Edmonton Oilers @ Ottawa Senators Tips

The Edmonton Oilers and the Ottawa Senators meet in an NHL North Division regular season game on Wednesday, April 7. This will be the eighth time these two teams have faced each other this year, with Edmonton leading 7-0. The Oilers and the Senators will play each other for the tenth and final time in 2021 on Friday.

Edmonton are currently third in the all-Canadian NHL North Division, seven points adrift of league leaders the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Oilers began this season poorly, and were in the bottom-two of the division, but since February have rallied to become likely playoff contenders.

Both of this these teams go into this game coming off defeats: Edmonton were beaten in an overtime shootout by the Montreal Canadiens, while Ottawa lost to the Winnipeg Jets 4-3. I’m backing the Oilers to overcome the Senators in a highly competitive matchup featuring around eight goals.

  • Edmonton 3rd in NHL North Division
  • Edmonton 23-16 this season
  • Ottawa 7th in NHL North Division
  • Ottawa 13-26 this season

Head to Head

The Edmonton Oilers and the Ottawa Senators have played each other 29 times, with Ottawa leading their head-to-head by the narrowest of margins, 15-14. However this season has been one-sided in Edmonton’s favor, with the Oilers winning all seven of their matches vs Ottawa. Their most recent meeting in March of this year finished 6-2 in favor of the Oilers.

Edmonton Oilers Form

The Edmonton Oilers are currently third in the NHL North Division with 48 points from 39 games. Edmonton have won 23 games and lost 16, two via overtime shootouts. The Oilers have been regularly vying with the Winnipeg Jets for second place in the North Division, but have yet to top the table. They remain seven points adrift of leaders Toronto.

Edmonton’s rise from bottom of the division to one of the favorites to reach the playoffs this year remains a remarkable story. It’s certainly true that at the end of January their record was 3-6, but within a month Edmonton had become one of the top-3 in the North Division and destined for the Post Season. That said, they have lost two of their last three games, both against the Montreal Canadiens.

Ottawa Senators Form

The Ottawa Senators are currently bottom of the NHL North Division with a record of 13 wins against 26 defeats. Ottawa have played a total of 39 games and amassed just 30 points, and are five adrift of seventh placed Calgary Flames. Unlike Wednesday’s opponent’s Edmonton, Ottawa haven’t managed to turn things around at any point during the season.

Ironically, the Senators began 2021 with a victory over current division leaders the Toronto Maple Leafs. However that would be as good as it got, and they subsequently lost nine consecutive games, setting the stage for their season. On Sunday, Ottawa defeated the Montreal Canadiens 6-3, but on Tuesday they were beaten 4-3 by the North Division’s no.2 team the Winnipeg Jets.

Verdict

The Edmonton Oilers aren’t quite the team they were a few weeks ago when statistically they were one of the best in the NHL. However, they aren’t far off, and should be too strong overall for the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.

However, as they proved with their victory over fourth placed Montreal on Sunday, Ottawa aren’t a bad team, and pretty much anybody can beat anybody in the ultracompetitive North Division. Nevertheless, I’m backing the Oilers to beat the Senators on Wednesday in a highly competitive game that will feature around eight goals.

Edmonton’s no.1 hitman Connor McDavid is my Anytime Goalscorer pick to add to his tally of 22 goals this season.
