The NFL season gets underway with 16 games in Week 1 with the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans kicking things off on Friday.
There are 16 games to look forward to on the opening weekend of the season as the race to Super Bowl LV begins. We preview each of them and provide our predictions.
Houston Texans @ Kansas City Chiefs Tips
Super Bowl champions the Chiefs begin their defence at Arrowhead Stadium against the Texans, who they famously defeat in last year’s divisional round after coming back from 24-0 down. The Texans appear to have weakened their roster by trading wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins for running back David Johnson from the Arizona Cardinals, and they had their chance to beat Kansas City. Even without a crowd inside Arrowhead, the Chiefs look a good thing to make a winning start to the season. For value, over the total points is the best bet.
Las Vegas Raiders @ Carolina Panthers Tips
The Panthers ended last season with eight defeats in a row and start the season as home underdogs against the Raiders, who have moved from Oakland to Las Vegas. Beginning a new chapter in their history, the Raiders appeal as value to cover the handicap at Bank of America Stadium.
Indianapolis Colts @ Jacksonville Jaguars Tips
The Colts' failure to make the playoffs last season has forced a rethink with veteran Philip Rivers replacing Jacoby Brissett as quarterback. They look value to cover the line at TIAA Bank Field, as they did in four of their six games against fellow division opponents last year. The Jaguars were a disappointing 6-10 last year and surprise NFL fans when releasing Leonard Fournette last week.
Miami Dolphins @ New England Patriots Tips
It is a new era for the Patriots as MVP quarterback Cam Newton steps into the shoes left by Tom Brady. New England start the season as favourites to win the AFC East Division for the 12th year in a row, but can they gel first up and avoid a repeat of last year's defeat to the Dolphins. With some fitness clouds over Newton heading into Week 1, Miami to cover the handicap at Gillette Stadium is the value.
Philadelphia Eagles @ Washington Football Team Tips
Under a new name, the Washington Football Team start with a home game against the Eagles at FedEx Field. Philadelphia have won the last six matches against Washington, who ended last season with four straight losses and have lost their last 11 games against NFC East teams. This is all about the Eagles.
Seattle Seahawks @ Atlanta Falcons Tips
One of the games of Week 1, the Seahawks head to Mercedes Benz Stadium to take on the Falcons. Seattle won 27-20 in Week 8 last year, but this game is close to a coin flip according to the bookmaker odds. The Seahawks were agonisingly beaten in the divisional round of last year's playoffs, while the Falcons missed the playoffs but did finish with four straight wins. They enjoy six wins in their last 10 games as underdogs are can continue that trend.
Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings Tips
Rivals the Packers and Vikings meet in a NFC North contest at US Bank Stadium. Minnesota are small favourites at home, but history shows they lost both games to Green Bay last year. The Packers have to bounce back from their loss to the San Francisco 49ers in last year’s NFC Championship game, but the truth is they were one game away from the Super Bowl. As outsiders, they are well worth support.
New York Jets @ Buffalo Bills Tips
These two sides ended the season with a clash in Week 17 and the Jets recorded a 13-6 success. That wasn't a true reflection of the Bills' season, however, as they rested stars ahead of the playoffs. Buffalo went on to lose the Wild Card round to the Texan and the Jets finished bottom of the pile. Expect a completely different outcome from this game.
Cleveland Browns @ Baltimore Ravens Tips
The defending AFC North champions the Ravens are red-hot favourites to win their division once again. Baltimore fans will be expecting their side to go better than the divisional round last year, in which they lost to the Titans. The Ravens look the real deal and should make a comfortable winning start to the season against a Browns side which turns to Kevin Stefanski at the helm this season.
Chicago Bears @ Detrioit Lions Tips
The Lions have been the subject of support to win the NFC North this season and the clash with the Bears at Ford Field will provide us with some answers. The return of quarterback Matthew Stafford from injury is big for Detroit, and he can orchestrate things against a Chicago side that are slow starters. The Bears haven't won a Week 1 game since 2013 and the Lions can ensure that continues.
Los Angeles Chargers @ Cincinnati Bengals Tips
There's no big expectations on either franchise this year with new era at quarterback for both and predictions of missing the finals during the rebuild. The Chargers have Tyrod Taylor at QB following the exit of Philip Rivers, while rookie No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow will guide the Bengals. The Chargers have the class to comfortably defeat the Bengals, who were dismal with points score last year. Take the unders for total point in this one.
Arizona Cardinals @ San Francisco 49ers Tips
The Niners threw away the chance to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy last year as they lost Super Bowl LIV to the Chiefs. How will they bounce back in the opening week of the season? The host the Cardinals at Levi's Stadium with some expectations placed on Arizonaa this year to win NFC West. They look a threat and the handicap start makes them value with the possibility of a San Francisco hangover.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ New Orleans Saints Tips
Tom Brady begins life as a Buccaneer in one of the games of the weekend. If Tampa Bay are to be NFC South contenders, they'll have to advertise their chances in a difficult opener against the Saints. New Orleans lost their wildcard playoff against the Vikings in overtime and will have a point to prove. The last two games between these sides were high-scoring affairs and the over total points is the play.
Dallas Cowboys @ Los Angeles Rams Tips
Mike McCarthy has been tasked with the job of taking the Cowboys into the playoffs, but can he improve on Dallas' disappointing 8-8 season last year. The Rams were only marginally better at 9-7 as they suffered a Super Bowl hangover. There are question marks over how both will begin the new season, and the total points is the smart play. Back the overs after the Cowboys and Rams played out a 44-21 game last season.
Pittsburgh Steelers @ New York Giants Tips
Ben Roethlisberger is back for the Steelers and the quarterback can have a major impact from the outset in Week 1. An 8-8 season finished with three successive defeats, but Pittsburgh get their main man back. The Giants posted just four wins all season and struggled to impact the scoreboard heavily. That shouldn't be any different against the Steelers as New York's rebuild continues.
Tennessee Titans @ Denver Broncos Tips
The Titans enjoyed a dream, and perhaps surprise, run to the AFC Championship Game before losing the the Chiefs. They return to action with a trip to Denver to face the Broncos, who won a Week 6 clash between the sides last year. In the end, the Broncos were flattered to finish 7-9 courtesy of wins in their last two games. But more is expected this year and history favours them at Mile High. The Titans haven't won in Denver since 1999.
