Montreal Canadiens @ Tampa Bay Lightning Live Stream & Tips

The Montreal Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning will face-off for game no.2 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Thursday, July 1. On Tuesday the reigning Stanley Cup holders Tampa Bay won the opening game of the finals by a convincing 5-1 scoreline. While this is the second consecutive Stanley Cup finals for Tampa, it’s Montreal’s first final since 1993.

Some of the greatest names in team sports have had long championship droughts. The most famous soccer team of them all, Real Madrid had to wait 38 years - from 1960 until 1998 – before adding to their tally of five European Cups (now Champions Leagues), but have now won 13.

The Montreal Canadiens are the most illustrious names in NHL history, with 24 Stanley Cup victories to their name. Some experts believe that should Montreal win, it will open the floodgates for many more Canadiens victories in the coming years.

However, first things first, and Montreal need to get their name on the scoreboard by whatever means necessary. I believe they will do just that on Thursday and I’m backing the Montreal Canadiens to defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning in a close game to level these finals at 1-1.

  • Tampa Bay finished 3rd in NHL Central Division
  • Tampa Bay scored 75 pts during regular season
  • Montreal finished 4th in NHL North Division
  • Montreal scored 59 pts in regular season

Head to Head

The Montreal Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning have played each other a total of 67 times in regular-season games. Currently Tampa Bay lead this head-to-head 37-30. In their last eight matches over the past three seasons, Tampa Bay lead 7-1. Because of restrictions brought about by the pandemic, these two teams didn’t play each other during the regular season in 2021.

Montreal Canadiens Form

The Montreal Canadiens began their journey to a first Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 28 years with an epic 4-3 victory over arch rivals the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round. That was followed by a 4-0 thrashing of the Winnipeg Jets and in the semifinals, then in the semifinals the Canadiens scored an upset 4-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights, many expert’s pick to go all the way this season. It was a stunning performance by a Canadiens team that only finished fourth in the NHL North Division with a record of 24 wins and 32 defeats.

Despite their losing record during the regular-season, Montreal have found their real form in the playoffs. Should the Canadiens get a win under their belt on Thursday, even Tampa Bay might find them unstoppable. Crucial for the Canadiens during these playoffs has been the incredible consistency shown by their 33-year old goalie Carey Price, rated by many as the no.1 in the world in that position.

Tampa Bay Lightning Form

If the Montreal Canadiens are a team made legendary by past achievements, then the Tampa Bay Lightning are very much a team of the present. Founded in 1992, everything Tampa Bay have achieved in ice hockey has come in this millennium.  They were Stanley Cup winners 2004 and 2020 and losing finalists in 2015. They also won three Conference Championships, a President’s Trophy and four Division Championships, all during the past two decades.

Tampa Bay eased through their Conference First Round series against the Florida Panthers 4-2, then blew away the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1. Tampa then had a titanic tussle with the New York Islanders, finally coming through 4-3. Rock-solid for Tampa during the playoffs has been their Russian goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, rated by many as – along with Montreal’s Carey Price - the best in the world.

Verdict

The Montreal Canadiens are looking for their first Stanley Cup win since 1993, which would be their 25th – 12 clear of their closest rivals. The Tampa Bay Lightning are hoping to become just the second team this millennium to retain the Stanley Cup. This final also features the two best goalies in the NHL – Montreal’s Carey Price and Andrei Vasilevskiy of Tampa Bay.

There hasn’t been a 4-0 rout in a Stanley Cup final since the Detroit Red Wings thrashed the Washington Capitals in 1998, and it won’t happen in this final. I’m backing Montreal to open their account with a close win over Tampa Bay, in a game that will feature around five goals.
I’m also backing Montreal’s Tyler Toffoli to be my Anytime Goalscorer.
