Montreal Canadiens @ Winnipeg Jets Tips

The Montreal Canadiens and the Winnipeg Jets will face-off for the sixth time this season when the two meet on Thursday (March 18) in and NHL North Division regular season game. Winnipeg are currently second in the all-Canadian North Division, while Montreal are fourth.  This will the second in a two match series; on Tuesday the Canadiens pulled off something of an upset by beating the Jets 4-2.

I’m backing the Montreal Canadiens to repeat Tuesday’s success by scoring another victory over the Winnipeg Jets by a margin of two goals. Despite their difference in overall form and division rankings, Montreal have now beaten Winnipeg twice on the bounce. This game will feature six goals, with the Canadiens chief hitman Tyler Toffoli adding to his tally of 17 goals this season.

  • Winnipeg 2nd in NHL North Division
  • Winnipeg are 17-11 this season
  • Montreal 4th in NHL North Division
  • Montreal are 13-15 this season

Head to Head

The Montreal Canadiens and the Winnipeg Jets have faced each other a total of 45 times, with the Canadiens currently leading the head-to-head by 26 wins to 19. In nine meetings between these two teams over the past three seasons, Montreal have the edge 5-4. In their most recent match on Monday, March 16, Montreal were the victors 4-2.

Montreal Canadiens Form

The Montreal Canadiens are currently fourth in the NHL North Division, having played 28 matches, with 13 wins and 15 defeats, seven of which were overtime shootouts. Montreal have scored 90 goals and conceded 76, and their goal-difference of +14 is the second best in the North Division.

The Canadiens have been as high as second in the division, but in February they suffered a sequence of seven defeats in eight games which sent them spiraling down the table. Since the beginning of March, Montreal are a slightly improved 4-4, but were clear underdogs going into their first meeting of a two-game series vs the Winnipeg Jets on Monday. However, the Canadiens pulled off one of their best victories of the season so far, defeating the Jets 4-2.

Winnipeg Jets Form

The Winnipeg Jets are currently second in the NHL North Division with 17 wins and nine defeats, plus two losses in overtime shootouts which earned them a point each time. Winnipeg have been relentlessly consistent all season, and have only once suffered back-to-back defeats. The Toronto Maple Leafs may have been the division leaders all season, but if Winnipeg win their two games in hand, they will pull level and points at the top.

It was therefore something of an upset when Winnipeg were beaten on Tuesday by the Montreal Canadiens. In four previous meetings with Montreal this season, the Jets led 3-1, although the Canadiens had scored a stunning 7-1 win over them on March 7. However this time Winnipeg were going into this game fresh off a 5-2 victory over Toronto, and were full of confidence, which makes their 4-2 defeat to Montreal even more surprising.

Verdict

Are the Winnipeg Jets heading towards a crisis? Probably not, but the Montreal Canadiens might well be their bogey team this season. It didn’t look that way earlier this month when the Jets had won their first three games against the Canadiens, but they have now lost the last two convincingly, 7-1 and 4-2.

I’m backing Montreal to make it three on the bounce by defeating Winnipeg again on Thursday. Although undoubtedly erratic, the Canadiens’ most recent three wins have been a 7-1 win over the Jets, a 5-1 win over an in-form Vancouver Canucks and then Tuesday’s 4-2 victory over Winnipeg.
I’m picking Montreal to defeat Winnipeg conclusively by two clear goals in a match that will feature less than six goals. I’m also backing the Canadiens’ top scorer Tyler Toffoli to get on the score sheet.
