English Premier League set to return on June 8

English Premier League fans have been given reason to celebrate after reports circulating in England suggest the 2019/20 season could resume on June 8.

According to The Times, England’s top flight could be back in just over a month in what has been dubbed ‘Project Restart’. The report suggests Premier League officials, as well as their counterparts from other sporting governing bodies, have engaged in talks with the British government about when they can resume, yielding positive results.

The mooted return would see the competition initially resume behind closed doors, with a maximum of 400 people permitted to attend, including media; and only if they have tested negative for coronavirus.

Extra changing facilities would be introduced to ensure players observe social distancing measures in the dressing room, while they would also be required to turn up for training individually and already in full kit.

Matches will reportedly only be held at ‘approved’ venues, in an effort reduce the possible spread of the virus while cutting down the number of police, medical support and testing personnel necessary. Clubs expressed their desire to host games in their own stadiums, but they reportedly could be convinced to play at training grounds and neutral venues such as the English national team’s St George’s Park base.

Should the competition be and up and running on this timeline, then the 2019-20 season would finish on July 27, while August 22 has reportedly been chosen as the start date for the 2020-21 campaign. There are still 92 matches remaining in the current season, which has been on hold since March 13.

According to The Times, the British government is keen for the season to get back underway because they hope it will lift the mood of a nation still in the grips of lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic.
