Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 7 No. 10 Main Act

Although he couldn't breakthrough, Main Act showed enough in five appearances over his first prep and he's come back a better horse.

Blinkers went on for his March return, where the three-year-old won a fair form race (runner-up narrowly beaten in a Saturday event next start).

There was merit to the last effort on March 26, as he was the only one making an impression from off the speed in a leader-dominated race.

After carrying 58.5kg, Main Act now gets down to the 54kg minimum and back to 1200m is no knock (fresh victory was over this track/trip).

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 8 No. 14 Night Endeavor

He's one of the outsiders, but there's a genuine case for him going off his third Australian start when 0.75-lengths off the very talented Deakin.

Deakin won his next two outings and he's on the second line of betting for the 2025 Melbourne Cup after booking a ticket last week.

Night Endeavor was plain at Sandown last start, but the Ciaron Maher-trained galloper did pull-up lame and he was freshened-up as a result.

The six-year-old worked well in a March 17 jump-out and with an Australian prep under the belt, there's room to progress this campaign.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 9 No. 15 Durova

She was supported at long odds on debut via a Group 3 up the Flemington straight, where the Ciaron Maher-trained filly was disappointing.

Durova was spelled after that March 30 attempt and she returned with a first-up triumph last spring when contesting a hot Bendigo maiden.

Seven winners were produced from that September 8 race and that includes Tonkin, a Godolphin sprinter who won her next three starts.

Durova pulled up lame second-up at Sandown and on return over this track/trip, she ran the fastest closing sectionals of her March 15 event.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 6 No. 12 Serinite Illusion

With aggressive placements in three runs over his first prep last winter (two in Stakes grade), there was clearly an opinion of Serinite Illusion.

Following a first-up flop on February 15, connections opted to geld the three-year-old and blinkers were also applied for his March 12 tilt.

The ultimate gear change and head gear did the trick, with Serinite Illusion saluting via a race that's produced three subsequent winners.

He had no luck following that, as he was back/held-up before working home nicely (race-fastest last 200m) and the rise in trip here suits.

Randwick Roughie Tip

Randwick Roughie - Race 10 No. 10 Island Dec

We didn't see the real Island Dec in the Surround Stakes and there may have been an issue, as a tongue-tie is now applied (choked down?).

Also, nothing from the back really made an impression in that Group 1 and with all three wins coming on the fresh side, this set-up is favourable.

The let-up and drop in trip here are both positives, while Tommy Berry is back aboard Island Dec here (he was on for her first two wins).

Berry was also in the saddle for an impressive trial win at Kembla Grange on March 24 and he can produce her late off a soft run in transit.
