Chicago Blackhawks @ Tampa Bay Lightning Tips

Two of this century’s most successful teams clash in an NHL regular season game when the Chicago Blackhawks face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday, March 19. This is the first of a two-game series; the second meeting takes place on Saturday. Tampa – the reigning Stanley Cup holders – are top of the Central Division, while 6-time Stanley Cup winners Chicago are fourth.

This will be the sixth meeting between Chicago and Tampa this season, with the Lightning leading 4-1. In their most recent meeting on March 7, Tampa Bay were 6-3 winners. However, in spite of all of their recent wins against Chicago, I’m picking against Tampa and backing the Blackhawks to pull off an upset. Why? The law of averages, and Chicago are a great team and due a win.

  • Tampa top NHL Central Division
  • Tampa 20-8 this season
  • Chicago 4th in NHL Central Division
  • Chicago 14-16 this season

Head to Head

The Chicago Blackhawks and the Tampa Bay Lightning have played each other 32 times, with Tampa leading their head-to-head by 21-11. In their last nine games dating back over the past two seasons, Tampa lead 7-2. In their most recent meeting earlier this month, Tampa Bay Lightning were 6-3 winners.

Chicago Blackhawks Form

Chicago have played 30 games this season with 14 victories and 16 defeats, five of which were overtime shootouts. Their tally of 33 points keeps them four clear of the fifth-placed Columbus Blue Jackets, but they are eight points shy of third-placed Carolina Hurricanes, who also have two games in hand.

Although they have been around since 1926, Chicago have won three of their six Stanley Cups during this century, in 2009-10, 2012-13 and 2014-15. The last time they lifted the Central Division winner’s trophy was 2017. Right now Chicago are going through a period of rebuilding, but they are still capable of reaching the playoffs this season.

Chicago are 16th in the National Hockey League table, with the 16 best teams going through to the playoffs. However, there are still 26 games left in their schedule, and the Blackhawks cannot afford to blow so many games; for example just this week they suffered back-to-back defeats to the Florida Panthers.

Tampa Bay Lightning Form

The current Stanley Cup holders the Tampa Bay Lightning top the NHL Central Division, with 20 wins against eight defeats for a total of 42 points. The second-placed Florida Panthers also have 42 points, but Tampa have the superior goal difference, +35 compared to +18.

Tampa have been impressive for most of the season, losing just two of their first 11 games, a sequence that included six straight wins. After a brief hiccup where they lost three out of four, Tampa ran off another six-straight wins from late February through to early March.

If anything, they have looked a little shaky in their last four games, losing to both the Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators, and while they were victorious last time out against the Dallas Stars 4-3, it was only via an aftertime shootout.

Verdict

All of the above information points toward another win for the Tampa Bay Lightning. With that said, why am I leaning toward the Chicago Blackhawks pulling off an upset? Could it be that the Blackhawks are overdue a win against Tampa? Might it be that the Lightning have looked a little flat recently, and on Monday were beaten 4-1 by the Nashville Predators, currently second from bottom of the Central Division?

Sometimes you just have to go with your gut, and I’m backing the Chicago Blackhawks to defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday by at least two clear goals, in a match that will feature a total of six goals or less. I’m also picking Chicago’s no.1 hitman Alex DeBrincat to add to his tally of 15 goals this season.
