Toronto Maple Leafs @ Vancouver Canucks Tips

The best team in the NHL this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the Vancouver Canucks in an all-Canadian North Division regular-season game on Friday, March 5. This will be the fourth time these two teams have played each other this season, with Toronto 3-0 up.

The Maple Leafs have won seven of their last 10 games, including a three match series against North Division leadership rivals the Edmonton Oilers which they won 3-0.

Historically, Toronto have won the Stanley Cup 13 times, second only in number two the Montreal Canadiens. However, the Maple Leafs haven’t lifted the trophy since 1967. This season Toronto appear to have the team to end that 54-year drought, and deliver the Stanley Cup to their fans, albeit virtually.

I’m backing Toronto to take another step closer to that achievement with a convincing win over Vancouver on Friday. The Maple Leafs will win this game by at least three clear goals in a match that will feature a minimum of four goals.

  • Toronto top of NHL North Division
  • Toronto 18-6 this season
  • Vancouver 6th in NHL North Division
  • Vancouver 9-17 this season

Head to Head

The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vancouver Canucks have played each other a total of 26 times in NHL regular season games. Currently, the Canucks lead this head-to-head by 14 wins to 12. However, in their seven meetings since the beginning of 2019, Toronto have been dominant, winning six and losing just one. In their most recent match in February of this season, the Maple Leafs won 3-1.

Toronto Maple Leafs Form

In an NHL season in which most teams have struggled to find a level of consistency, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been rock solid. They established themselves early in the season as the best team in the league and have never once surrendered that position.

Toronto have played 24 games this season, winning 18 and losing six, although two of those were over-time shootouts in which they earned a point both times. Toronto are 7-3 in their last 10 games, and currently enjoying a four match winning streak.

At the end of February Toronto began a three match series against the Edmonton Oilers, the team which had started the season poorly but rallied in February to become the number two team in the North Division and one of the best in the NHL.

However, while on paper what appeared to be a tough test for Toronto turned into a rout, with the Maple Leaps winning all three games convincingly, the last on Thursday (March 4) 6-1.

Vancouver Canucks Form

The Vancouver Canucks have played 26 games in the NHL regular season, winning nine and losing 17 (including two overtime shootouts). Vancouver have lost seven of their last 10 games, and in their most recent match were beaten 5-2 by Winnipeg.

After posting a winning record of 6-5 in January, Vancouver have been in freefall ever since, losing six straight games at the start of February, and have only won one of their last six games. The Canucks have lost all three of their games against the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, conceding 18 goals and scoring eight.

Verdict

It would take a brave man to bet against the Toronto Maple Leafs going into this fixture; they have been the best team in the NHL all season, and have already beaten the Vancouver Canucks convincingly three times.

For me the only thing to debate is the manner of victory for Toronto. I’m backing the Maple Leafs to win this game by at least three clear goals, in a match that will feature a minimum of four goals.
