Toronto Maple Leafs @ Vancouver Canucks Tips

The NHL North Division leaders the Toronto Maple Leafs will attempt to end a four-match losing streak when they take on the Vancouver Canucks in a regular-season game on Wednesday, April 21. This will be the seventh time these two teams have played each other this season, with the score tied at 3-3.

While Toronto have topped the all-Canadian North Division for most of the season, their position is under serious threat following successive defeats to Montreal, Calgary, Winnipeg and most recently, Vancouver, who defeated them on Monday in an overtime shootout.

That string of defeats has seen Toronto slide down the NHL league, from top spot to seventh, although in reality they are only three points behind joint leaders the Vegas Golden Knights and the Colorado Avalanche.

I’m backing the Toronto Maple Leafs to cut that deficit to a point on Wednesday with a long overdue win over the Vancouver Canucks. The Maple Leafs will win this game by at least two clear goals in a high-scoring match that will feature around seven goals in total.

  • Toronto top of NHL North Division
  • Toronto 28-17 this season
  • Vancouver 6th in NHL North Division
  • Vancouver 17-21 this season

Head to Head

The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vancouver Canucks have played each other a total of 29 times in NHL regular season games. Currently, the Canucks lead this head-to-head by 17 wins to 12. In eight meetings over the past two seasons, Toronto lead 5-3. However, in the six matches they have played in 2021, Vancouver are tied with Toronto 3-3. In their most recent matchup, the Canucks defeated the Maple Leafs 3-2 in April.

Toronto Maple Leafs Form

One has to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a ton of credit; despite intense pressure from the Winnipeg Jets and the Edmonton Oilers for most of the season, Toronto are still top of the North Division, and remain one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup. However their season is now in serious jeopardy following four successive defeats.

After beginning April with six straight victories, Toronto were defeated 4-2 by the Montreal Canadiens in what was only their second loss in 11 matches. That result was soon followed by successive losses to Calgary, Winnipeg and most recently Vancouver, who defeated them 3-2 in overtime shootout on Monday (April 19).

Vancouver Canucks Form

The Vancouver Canucks have played 38 games this season, winning 17 and losing 21. Vancouver hold multiple games in hand over every other team in the North Division. If they were to win the seven games in hand they have over Toronto, they would leapfrog from their current sixth place to fourth, 5 points behind 3rd placed Edmonton.

While Vancouver have underperformed in general this season, that hasn’t been the case when they have come up against the best team in the division. After losing their first three matches against Toronto in February, the Canucks defeated them twice in March, and on Monday (April 19) they beat the Maple Leafs yet again via a 3-2 overtime shootout.

Verdict

For most of 2021 the Toronto Maple Leafs looked on course to possibly win their first Stanley Cup since 1967. However the loss of four straight matches at this stage of the season could severely damage their confidence, especially if it were to continue.

I’m backing Toronto to snap that streak at the expense of the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday. I’m picking the Maple Leafs to defeat the Canucks by at least two clear goals in a high-scoring matchup that will feature around seven goals in total. My pick for Anytime Goalscorer is Toronto's Auston Matthews.
