New York Islanders vs Boston Bruins Live Stream & Tips

The New York Islanders will take on the Boston Bruins in the second game of their NHL Playoffs Second Round series on Tuesday, June 1. Both of these teams have had chapters devoted to them in the annals of Stanley Cup history, with 10 trophies and 25 final appearances between them. However while New York last lifted ice hockey’s most illustrious trophy in 1983, Boston won the Stanley Cup thrice in the past decade.

New York finished fourth in the NHL West Division, but their totals of 32 wins and 71 points were the highest of all fourth-placed teams. The Boston Bruins finished in third place with 33 wins and 73 points.  New York and Boston played each other eight times during the regular season, with the score 5-3 in the Islander’s favor.

Both teams dealt well with their first round opposition; Boston bounced back from a 0-1 deficit to thrash the Washington Capitals 4-1. New York trailed Pittsburgh 1-2, but won three straight games to clinch the series 4-2.

In the opening fixture of their second round series, the Bruins looked impressive defeating the Islanders 5-2. I’m backing Boston to beat New York again on Tuesday in a tighter game.

  • New York finished 4th in NHL East Division
  • New York finished 32-24 in 2021
  • Bruins finished 3rd in NHL East Division
  • Bruins finished 33-21 in 2021

Head to Head

The New York Islanders and the Boston Bruins have played each other a total of 59 times, with Boston leading this head-to-head 38-21. In their last 14 matches covering the last three seasons including 2021, the score is 8-6 in Boston’s favor.  In 2021 the Islanders and the Bruins played each other eight times, with the score 5-3 to New York. Their most recent meeting in May finished 3-2 to Boston.

New York Islanders Form

The New York Islanders showed the fighting spirit synonymous with their city by battling back from 2-1 down to win their opening series against the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2. Pittsburgh had finished top of the NHL East Division, while New York were fourth and grabbed the last playoff spot in that division. After winning the first game on an overtime goal, New York lost the next two games to Pittsburgh 2-1 and 5-4.

The Pirates were playing well and looked the likely series winners. However, the Islanders weren’t done yet, and they hit back with three-straight wins to seal the series 4-2. Now New York are taking on one of the true heavyweights of the NHL in the Boston Bruins. Boston are six-time Stanley Cup winners, most recently in 2019. New York are themselves four-time Stanley Cup holders, although their last win was in 1983, and their most recent finals was in 1984. In their opening game of this series, Boston defeated New York 5-2, with sloppy defending seeing the Islanders concede three goals in the third period of the match.

Boston Bruins Form

The Boston Bruins qualified for the NHL Playoffs by finishing 3rd in the NHL East Division with a 33-23 record. Boston were very impressive in their opening series of the NHL Playoffs, defeating the Washington Capitals 4-1. In that series, Boston faced the team that finished above them in the East Division, and lost the opening game 3-2. They then hit back an edged the next two games via overtime goals, before winning the final two games 4-1 and 3-1.

Now Boston take on the New York Islanders, who held a 5-3 lead over them in the regular season. The Islanders put out the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 in the opening round, an impressive performance as Pittsburgh had won the East Division and finished 5th in the NHL League. The winner of this series will go on to play either Carolina or Tampa in the Stanley Cup Semifinals. Boston made the perfect start on Sunday with a 5-2 win over Boston.

Verdict

The New York Islanders and the Boston Bruins have won 10 Stanley Cups between them, so this is a genuine heavyweight clash. Boston made an excellent start with a 5-2 win over New York on Sunday, but we saw the Islanders come back from a 1-2 deficit in their opening series to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Nevertheless I’m backing the Boston Bruins to gain a real foothold on this series with a second win on Tuesday, although this will be a much tighter game, and may even be decided by an aftertime goal. Boston hitman Brad Marchand is my pick for Anytime Goalscorer.
