Colorado Avalanche @ San Jose Sharks Tips

The Colorado Avalanche will play the San Jose Sharks in an NHL West Division regular season game on Wednesday, March 3. Colorado are currently fourth in the West Division, four points adrift of leaders the Vegas Golden Knights. The San Jose Sharks are second from bottom but have only five points less than Colorado in what is an extremely competitive division.

Colorado and the Sharks played on Tuesday, with San Jose winning 6-2. San Jose had lost their previous two games back in January going into the match against Colorado, and also suffered a pair of postponements. However, their victory was extremely impressive, especially as San Jose came from two goals down before ripping the Avalanche apart with six goals of their own.

I’m picking San Jose to pick up where they left off on Tuesday and scoring another victory over Colorado, this one even more convincingly. I’m backing the Sharks to start strongly this time, take the lead and hang on to it. San Jose will win this game by three clear goals, in a game that will feature a total of six goals or less.

Head to Head

The Colorado Avalanche and the San Jose Sharks have played each other 61 times in the NHL regular season, with the San Jose Sharks leading this head-to-head 38-23. However, in the five matches these teams have played since the start of 2020, Colorado have been the dominant team, winning four matches consecutively before losing on Tuesday.

Colorado Avalanche Form

Colorado Avalanche are currently fourth in the NHL West Division, with 11 wins and eight defeats (one of those defeats was an overtime shootout which earned them a point.) Overall, the Avalanche are ranked 15th in the NHL league, so an end of season playoff spot is still very much up for grabs.

If Colorado are to guarantee themselves a playoff place, they will have to improve their consistency. Prior to the defeat against San Jose on Tuesday, they had won back-to-back games against Arizona, but had previously suffered heavy defeats against Minnesota and Vegas.

In their two games against the San Jose Sharks earlier this season Colorado emerged victorious both times by scores of 7-3 and 3-0.

San Jose Sharks Form

Despite Tuesday’s impressive victory over the Colorado Avalanche, the San Jose Sharks will need a comeback of Edmonton Oilers-esque levels to get within touching distance of a playoff place. San Jose are currently second from bottom of the NHL West Division, with eight wins and 11 defeats. The Sharks would be even lower had not the team below them - the Anaheim Ducks - been the worst team in the NHL right now.

A major problem for the Sharks in February was that their schedule was severely hampered by COVID-19 travel restrictions, and four of their matches were postponed. However, as three of those games were against division leaders the Vegas Golden Knights, those postponements could yet prove a blessing in disguise.

The Sharks need to draw inspiration from the way they played on Tuesday. When the Avalanche went 2-0 up in the second period, it looked like the Sharks were headed for their third defeat of the season against Colorado. However, they hit back immediately, with Kevin Lebanc scoring the equalizer at the end of the second period. The third period was a route, with four goals from San Jose rounding out a memorable 6-2 victory.

Verdict

The truth is the San Jose Sharks are a better team than their current position would suggest, and a victory like the one they achieved on Tuesday has been waiting to happen for some time. I believe that San Jose will now go on something of a winning run, starting with another victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday.

Colorado have been underperforming recently, and San Jose exposed their limitations on Tuesday, so I’m backing the Sharks to win Wednesday’s game by three clear goals, with a total of six goals or less in the match.
