Sandown Tips February 25

Race 1 - 12:35PM Ladbrokes Victoria Gold Cup Tips (2100m)

Selections: 4,5,6,3.

Not the most appealing race to start the day. Suspect the most intent of the four first-up runners is through 4. MIDNIGHT BLUE, with the Bob Peters stayer arriving off five jump-out's and he's won the last three of them. Last year's Perth Cup winner generally runs well fresh and this is the longest distance that he returned over.

5. Saracen Knight was in career best form at end of last prep, recording back-to-back stakes wins at 2400m and is another that can perform fresh. The Jan 31 trial was solid and this is a winnable race for him.

Fitness and form is with the fav 6. Right You Are, but he's priced as if this is 1800m, not 2100m. Not a betting proposition here at $1.70-$1.80.

3. High Emocean is honest and she'll get a soft run from an inside alley. Was very consistent last prep.

Race 2 - 1:10PM Ladbrokes Angus Armanasco Stakes Tips (1400m)

Selections: 2,1,8,7.

WA filly 2. LACED UP HEELS briefly loomed as a threat in the Kevin Hayes, before just peaking late and will only strip fitter here second-up (has no first-up form). Given her racing pattern, the barrier is no knock and when going 1000m to 1400m in spring, she beat a star in Amelia's Jewel. Can pounce, providing they can run on.

It was a barrier trial for 1. She's Licketysplit in that Kevin Hayes and she found the line okay when balancing up. The dreaded bar plates come off and from gate three, they should be more positive over 1400m.

8. Call Di is a big, strong and superbly bred filly who won a maiden fresh in Sydney. Arguably should've won a listed race in spring at start two.

7. Jennilala covered ground via a brutal Twilight Glow in spring and should otherwise be unbeaten. Big price ($19.00 @ bet365).

Race 3 - 1:45PM Catanach's Jewellers Mannerism Stakes Tips (1400m)

Selections: 1,3,4,5.

Small field and a competitive race. 1. BARB RAIDER is perhaps the safest here, a mare that was terrific on a QLD Oaks path, although I do feel she's more effective in the 1400m-1800m range. Won the Vanity first-up over this trip 12 month ago, before taking out the Kewney and her lead-up work ahead of this has been encouraging.

While 3. Espiona didn't live up to the hype, this is her first Melb visit since the 2021 Oaks Day romp, with the only subsequent win coming over Party For One, who is a bridesmaid. Can win, but can't trust her.

4. Turaath was ordinary in the CF Orr and at WFA Group 1 level, she's outclassed anyway. Third-up and back to mares grade, she's worth thought.

5. Torogene has as much upside as any of these, but did only work through the lower grades over spring.

Race 4 - 2:20PM Ladbrokes Zeditave Stakes Tips (1200m)

Selections: 4,1,2,6.

Gelded after throwing away a stakes race to a smart Buenos Noches, 4. SPACEWALK is a work in progress, but the Godolphin three-year-old is on the up. After an unlucky return, they let him stride second-up and that was the difference, while Jamie Kah's balance and hands is a perfect addition here. Expect him to go on with it now.

Back to three-year-old grade after a solid return in a strong BM94, 1. Sebonack is the value ($17.00 @ GetSetBet), with this colt needing 1200m now. Showed potential early and then struck wet tracks, which he didn't handle.

2. Queen Of The Ball was heavily backed in the Kevin Hayes and she just missed via that return. She should be able to cross, despite a wide gate.

6. Recommendation is the fit leader, a gelding that ran into a handy one fresh, before bolting in second-up.

Race 5 - 3:00PM Stow Storage Autumn Classic Tips (1800m)

Selections: 2,11,8,1.

While 2. PERICLES was perhaps a run short first-up in the Autumn Stakes, if he had kinder run, this Godolphin gelding may well have got away with that race anyway. Stuck on despite a wide journey off a muddling tempo and with a middle draw in this bigger field, he should be able to slot in, given the lack of speed to his inside.

