North Division
  • Edmonton 32-19 this season
  • Vancouver 7th in NHL North Division
  • Vancouver 19-28 this season

Head to Head

The Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers have played each other 101 times in NHL regular season games. Currently, the Canucks lead this head-to-head by 58-43. In 11 meetings over the past two seasons, Edmonton have a 7-4 edge. The Canucks and the Oilers have played each other seven times already in 2021, with the score currently 5-2 to the Oilers. In their most recent match on May 5, the Edmonton Oilers were victorious 4-1.

Edmonton Oilers Form

The Edmonton Oilers are second in the NHL North Division with 66 points from 51 games, six points less than North Division leaders the Toronto Maple Leafs. For much of the season, Edmonton dueled with the Winnipeg Jets for second place, with the Jets holding the Oilers off until recently. Now however, a nine point gap separates them. Interestingly, Edmonton are currently in 12th place in the NHL league, with the top 12 ranked teams progressing to the playoffs.

Right now, Edmonton are playing with solid if unspectacular consistency, and they have lost just three of their last 12 games. They are currently in the middle of a four-match series with the Vancouver Canucks, and have won the first two games, most recently defeating Vancouver 4-1 on Wednesday.

Vancouver Canucks Form

Unfortunately for fans of Vancouver, the Canucks are heading for a sixth-straight season of mediocrity, having not reached the playoffs since 2015. The sad thing is that the top four in the North Division are Toronto, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Montreal, and the Canucks have beaten all of them in 2021. In fact, they have defeated the division leaders Toronto four times.

Vancouver are currently on a pitiful run of six straight losses, and haven’t won a match since defeating Ottawa 4-2 on April 25. The last time the Canucks defeated Edmonton was mid-March, and only by a narrow 2-1 scoreline. Vancouver are currently 0-2 down against the Oilers in a four-match series, losing to them 4-1 on Wednesday.

Our live streaming calendar shows you where you can watch a Vancouver Canucks @ Edmonton Oilers live stream

The Edmonton Oilers are currently on course to reach the playoffs for the second straight year. The Vancouver Canucks haven’t been in that position since 2015. On their day however Vancouver are a decent team, and they have beaten everybody in the NHL North Division, Edmonton included.

I’m backing Edmonton to defeat Vancouver on Friday, in a match featuring around eight goals in total. My pick for Anytime Goalscorer is Edmonton’s no.1 hitman Connor McDavid who should add to his 31 goal tally. However, I may also have a cheeky five bucks on the Canucks to spring an upset, because regardless of their position, they are still dangerous.
