Chicago Blackhawks @ Dallas Stars Tips

The Chicago Blackhawks will be out for revenge when they take on the Dallas Stars in an NHL regular season game on Friday, March 12. On Wednesday, Chicago were well beaten by Dallas 6-1, their worst defeat of the season. Both of these teams compete in the Central Division, the Blackhawks are currently fourth while the Stars are second from bottom.

This will be their 3rd meeting this year; Chicago scored back-to-back 2-1 overtime victories over Dallas in February. However, I’m looking to the Dallas Stars leveling the series at 2-2 on Saturday with another comprehensive victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

  • Chicago 4th in Central Division
  • Chicago Staley Cup winners in 2015
  • Dallas 7th in Central Division
  • Dallas Staley Cup runners-up in 2020

Head to Head

The Chicago Blackhawks and the Dallas Stars have played each other a total of 59 times, with Chicago leading their head-to-head by 34 wins to 25. In their most recent nine games since the start of 2019, the Blackhawks lead 5-4. The last time they met, on Wednesday, March 10 this season, Dallas defeated Chicago 6-1.

Chicago Blackhawks Form

The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the great teams in the NHL, and have won six Stanley Cups, three in the past decade, most recently in 2015. However, since last winning the Central Division in 2017, Chicago have been fairly mediocre, and even though they just made the playoffs last season, they were beaten in the first round 4-1 by the Vegas Golden Knights.

Chicago are almost halfway through this reduced 56-game regular-season, and they will need to pick up their form if they are to qualify for this season’s playoffs. The Blackhawks are currently 5-5 in their last 10 games, and have suffered back-to-back defeats, most recently on Wednesday when they were well beaten by the Dallas Stars 6-1.

Dallas Stars Form

The Dallas Stars won the Western Conference last season, eventually losing the Stanley Cup series to Tampa Bay 4-2 and failing to add to their loan Stanley Cup win in 1999. Despite last season’s great success, thus far Dallas have been mediocre in the extreme this year, and are currently seventh in the Central Division, just three points above the bottom team, the Detroit Red Wings.

Dallas have won 18 games and lost 13 this season, although four of those were overtime shootouts that earned them a point each game. In their favor is the fact that Dallas have played less games than all the other teams in the division, and if they were to win the six games in hand they have over the Chicago Blackhawks, they would climb above Chicago into fourth place.

There are small signs that Dallas may be finally getting a hold of their season; after suffering four straight defeats, they have now won 2 out of their last 3 games, demolishing the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-0, then bouncing back from a penalty shootout loss to Nashville to thrash Chicago 6-1 on Wednesday.

Verdict

Both of these teams are grave danger of underachieving massively this season, and considering the Chicago Blackhawks were Stanley Cup winners as recently as 2015, and the Dallas Stars reached the Stanley Cup final only last season, that would be a huge disappointment to their fans.

However, based off their last three games, Dallas finally look as if they hitting are some form, with two impressive victories, most recently Wednesday’s 6-1 win over Chicago.

I’m backing Dallas to repeat Wednesday’s performance with a similarly impressive display, defeating Chicago decisively in a game that will feature 4.5 goals or less (4-0, 3-1 or 3-0), with the Dallas Star’s Joe Pavelski adding to his tally of 13 goals.
