San Jose Sharks @ Colorado Avalanche Tips

The San Jose Sharks and the Colorado Avalanche meet in an all-NHL West Division clash on Saturday, May 1. This will be the fifth time these two teams have faced each other this season, with Colorado currently leading 3-1. This game will be the first of a series of four consecutive matches between the two that finishes next Thursday.

The Colorado Avalanche are currently second in the NHL West Division, six points behind the leaders the Vegas Golden Knights. There is no disgrace in that, as Vegas are also statistically the best team in the NHL this season. Less impressive in their current position are the San Jose Sharks, who despite winning their last two games find themselves still sixth in the West Division.

Colorado will go into this fixture against San Jose off the back of three consecutive defeats, losing to St. Louis (twice) as well as Vegas. Meanwhile the Sharks have recently enjoyed back-to-back victories over the Arizona Coyotes, a welcome return to the win-column after suffering eight consecutive defeats.
Based off these results, I’m backing the still-buzzing San Jose Sharks to defeat the thrice-beaten Colorado Avalanche on Saturday in a game that will feature around eight goals.

  • San Jose 6th in NHL West Division
  • San Jose 20-29 this season
  • Colorado 2nd in NHL West Division
  • Colorado 31-16 this season

Head to Head

The Colorado Avalanche and the San Jose Sharks have played each other a total of 62 times in NHL regular season games. Currently, San Jose lead their head-to-head by 38 wins to 24. In 12 matches since the start of the 2018 NHL season, Colorado are 7-5 up. In four matches played this season, Colorado lead 3-1, the most recent being a 4-0 win in March.

San Jose Sharks Form

The San Jose Sharks have only been in existence since 1991, and in 2016 they were beaten in the Stanley Cup finals by the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2. The Sharks have won six West Division titles, plus the 2015-16 Western Conference. However, although they finished the 2018-19 regular season second in the Western Conference, last year they finished rock bottom of the table.

Right now San Jose are sixth in the West Division having played 49 games, winning 20 and losing 29, five of which were overtime shootouts. The Sharks are on 45 points, just two behind the Arizona Coyotes. On Tuesday the Sharks managed to end their nightmare eight-match losing streak by defeating Arizona 6-4, and on Thursday they proved that was no fluke by beating the Coyotes again 4-2.

Colorado Avalanche Form

Colorado finished the 2020 regular season 2nd in the Western Conference, so they are on course to repeat that achievement. During the 2020 NHL playoffs Colorado defeated Arizona 4-1, but were then knocked out by Dallas in the second round 4-3. The Avalanche have twice lifted the Stanley Cup, in 1996 and most recently in 2001.

Colorado are currently second in the NHL West Division, with 66 points from 47 games, six adrift of leaders Vegas. The Avalanche have scored 31 wins against 16 losses, 4 of those via overtime shootouts which earned them an additional point each time. Colorado are 6-4 in their last ten games, and prior to their recent run of three straight defeats, they had lost just once in 10 games.

Verdict

On Tuesday San Jose finally ended their 8-match losing streak with victory over Arizona 6-4, and on Thursday the Sharks beat the Coyotes again, this time 4-2. Meanwhile, Colorado have suffered three-straight losses, to St. Louis (twice) and Vegas.

Elite athletes and top coaches often tell us that much of what is achieved in competition is mental. Right now, the Sharks are in a state of controlled euphoria and looking forward to their next match, while Colorado are likely feeling frustrated and lacking confidence.

Because of those psychological factors plus their recent results, I’m backing the Sharks to defeat Colorado with another impressive performance in a game featuring around eight goals in total. San Jose’s Evander Kane is once again my choice for Anytime Goalscorer.
