Scone Tips April 20

Scone Best Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Battenburg

Resuming off a long spell via the April 8 meeting from Goulburn, the late betting drift ($2.10-$2.80) indicated that he might need the run fresh and despite racing three-wide throughout, class ultimately prevailed with this four-year-old.

As a galloper that was city placed prior to a third in the Group One Spring Champion Stakes behind Shadow Hero and Castelvecchio (2019), Battenburg clearly has his fair share of ability and has returned as a gelding following a long spell.

Over a more suitable 1600m and now at what is only a Set Weights Class 1 & Maiden field, this isn't any harder to the fresh assignment and working through the lower grades, he finds another very winnable race on Tuesday.

Scone Value Bet - Race 6 No. 1 Chapelis

There was money at a long price for this mare first-up ($31-$21) and she duly saluted in that March 11 contest from Goulburn, coming from the rear and defeating Island Bay Boy over 1300m.

With an eye-catching win before a dead heat for first in Sunday's Wagga Guineas Prelude (with 60kg), the runner-up has franked that form nicely whereas Chapelis wasn't suited dropping to 1200m second-up at Newcastle behind a useful Hit The Target who led throughout.

Although up 6kg off that performance, the daughter of High Chaparral is well back in class here from a Provincial 68 to a Country 58 where barring the returning False Step, it does look a rather thin line-up.

Chapelis was a strong fresh winner and is better placed down in grade/up in trip third-up in Race 6.
