Glorious Goodwood Day One Tips
Race 1 - Chesterfield Cup Handicap Tips
9. LUCANDER is each-way odds in Tuesday's opener, a four-year-old that won a big handicap on Ebor day at York last season, beating Sky Defender and Cockalorum comfortably, before staying on to finish second behind Majestic Dawn in the Cesarewich.
Following a good run on his reappearance, Lucander has been disappointing on his last two starts in the Royal Hunt Cup and the John Smiths Cup.
Those performances have helped his rating drop down to 97 and he's got plenty of winning form on softer ground.
Race 2 - Vintage Stakes Tips
With question marks next to Berkshire Shadow's name regarding both trip and ground, I'm going to place my faith in 2. LUSAIL, who held on gamely to win the July Stakes at Newmarket last time out.
The Richard Hannon-trained colt had previously won a very good maiden over seven furlongs, beating several promising rivals under the burden of a penalty.
He should relish this step back up in trip and boasts valuable experience running on juicy turf.
Race 3 - Lennox Stakes Tips
10. SPACE BLUES has won six of his eight starts over seven furlongs, finishing second on the other two occasions. The son of Dubawi was unbeaten over this distance in 2020, a run which included an impressive two-length triumph in this race 12 months ago.
You simply have to back Space Blues, as he's currently the best exponent of seven furlongs in the sport. Soft ground and a fairly wide draw won't stop him running up to his true level.
We'll also have an each-way bet on 3. HAPPY POWER, who defeated Toro Strike in the Supreme Stakes over course-and-distance last season, before thrashing Pogo in the Godolphin Stakes.
The five-year-old does his best work on soft ground, and ran a belter two starts ago when fourth in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. Things didn't go to place last time out, but he can bounce back with a strong showing here.
Race 4 - Goodwood Cup Stakes Tips
3. EMPEROR OF THE SUN is huge odds for trainer Donnacha O'Brien, who saddled up his first Group One winner at this meeting 12 months ago.
Fancied by some shrewd experts to run well at Royal Ascot, he blew his chances away at the start and still sat at the rear of the pack as Subjectivist turned for home, but to his credit, the son of Galileo kept fighting late.
As a three-year-old, Emperor Of The Sun finished a close second to Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Princess Zoe at the Galway Festival, and placed second behind last year's St Leger winner, Galileo Chrome in the Yeats Stakes.
Donnacha's stayer kicked off this season with a fine third in the Vintage Crop Stakes, before blitzing two-time Irish St Leger winner, Search For A Song in the Saval Beg at Leopardstown and at the price, we'll go with him each-way in the Goodwood Cup.
Race 5 - Back To Goodwood Handicap Tips
This race hasn't been kind to favourites during its short history, so we'll side with an outsider in 12. RECON MISSION.
The five-year-old won well at Epsom on his return to turf racing in April, before suffering three-length defeats in the Epsom Dash and Chester via his most recent attempt.
Ray Dawson's claims means Recon Mission has just 51kg to shoulder on Tuesday, and first-time cheek-pieces could inspire a return to top form.
Lusail (Race 2) and Lusail (Race 3) are our best bets on Tuesday's Goodwood meeting.
Lucander has an each-way chance in the opener as does Emperor Of The Sun in the Group One Goodwood Cup.
