Torrens broke through for a well deserved victory at Eagle Farm on Saturday after what Ballina trainer Ethan Ensby described as a “nightmare” preparation.
Settling beautifully behind a strong tempo over 2200m, the son of Adelaide proved the superior stayer in the race to record his first win since January 25 at the Sunshine Coast.
“He has been a work in progress in the last 12 months,” Ensby said.
“We were aiming towards the Derby until Covid hit. He had a few different niggly problems and I made a few mistakes with him I’ll admit.
“This prep has just been an absolute nightmare apart from Luke’s (Dittman) two rides aboard him, and (Brad) Pengelly’s couple of rides.
“He should have won heaps more this prep alone.”
After winning the first four races in his career, Torrens was banging the door down for a win this preparation, including a second behind subsequent Listed placegetter Purrfect Deal.
“He is a lovely, lovely animal to deal with as a stallion. He has been a gem the whole time we have had him," Ensby said.
"He is a beautiful animal so hopefully we can put a couple more on the board now.”
