Eagle Farm - Race 2 No. 1 Humbolt Current
It gives me shivers tipping this gelding seeing he is one I have never been able to catch, but this is a very winnable Benchmark 90 given the drop in class from all five starts this prep.
His last three have been at Listed level, not finishing far from Wolfe and Spirit Ridge three back in the January Cup before again running okay behind Skymax and Wolfe in the Australia Day Cup.
Humbolt Current was a little flat in the Torney Night Cup at Moonee Valley, but he goes better clockwise and has good form at the track, so on quality alone, he is the one to beat here.
Morphettville - Race 4 No. 6 Night Passage
This four-year-old failed in her one and only attempt past ten furlongs, which is the knock although she did race quite keenly on that occasion in an effort that was a little bad to be true, as the performances either side of that flop have been very consistent.
Via her last two outings, both over 1800m, Night Passage has given the impression that she's searching for a trip and prior to the last start effort at Sandown when grinding home for fourth, the January 30 contest at Morphettville was a stronger one and through Tibetan who she had a length on, we can tie that through a lot of these key threats.
The form through the winner of that contest (Medieval Miss) has stood up quite well with that runner placing in the Listed Birthday Cup at her next outing behind Declares War, who then completed a winning hat-trick in last Sunday's Wangaratta Cup.
Randwick - Race 6 No. 6 Emanate
EMANATE. Certainly, short enough at an odds-on quote for what is her first attempt at stakes level but is following what wasn't a dissimilar path set by stable mate Tailleur, who was fit coming off a big Benchmark win to beat some classy one's resuming while down in the weights and the second-up win at Rosehill was enormous.
At 33.27, she's recorded almost the fastest last 600m for that entire February 20 meeting. Following a perfect midfield trail under Rachel King, Emanate was able to extend strongly over the last 150m and pull away for the softest of victories on the line. Good draw again and with that turn-of-foot, she goes on top again but is facing some genuine Group class mares here
Flemington - Race 7 No. 7 Lunakorn
LUNAKORN is a Flemington horse to me after her win at the end of last prep where she showed a huge turn-of-foot to put some in-form horses to the sword. First-up she was very good at Caulfield in a strong Mannerism Stakes, now coming into this event which does look a touch weaker on paper. Jamie Kah is choosing to ride this horse after riding Quantum Mechanic last start, so I am expecting she is the horse to beat. Best bet of the day
Randwick - Race 9 No. 12 Nimalee
NIMALEE. Barring a couple of her key threats, it's a Group Three field littered with many non-winners and while it was hard to miss fresh run of She's Ideel who was enormous on February 20 (likely to be the better of these two mares over a little further), the safest option is this daughter of So You Think who gave them a bath first-up on that same program.
After winning four of six starts in her first racing preparation, Nimalee resumed last year with a pair placing's before being thrown in the deep via the Angst Stakes where she placed and then didn't stay the 2000m of the Rosehill Cup. The 1600m looks about perfect where she makes her own luck on speed and with little tempo in this field, she'll take catching.