Although the form around 11. Yasuke isn't flash, he's done all he can, with an arrogant debut win here after sitting wide and he was then unlucky at The Valley. Rolls forward and can give a sight at long odds ($20.00 @ BoomBet).

8. Ausbred Rising Sun is progressive and respect the Brad Widdup stable on the road. Impressive second-up winner, although he beat nothing.

1. Mr Maestro was plain the Autumn Stakes, but can improve and he certainly has the class to figure.

Race 6 - 3:40PM Carlton Draught Peter Young Stakes Tips (1800m)

Selections: 2,10,4,11.

Open affair, where I kept coming back to 2. EMISSARY, who may have won the Melbourne Cup if it was a firmer surface. He's no out-and-out, one-paced stayer though, having saluted first-up in the Heatherlie (1700m) in Aug and he's tuned up for this return nicely, with two quiet jump-outs followed by an impressive Tatura trial win.

10. Steinem could be the best suited at 1800m, with the daughter of Frankel vulnerable over a strong 2000m. Recorded some nice efforts last time in against sharper types and may have found her race here.

I feel this is a race that 4. Young Werther could easily pick off, arriving fitter second-up after a fair 1600m return. He's getting costly, though.

11. Deny Knowledge was six weeks between runs on Feb 11 and fair vs the pattern. Gets a soft lead here?

Race 7 - 4:20PM Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Tips (1200m)

Selections: 12,5,2,1.

The blinkers and tongue tie go on 12. STEEL CITY, which gives us confidence, as despite having the best form. she's been a little weak late in both starts. This filly has started fav twice against two genuine Golden Slipper chances in Red Resistance and Learning To Fly, who both won their next outings and barrier five is perfect.

5. Brave Halo is the most talented runner from the Prelude, where he was a well backed fav and there were excuses, as he was held-up for most of the straight. Would've preferred him drawn in a shade more, though.

2. Arkansaw Kid was one of the most affected by Millenium fall, so forgiving that. Hasn't put a hoof wrong otherwise and could be a blowout ($46.00 @ Neds).

1. Barber is somewhat like last year's winner Daumier, i.e. lacks class, but can win purely on professionalism.

Race 8 - 5:00PM Lamaro's Hotel Futurity Stakes Tips (1400m)

Selections: 1,3,2,7.

It was a classic case of fitness giving out first-up and despite appearing a little plain to the eye, 1. I'M THUNDERSTRUCK was only beaten just over half a length and was heavily supported there. Mick Price wanted to be more positive with him this prep and now having drawn barrier three, they can adopt those tactics.

Visually, 3. Mr Brightside produced the best run of the CF Orr Stakes and the clock backed it up, with the fastest last 800m/600m/400m and 200m of that event. Another that will strip fitter and likely settle closer.

Likely leader 2. Alligator Blood will improve off this return, but he's a fighter and with an All-Star Mile close, he shouldn't be all that away fitness-wise.

7. Mr Mozart is interestingly placed at Group 1 WFA level, although it was a nice return and he maps well here.

Race 9 - 5:40PM Ladbrokes Oakleigh Plate Tips (1100m)

Selections: 9,16,3,8.

After winning three of four in spring, including her last two at group level, it has been a long-range plan to have 9. ASFOORA firing in the Oakleigh Plate fresh. What impressed me most last prep was her ability to bounce straight back after a second-up mishap, which isn't easy to do, especially given her inexperience at the time.

We have a reference between 16. Zapateo and Asfoora, with the Godolphin mare launching late in the last Oct up the straight (should've finished closer). Great fresh performer and this does look a first-up target.

3. Masked Crusader is as reliable as an ashtray on a motorbike, although he could easily blow this field away. Been right there in much stronger races.

8. Uncommon James was a pass mark fresh off an injury enforced break. Big chance with any improvement.

Verdict

Godolphin have a strong hand at Sandown, with Spacewalk (Race 4) the pick of them, while Pericles (Race 5) is the one to beat in the Autumn Classic.

Laced Up Heels (Race 2) beat Amelia's Jewel off a similar set-up last prep.
