Royal Ascot Day 4 Tips - Friday, June 17

Race 1 - Albany Stakes Tips

Despite an excellent pedigree on paper, few fancied MAWJ to make a winning debut at Newmarket last month. Saeed bin Suroor's filly is by a top sprinting sire in Exceed And Excell. She's also a half-sibling to Charlie Appleby's duo Modern News and Modern Games, rated 111 and 115 respectively.

Mawj drifted out to 12/1 before the off and was caught on the rail behind the leaders with two furlongs to travel. As Ray Dawson got to work, Mawj picked up the bit brilliantly, sprinting clear to claim a convincing five-length success.

Bin Suroor has his string in good form and Mawj relished fast ground at Newmarket. She'll be our first selection on day four.

Race 3 - Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes Tips

Six of the last ten renewals of this handicap have gone the way of the favourite. That stat will give hope to fans of The Queen's runner, Just Fine and John Gosden's Trawlerman, who're currently locked in a battle for favouritism.

We'd rather side with the thoroughly in-form CONTACT, who's progression this season shows no signs of slowing down.

David Barron's grey enjoyed a consistent three-year-old campaign, where he was tried over 14 furlongs a couple of times. Following a fine second in a red-hot handicap at Thirsk on his reappearance, Contact comfortably saw off Tritonic and Rhythmic Intent to claim a two-length victory at Newmarket.

Contact then followed up off a career-high mark of 90 at Haydock. Ben Curtis went to the front with two furlongs to travel and needed only hands-and-heels to help his mount hold the field at arm's length. The handicapper has taken another swipe, upping Contact's mark to 96, but he can win again.

Race 5 - Sandringham Stakes Tips

Most of the likely pacesetters in this wide-open handicap have been drawn down the middle, which could inconvenience those drawn on the two wings. Placed perfectly to attack the front-runners from stall 11 is William Haggas' PERSIST, who ran well in defeat three times as a two-year-old last season.

Persist looked noticeably bigger and stronger as she made her return to action at Ripon last month. Haggas' filly got off to a slow start, but worked her way into contention nicely and eventually won going away from the field.

Cieren Fallon will ride this beautifully bred daughter of Frankel on Friday and Persist could progress far beyond her current mark of just 83 during 2022.

We'll also going to take a punt on one of the least-fancied runners in the field, NO NAY NICKI, who showed an excellent turn-of-foot to win a maiden over six furlongs on fast ground last season.

Richard Fahey's filly finished well from off the pace to place fourth behind the classy Maljoom on her reappearance at York. Paul Hanagan had to drag No Nay Nicki inside from a wide draw in the Listed Michael Seely Stakes last time out, a manoeuvre which seemed to light his mount up.

Turning for home, Fahey's filly was far too far back to get involved, but No Nay Nicki caught the eye as she stayed on powerfully to finish seventh.

If Barry McHugh, who takes the ride today, can get this filly settled and find a nice position behind the leader, then No Nay Nicki could use her potent finishing kick to mount a serious challenge.

Changingoftheguard faded from the front to eventually finish fifth in the Epsom Derby. Aidan O'Brien's front-runner is greatly respected, but we'd rather take the favourite on with the least-exposed runner in the field, OTTOMAN FLEET.

Charlie Appleby's gelding was beaten a neck by stablemate Natural World on debut at Newbury in April. Ottoman Fleet then recovered brilliantly after stumbling at the start to win the Listed Fairway Stakes, reeling in the well-backed favourite, Zain Sarinda to claim a narrow victory.

Ottoman Fleet is by a former Derby winner in Sea The Stars and out of a mare who's sire also won that famous Classic, Motivator. Stepping up to 12 furlongs will only bring about further improvement.

Race 7 - Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes Tips

Johnny Murtagh celebrated his first Royal winner on this day last year, and LADIES CHURCH stands an excellent chance of handing her trainer a second Ascot triumph.

Ladies Church ended her juvenile season rated 102, thanks to a Listed win at Naas and a third-place finish in Group Three company. On her reappearance at Dundalk, Ben Coen's mount ran a cracker from a wide draw to finish second to Geocentric, who has won another Listed race since. Last time out, Ladies Church was only beaten a neck by the classy Sacred Bridge in the Polonia Stakes at Cork.

Despite running extremely well on her last three starts, the handicapper has dropped Ladies Church from 102 down to a mark of 98. Coen's mount has been drawn kindly down the centre of the track and Ladies' Church won on her only previous start on fast ground. We don't see any negatives.

Despite good confidence in the favourite, we'll also going to have a speculative punt on JOSIES KID, who's form ties in closely with many of the sprinters who sit ahead of her in the market.

Alice Haynes' gelding beat second-favourite Korker at York last season, before going on to run the likes of Navello, Shamlaan and future Listed winner, Raasel close in subsequent outings.

Josies Kid has been far too keen and bombed out of contention twice this season. Haynes has added cheek-pieces for the first time to try and settle her sprinter down, and Kieran O'Neill's mount looks well-treated running off a mark of just 86.
