Ascot Roughie Tip
Ascot Roughie - Race 4 No. 1 Defending
The market is trending towards the more lightly raced and progressive gallopers in this field, and as a result, a decent each-way price is available for Defending.
This honest six-year-old rarely runs a bad race and he's been produced on the fresh side all campaign, with the son of Oratorio now a month between runs third-up.
He gave 2.5kg to a handy Toropa via a brave return (Defending has no winning first-up form) before covering ground over this track/trip when beaten just over three lengths.
Three subsequent winners have been produced from that October 12 event and along finding what is technically an easier race, he also maps for more favours this time.
Doomben Roughie Tip
Doomben Roughie - Race 8 No. 7 Belvedere Boys
This five-year-old is still lightly raced, with Belvedere Boys set for just his eleventh career start on Saturday and he is stepping up past 1400m for the first time here.
On breeding, the son of Maurice is suited up in trip and via a last start effort when one-paced at the Sunshine Coast, he gave the impression that this extra trip would suit.
That eighth-of-twelve was the first time he's ever finished outside of the top four and the gelding has only been out of the money twice (four wins and four placings).
Sting out of the track will suit Belvedere Boys, as will a switch to Doomben (2/2 here), while the Sydney form last prep through Sharp Shock and Rapbidash is holding up.
Flemington Roughie Tip
Flemington Roughie - Race 5 No. 1 Coco Sun
There's a chance that she may not have come up this prep, however, her form prior to the Caulfield Cup is light years above the references that any rival in this field brings.
The SA Derby winner drops in grade here and while a big gear change could be a shot at the stumps, she hasn't been quite as sharp of late and blinkers go on as a result.
The favs in this race are Hinged (hasn't won since Feb 2022) and Firestorm (poor last start in similar race), while $20+ is the price for a mare who is back vs own sex.
Before the Caulfield Cup failure, Coco Sun was campaigning against some of the best horses in Australia (twice at Group 1 WFA level) and the bigger Flemington track should suit.
Morphettville Roughie Tip
Morphettville Roughie - Race 5 No. 12 Shisuta Bo
She looks a savvy pick-up for the Travis Doudle yard, with this four-year-old arriving to South Australia with a low rating and should allow her to pick off a few races here.
Shisuta Bo wasn't able to progress in New South Wales, but there's been some encouraging efforts this season and the pick of those was a provincial BM64 run in August.
The four-year-old was the best of the on-speed runners in that 1400m Newcastle showing and blinkers were then applied via her last two outings for the Richard Litt yard.
Blinkers come off for her Adelaide debut, while Shisuta Bo was moving very well in a Morphettville trial win on October 22 and she could've won that heat by a lot further.
Rosehill Roughie Tip
Rosehill Roughie - Race 9 No. 9 Midnight Opal
Although he completed two trials ahead of his October 16 return, which included a heat win at Newcastle, those hit-outs suggested that he would need to fresh run.
Nothing went right for Midnight Opal in that Warwick Farm return, where after being ridden cold, all he found was trouble when angling for a gap in the run home.
He's each-way odds vs Fire Star, who comfortably won that October 16 event, but there's more upside with this youngster, who was gelded ahead of this prep
Anything resembling his second-up Darby Munro effort in March would probably win this, while he was a tad unlucky not top open his career with a hat-trick via his first Listed tilt.
