Belmont Roughie Tip

Belmont Roughie - Race 5 No. 2 Emerald Trader

He appears to be most comfortable when left alone early and then allowed to build momentum in galloping room, so being drawn out a little isn't necessarily a negative.

The lightly raced six-year-old proved that third-up last campaign when going back before an early move and despite racing three-wide throughout, Emerald Trader won easily.

He was scratched from an easier assignment last week and following a good chasing effort fresh, the gelding lost no fans when sitting three-wide on the speed second-up.

Emerald Trader was the pick of the on-speed runners despite covering ground and that effort should top him off nicely for this third-up assignment.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 8 No. 9 The Inevitable

Early in a campaign is the best time to catch this Tasmanian visitor, with half of his 16 career wins coming either first or second-up and his recent campaigns also support that.

Spelled after a third in the 2023 All-Star Mile, The Inevitable produced a cracker when resuming in Sydney last spring and with a better ride, I think he would've won the Epsom second-up.

His lead-up this prep is similar, with the veteran rattling home over 1350m first-up in the BRC Sprint and in the process, he recorded the fastest last 200m of the entire May 25 card.

Although he's versatile in regards to distance, 1400m is his pet trip (six wins and a second from 10 tries) and suited back on firm ground, this is his chance at land a Group 1.

Murray Bridge Roughie Tip

Murray Bridge Roughie - Race 5 No. 1 Bamyan Buddha

This local does have decent fresh stats, which includes a first-up Morphettville win in this grade a few preps back and he caught the eye on return last campaign when midfield.

That spring/early summer prep was a consistent one from Bamyan Buddha, with the five-year-old recording back-to-back victories in December before a flop.

There were excuses for the January 6 failure, as the son of Rich Enuff suffered a bleed in that attempt and his form outside of that Gawler outing was quite good.

He'll get over a little further, however, Bamyan Buddha is as effective over 1200m as any other trip, while he hasn't finished out of the top two in four runs at Murray Bridge.

Rosehill Roughie Tip

Rosehill Roughie - Race 9 No. 4 Vegas Outlaw

Although it's an open race, an outsider who makes some each-way appeal is Vegas Outlaw, with $40+ available for the seven-year-old in the early markets.

A galloper with no first-up form, he was sent out a huge odds fresh on May 25 and especially given his prior return efforts, he was brave there when covering ground over 1400m.

His second-up stats are better, with a win and two third recorded from three tries, while after winning four on the trot last prep, he pulled up lame in this grade.

Vegas Outlaw was tipped out after that January 6 outing, where he was a single-figure quote and with any improvement, the gelding has each-way claims off a softer map.

Sandown Roughie Tip

Sandown Roughie - Race 5 No. 13 Roadie

The June 5 metro meeting at Sandown Hillside gets very difficult from around Race 5 onwards and arguably the most open of them is this mares BM74.

This is a big step up for Roadie, hence her big price, however, the lightly raced four-year-old hasn't done much wrong and she's one of the few in this line-up who might have upside.

She overcome trouble to win at Ballarat last start, where she appreciated the rise in trip and given she's hard-fit/in-form, this metro race is worth a shot at the stumps.

Most of the early speed influences are drawn to her outside and with a middle barrier allowing her to get a tow in with galloping room, she can measure up here.
