Ottawa Senators @ Calgary Flames Tips
The Ottawa Senators and the Calgary Flames face each other for the fourth time this season when they meet on Friday, March 5. Despite being bottom of the NHL North Division and five points adrift of fifth placed Calgary, Ottawa leads their head-to-head this season 2-1.
The Senators began the season with one win in their first 10 games, but since mid February they have turned things around remarkably, winning eight of their last 12 games. It might be too late for Ottawa to make the playoffs but they are capable of at least climbing off the bottom of the North Division.
By comparison, Calgary have found it difficult to string a sequence of victories together, and they are 3-7 in their last 10 games. That's why I’m backing the Senators to win Friday’s match, defeating the Flames by at least two clear goals in a game that will feature six goals or less.
- Calgary are 5th in the NHL North Division
- Calgary are 10-13 this season
- Ottawa bottom of the NHL North Division
- Ottawa are 8-17 this season
Head to Head
The Ottawa Senators and the Calgary Flames have played each other 26 times in the NHL regular season. Right now, Calgary leads their head-to-head by 14 wins to 12. Since the beginning of 2018, these two teams have played each other eight times, with Calgary ahead by five wins to three.
However, the Flames and the Senators have already played each other three times this season, with Ottawa winning twice, including their most recent meeting earlier this week which they won 5-1.
Ottawa Senators Form
The Ottawa Senators have played 25 games so far this season, with eight wins and 17 defeats for a total of 17 points. They are currently bottom of the NHL North Division, three points adrift of the next team, the Vancouver Canucks.
Ottawa began the current season positively enough with a 5-3 win over Toronto, but they then suffered a horrendous run of nine successive defeats. A 3-2 win over Montreal was followed by four more defeats.
From mid-February onward however, the Senators have been a different team and their record since then is eight wins against four defeats.
Prior to Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat by Montreal, Ottawa played three consecutive games against Calgary, winning two of them. Friday’s game will be followed by a fifth vs the Flames on Monday.
Calgary Flames Form
The Calgary Flames are currently fifth in the NHL North division with 22 points. Calgary have won 10 and lost 13 games, although two of those defeats were after-time shootouts that earned them a point each time. The all-Canadian North Division was hastily constructed by the NHL as a means in which the Canadian teams were limited in their cross-border travel during the current pandemic.
Calgary and currently in the middle of a five-game series against Ottawa, with three games completed and two more to come, the first of which takes place on Friday. Calgary lost the first game 6-1, rebounded the following day to defeat them 6-3, but five days later they were defeated again by the Senators, this time 5-1.

Ottawa and Calgary have already played each other three times this season, with two more games to come and four more scheduled for the weeks ahead. Thus far, despite their lowly position in the North Division, the Senators have looked the better team, and both of their victories over the Flames were decisive.
Because of this, I'm backing the Ottawa Senators to defeat the Calgary Flames once again, this time by two clear goals in a game that will feature no more than six goals in total.
