Montreal Canadiens @ Vancouver Canucks Tips

The Montreal Canadiens and the Vancouver Canucks will face-off in a must-see match on Thursday, March 11 at the Roger Arena in Montreal (pictured below). On Tuesday, the Canucks continued their recent amazing run of form with an overtime 2-1 shootout win over the Canadiens. This was something of an upset, as Montreal are 4th in the NHL North Division, while Vancouver were second from bottom.

Add to that the fact that the Canadiens had dominated their head-to-head vs the Canucks, and even this season had beaten them four times (against one defeat) and it looked like another easy win for Montreal. However, after going behind in the first period, Vancouver defended valiantly, keeping the scoreline at 1-0 until Adam Gaudette grabbed their equalizer in the third period.

After no goals were scored during the overtime period the game went to a penalty shootout. Both keepers – Carey Price for Montreal and Thatcher Demko for Vancouver - performed heroically, but after four failed attempts, Bo Horvat finally scored the winning penalty for the Canucks.

That win lifted them up to fifth in the division, just three points behind Montreal, although the Canadiens have five games in hand. It was also Vancouver’s third-straight win, their fourth in five games. I’m backing the Canucks to beat the Canadiens again on Thursday, this time more decisively.

Head to Head

The Montreal Canadiens and the Vancouver Canucks have played each other a total of 29 times, with Montreal leading their head-to-head by 20 wins to 9. Montreal have had the edge in recent matches between these two teams, and since the start of 2019, the Canadians have won six of their nine games.

This season Montreal and Vancouver have already played each other six times, with the Canadiens 4-2 up. However, in their most recent meeting on Tuesday (March 9), the Canucks defeated Montreal 2-1 following an overtime shootout.

Montreal Canadiens Form

The one thing Montreal have going for them at this stage of the season is that they have games in hand over all the other teams in the NHL North Division except for the Winnipeg Jets. Despite suffering 13 defeats, if they win their three games in hand over the second-placed Edmonton Oilers, they would climb to second in the table behind only the Toronto Maple Leafs.

While having games in hand can be extremely positive, if they aren’t converted to victories and points they are useless. Right now, Montreal are suffering their worst run of the season, and since February 21 have won just two games out of their last nine. On Tuesday they were beaten by the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 after a penalty shootout. They had previously defeated Vancouver four times this season against one loss.

It's not all doom and gloom however; because they won so many games earlier in the year, Montreal’s season is far from over, and if they could find a way to overcome this wretched run of form, the Canadiens could still make the postseason playoffs.

Vancouver Canucks Form

Vancouver looked dead and buried this season until they pulled off that shock 3-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs last Friday (March 5). Toronto have been the best team in the NHL all season and had lost only 6 times in 24 games prior to that match against Vancouver. Surely the Maple Leafs would put things right when they played each other again two days later?

Incredibly, the Canucks didn’t just repeat their win, they thumped Toronto 4-2 and proved their first win was no fluke. Nevertheless, going into their game against Montreal on Tuesday (March 9) they were once again the underdogs with the bookies.

However, Vancouver proved that they can tough it out, going behind early against the Canadiens before grabbing a late equalizer and then getting the winner in the overtime penalty shootout to earn a 2-1 victory. A playoff place would seem a bit of a stretch for Vancouver, but if they keep this run going, anything is possible.

While Tuesday’s first meeting between these two was a tough game to call, based off that result and the recent form of both teams, I’m backing the Vancouver Canucks to repeat their win over the Montreal Canadiens, only this time more decisively.

Vancouver have scored 83 goals this season, and I’m looking for them to add to that tally on Thursday with a more attacking display against what might be a somewhat shellshocked Montreal team. The Canucks will win this game by at least two goals, with their top goalscorer Brock Boeser getting on the score sheet.
