Warwick Farm Preview, Best Bets & Race Tips

Warwick Farm gets the pleasure of hosting mid-week racing in Sydney this Wednesday as the Spring Carnival quickly approaches.

There is a chance of rain between Monday and race-day but no enough to make a huge change in the track rating, which will be a Good 4 or Soft 5 at worst.

The rail is in the 5m position from the 1000m mark to the winning post and 3m the remainder. In the past, leaders have had a slight advantage early with runners trekking wider as the day progresses, though quite a few stuck on the rail and ran very well.

Warwick Farm Favourites

Race 3 No.7 Erno - $1.90 at Bet365

Erno is one of Kim Waugh’s runners that will keep increasing his ratings this preparation.

The son of Rubick was impressive last campaign putting in three fantastic runs in which he won his first two then ran second before having a spell.

First-up last preparation, he made easy work of his opponents in a maiden at Wyong on the heavy going before heading to Warwick Farm to hand his rivals a lesson, winning by 1.3 lengths.

He started short-priced favourite in the Clarendon Stakes at Hawkesbury where he was run down late by Creator. He wasn’t disgraced in this run as he carried 3kg more than his nearest rival.

He gets a brilliant draw here with James McDonald taking the steer which should get him into the lead quite early in the run. He is back to a much suitable weight and will be very hard to run down in the straight.

Watch for his name throughout the spring as he goes through the grades.

Warwick Farm Roughies

Race 7 No.8 Duchess of Lennox - $11.00 at Beteasy

Not exactly sure why she is the price she is, she is a classy runner.

In her last preparation she only had six starts where she was ultra-impressive in all except for two.

Completely put a line through her Queensland Oaks run where she was four wide the trip towards the tail of the field. Before that, she raced well behind horses like Nobu and Fighting Teo.

She has drawn barrier six which isn’t going to be an issue with her drop back style and she should be smashing the line late. The distance won’t be an issue but she will need longer further in her preparation.

Duchess of Lennox should carry over some residual fitness from the late autumn/early winter campaign which will help her fight to the finish. With James McDonald aboard her, she is an excellent each-way play to end the day.

Warwick Farm Best Bet

Race 6 No.5 King Hewitt

Kim Waugh brings three runners to Warwick Farm on Wednesday and there is a high chance she will be walking away with at least two winners.

From the terrible draw last start, Tommy Berry dropped him back to near last early on in the race before taking the shortcut on the rail to hit the line hard in second behind Lifetime Quest. Many believe that had he drawn a gate he would have saluted; due to the fact he only went down by less than a length.

Last preparation he went down less than a length to promising gallopers Something Fast and Wolfe and beat home Kaapfever and Level Eight over 1400m, which boasts well for him here.

He gets a favourable draw here and the step up to the mile is a bonus especially on a big dry track. He goes slightly up in weight after coming down in grade but that shouldn’t be a concern.

Tommy Berry will get the ride once again and he will have to keep an eye on his closest rival Knowitall Jack who gets Chris Williams back on with the 3kg claim.

If Berry can keep King Hewitt within striking range of the leaders, he is going to be hard to hold out with his turn-of-foot.

The price quoted is overs, as he is a definite top two chance.

Race 5 No.12 Lanigera

Godolphin’s three-year-old’s have been coming out of the break with an extra kick in their step and he will continue his progression through the ranks.

First run this preparation, he wasn’t suited to the heavy going at all though despite this still finished 1.5 lengths behind Catwalk, and we know what Chris Waller thinks of her.

Second-up, he won a 900m race at Newcastle in style, leading from start to finish by 3.3 lengths. Since that run, he has had a small let-up with a trial where he wasn’t asked to do a lot whilst finishing alongside new stable-mate and future spring superstar Cascadian.

Although the draw looks tricky, he should be able to follow Wanna Get A What and The Pharoah across and get on their backs with some nice cover. Kerrin McEvoy will have him poised to strike in the straight.
