One of the biggest races during York's popular Ebor Festival is the Nunthorpe Stakes with Battaash bidding to defend his crown.

This thrilling five-furlong sprint has been won by many of the fastest horses the sport has ever seen, with names like Abernant, Sharpo and Dayjur sparkling on the honours boards at the Knavesmire.

2020 Nunthorpe Stakes Favourite

Battaash put his troubled history at York well behind him 12 months ago, blasting to victory in a new course-record time, stopping the clock quicker than the great Dayjur managed in 1990. Charlie Hills’ star returns to York on the back of a maiden Royal Ascot win, and even more record-breaking antics at Goodwood, where he destroyed the five-furlong record by over half a second.

2020 Nunthorpe Stakes Form Guide

Second in the market we find Art Power, who's progressed with each of his starts in 2020. Having begun the season running in a novice stakes at Newcastle, stunning victories in at Royal Ascot and in the Lacken Stakes have helped propel Tim Easterby's three-year-old onto a stunning rating of 115.

Whether Art Power is strong enough, or has the experience to contend with Battaash at the peak of his powers, I’m not so sure. Plus, he’s only ever run on slow ground, and it’s going to be rattlingly fast next week. Art Power, however, remains a very exciting prospect for Tim Easterby and the King Power team to move forward with though.

Both Oxted and Hello Youmzain sit prominently in the betting, but I'd be very surprised if either came to York, with the Sprint Cup at Haydock at the top of their agendas.

Wesley Ward has threatened to throw juvenile Golden Pal into the fray, and he's a speedy young colt who'll gain stacks of weight on the horses ahead of him in the market.

Frenetic has shown plenty of speed during her short career so far, and Ger Lyon's two-year-old filly would be claiming even more weight from the older horses than Golden Pal.

The Lir Jet and Steel Bull also hold entries and could represent the juveniles. The chances of both appearing after running in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes, though, are slim.

Glass Slippers managed to get within three lengths of Battaash at Goodwood, when gaining almost a stone on the favourite. The gap between the two at the weights will be just three pounds this time around, and I'm not sure Kevin Ryan's charge offers a tremendous amount of value at 12/1.

Equilateral continues to disappoint, and I'm not sure Lazuli is up to this standard. Moss Gill remains on the upgrade, but he'll need a career-best effort just to be in with a shout of placing.

Dakota Gold and El Astronaute are both very capable, but have looked well below their best in recent starts. Liberty Beach would be an each-way contender, but she didn’t seem to handle quick ground well at Goodwood and I can’t see the ground coming up any worse than good-to-firm at York next week either.

Nunthorpe Stakes Tips

Battaash has looked better than ever this season. Charlie Hills star has obviously benefitted from the lack of a crowd, looking much more composed than he has in previous years, and proving his turn of foot is still as electrifying as ever.

I can’t see any reason why Battaash won’t win, but there have been upsets in the race, and plenty of them down the years, so an each-way punt against the market leader looks a profitable ploy.

Two-year-olds hold such an advantage at the weights, the likes of Frenetic and Golden Pal automatically look good value for an each-way punt. Although there has been on juvenile winner of the Nunthorpe this century, two-year-olds have underperformed in the race in general.

Only that solitary winner, Kingsgate Native running better than his starting price would suggest. Of the other 11 runners, only two have finished better than seventh, and they went off at 9/2 and 13/8 respectively. With that in mind, I’m going to swerve both of the two-year-olds and go for a more battle-hardened sprinter.

The only entrant who offer any sort of each-way appeal, to me, is A’ALI. Simon Crisford’s sprinter is starting to fulfil the immense promise he showed as a juvenile, collecting two pattern-races on his last two starts. This is another step up in Grade, but A’Ali beat Liberty Beach and Make A Challenge – who’s rated 112 – fairly comfortably on his last two starts, and I fancy he could follow Battaash home in second place.

I wouldn't put anyone off backing Battaash, if you like backing an odds-on favourite. But the value bet here is A'ALI at a solid each-way price.
