Montreal Canadiens @ Vancouver Canucks Tips

The Montreal Canadiens will take on the Vancouver Canucks in an NHL regular season game on Tuesday, March 9. Both of these teams are part of the all-Canadian North Division, purposely constructed to protect the Canadian NHL teams from having to travel excessively during the current pandemic.

On the ice Montreal suffered a loss of form in February that saw them drop down the table, sliding from second place to their current position of fourth. Vancouver are two places below them in sixth in a seven-team division. North Division table-toppers the Toronto Maple Leafs have been the best team in the NHL this season.

Both of these teams go into this game off the back of victories; on Sunday Montreal defeated Winnipeg 7-1, while Vancouver proved that Friday’s 3-1 victory over Toronto was no fluke by turning the trick again on Sunday, this time by a scoreline of 4-2.

I’m backing the Canucks to continue their stunning recent form of back-to-back victories over the league leaders Toronto with a win over the Canadians on Tuesday. While Montreal won impressively against second-placed Winnipeg, it was only their second win in their last eight games. Vancouver, despite their low league ranking are on something of a role right now, with three wins in their last four games.

  • Vancouver 6th in NHL North Division
  • Vancouver 11-17 this season

Head to Head

The Montreal Canadiens and the Vancouver Canucks have played each other a total of 28 times, with Montreal leading their head-to-head by 20 wins to 8. Montreal have also dominated recent fixtures between the two, and since the start of 2019, the Canadians have won six of their eight games. In their most recent meeting in February of this year, Montreal defeated Vancouver 5-3.

Montreal Canadiens Form

At the start of February, the Montreal Canadians had a 7-3 record and were second in the North Division to the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, they would then go 2-8 through the rest of February, dropping down the division like a stone. At one point, Montreal lost five games on the bounce.

However, since the start of March, Montreal seem to have turned things around, winning two of their three games. On Friday (March 5) the Canadians were beaten by the North Division’s second-placed Winnipeg Jets 4-3 in an overtime shootout. In the rematch two days later, Montreal pulled off their best result of the season, thrashing Winnipeg 7-1.

Vancouver Canucks Form

The Vancouver Canucks have struggled to put a good run together this season, despite beating all of the best teams in the North Division. At the start of February, Vancouver had a 6-5 record and were comfortably mid-table when they went into a six game losing streak, a slump they have never really recovered from league position-wise.

After tying their four-game series with Calgary 2-2 in mid-February, Vancouver suffered a second serious slump, this time losing four consecutive matches - twice each to Winnipeg and Edmonton. However since the start of March the Canucks have enjoyed their best run of form of the season, with three wins from four games; defeating Winnipeg 4-0 then pulling off those incredible back-to-back victories over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Prior to their defeats against Vancouver, Toronto had lost just one game in their last eight, had an 18-5 record, and were easily the best team in the NHL, facts that make those wins for the Canucks all the more impressive.

Verdict

This is a tough game to call; both Montreal and Vancouver have had their struggles but both teams started March strongly. Montreal are higher placed in the league, and last time out had that excellent victory over Winnipeg.

However, Vancouver’s back-to-back wins over highflying Toronto have been THE results of the season so far, and the Canucks will be full of confidence going into this fixture. I see them winning by at least two clear goals in a game featuring five goals or more.
