San Jose Sharks vs Arizona Coyotes Tips

The San Jose Sharks take on the Arizona Coyotes in an all-NHL West Division clash on Saturday, March 27, with a second game scheduled for Sunday. San Jose and Arizona have played each other twice this year, in their first two matches of the season back in January. The Coyotes won the first via a 4-3 overtime shootout, while the Sharks won the second 5-3.

Since then both teams have struggled to find their best form, and neither looks likely to be competing in the playoffs come the end of the regular season. Arizona are 5th in the West Division, while the Sharks are second from bottom. In terms of their records there is very little to split these two teams, but I’m backing San Jose to win Saturday’s game, as they are that bit hungrier, and go into this matchup off the back of two wins.

  • Arizona 5th in NHL West Division
  • Arizona 14-19 this season
  • San Jose 7th in NHL West Division
  • San Jose 13-18 this season

Head to Head

The San Jose Sharks and the Arizona Coyotes have played each other a total of 89 times in NHL regular season games. Currently, the Sharks lead their head-to-head by 53 wins to 36. In their last nine games since the start of the 2018-19 season Arizona lead 5-4. In their most recent game in January this year, the Arizona Coyotes were victorious 5-3.

San Jose Sharks Form

The San Jose Sharks are second from bottom of the NHL West Division, a position they seem to have held for some weeks now. San Jose have played 31 games, winning 13 and losing 18, four of which were overtime shootouts. The Sharks have 30 points, six more than the team below them, the Anaheim Ducks.

Prior to March 9, the Sharks found it impossible to put two wins together, but they then proceeded to win three consecutively, and even though they promptly lost their next four games, they have since won their last two matches, both over the Los Angeles Kings, 2-1 on Tuesday (March 23) and 4-2 on Thursday. Key for San Jose in both those games was their goaltender Martin Jones, who began this season shakily and drew a lot of criticism, but has weathered the storm and since proved what a great goalie he is.

Arizona Coyotes Form

The Arizona Coyotes are currently fifth in the NHL West Division, with 33 points from 33 games of which they have won 14 and lost 19, five via overtime shootouts. Arizona are one of the lowest scoring teams in the NHL this season with 83 goals, and only seven teams (out of 31) have scored less.

The Coyotes are in the process of recovering from losing five-straight matches in the past two weeks, vs the Colorado Avalanche, the Minnesota Wild (x3) and the Anaheim Ducks. They have since won two of their last three, most recently defeating the Colorado Avalanche 5-4 (SO) on Wednesday (March 24).

Verdict

It’s so difficult to split the San Jose Sharks and Arizona Coyotes for the purpose of picking a match winner and loser. Literally one win and one defeat separates them, and even their head-to-head this year is 1-1.

That said, I’m backing the Sharks to beat the Coyotes on Saturday. As the team faced with finishing rock bottom this season, they have that bit more to play for, plus they go into this game with the positivity of winning their last two games. San Jose will win this game by two goals, in a match that will feature 5 goals. The Sharks’ Evander Kane is my pick for anytime goalscorer.
