Rosehill Tips January 18
Race 1 - 12:30PM Chandon Handicap Tips (1100m)
Best: 6. Wodeton. He's well in the market for some autumn features and should he justify a short quote in Saturday's debut, Wodeton could be the Golden Slipper favourite after this.
Coolmore forked out $1.6 million the son of Wooton Bassett at last year's Magic Millions and it's worth noting that his younger sister was bought by Coolmore at the recent sales for $1.15 million.
The Chris Waller trained-colt from the same family as Hong Kong champion Silent Witness and he's been moved well in two public showings, with the latest coming on January 3 at Warwick Farm.
Value: 8. Miss Fleetwood. She's a half-sister to Rise Of The Masses. who saluted on a Heavy 10 on debut as a two-year-old and he was also a Heavy 9 winner at Group three level as a juvenile.
She has been a little raw, but Miss Fleetwood has shown some potential at the trials and of the pick of them was her latest when taking out a Canterbury heat on a Heavy 8.
The Michael Freedman yard always warrants respect when it comes to these early two-year-old races and with three trials under the belt, that fitness could be crucial on a testing track.
Race 2 - 1:05PM TAB Highway Handicap Tips (1400m)
Best: 6. Wal's Angels. The December 28 Highway rated well while he was a big price in that 1200m edition, Wal's Angels arguably wins that event with any luck in transit.
He was looking for a run on straightening and the gelding only got clear when it was all over, while the rise in distance to 1400m is a positive for Saturday's second-up tilt.
The son of Harry Angel was successful on heavy ground when completing a hat-trick last campaign and he was equally as impressive prior to that when saluting over seven furlongs at Albury.
Value: 15. Zippo Idea. After a slow getaway, Zippo Idea managed a third-of-nine finish when resuming last month and the form from that December 18 event at Scone has stood up.
Code In Time (runner-up) landed big bets when taking out a provincial BM64 at his next start, which reads well for Highway level and this four-year-old was a second-up winner on wet ground early last year.
It hasn't been a great start to the campaign, with the rider dropped via her fresh tilt on November 19 before completing a quiet tick-over trial and a senior hoop is now aboard.
Race 3 - 1:40PM Precise Air Handicap Tips (1100m)
Best: 5. Polygot. This Godolphin galloper returns gelded and he was proven on wet ground throughout his first prep, which included all-the-way breakthrough on a Heavy 8 last winter.
A testing surface fresh isn't ideal, however, James Cummings often has his sprinters ready to go first-up and Polygot arrives to this return tilt off two trials (won the latest at Rosehill).
He's from a very good family, with the son of Lonhro being out of Wordcraft, who was the first foal from Forensics (three-time Group 1 winner) and J-Mac sticks from the most recent workout.
Value: 2. Iron Hawk. The Gary Portelli-trained colt was a debut winner on a Soft 7 and he defeated Silmarillion in that Warwick Farm affair (she was a Listed winner two starts later).
He then did enough in stronger company despite not saluting again in three subsequent appearances and in an open class heat, his last piece of work was much better than it reads.
He'll likely to prosper over more ground, with 1400m-1600m likely the right range, but a testing 1100m brings him into it and he's already a fresh wet-track winner over this distance.
Race 4 - 2:15PM Midway Handicap Tips (1200m)
Best: 16. Shohisha. I do like finding a progressive three-year-old in the Midway's and Shohisha fits that bill, with the youngster arriving here off a runner-up finish in the Listed Gosford Guineas.
The filly recovered from a slow getaway in that December 31 effort, where she recorded the second-fastest last 400m and 200m of the card, while she also beat an in-form Midnight Dynamite.
She was thrown in the deep end at Group 2 level after a Warwick Farm debut win and especially giving there only one lead-up trial, there should be plenty of improvement to come.
Value: 7. Rush Hour. He could simply be a wet tracker, with Rush Hour failing in a decent race first-up at Wyong when in the market and that Magic Millions attempt was on a Good 3.
It was an improved showing at Port Macquarie last starts, where he just peaked late after chasing a hot tempo and he'll appreciate a 5kg drop in the weights for this third-up try.
He gets underfoot conditions to suit on Saturday and with a few runs now under the belt following a decent break, Rush Hour has the profile to run a race at a double figure quote
Race 5 - 2:50PM Ranvet Handicap Tips (2400m)
Best: 1. Gilded Water. His Majesty's representative is aiming for a winning hat-trick to open his Australian account for Ciaron Maher and the four-year-old did bolt in at BM78 level last start.
Gilded Water relished 2400m in that last run, as he needed every bit of 2000m when landing good bets fresh and that form has stood up through Alalcance (narrowly beaten next start at Listed level).
He's now right up in the weights, with an extra 4.5kg for remaining in the same grade, but there's better races down the track for this progressive import and he's only third-up on Saturday.
Value: 7. Lenape Vibe. He's still lightly raced and a return to a more testing surface could bring about improvement with Lenape Vibe, who saluted on a Heavy 10 two starts back.
The gelding was nearly a month between runs when stepping to 2000m on January 4 and while he didn't settle enough to run out a strong ten furlongs, he was only beaten two lengths.
Both career victories have come on wet tracks (Soft 7 or worse) and while 2400m is unknown territory for the Chris Waller-trained four-year-old, breeding suggests that he can run it.
Race 6 - 3:25PM Racing And Sports Handicap Tips (1500m)
Best: 2. Emmadella. She's up in the weights off two Midway's to open her summer campaign, however, both runs have been strong and there's still room for improvement here third-up.
Emmadella is putting together a tidy record, having recorded win number four on December 28 and she was a heavy track winner at Rosehill in winter, so she appears adept on all services.
The daughter of All Too Hard has recorded the fastest closing splits of both of her events this time in and the consistent mare hasn't put in bad run yet (biggest defeat was a near three-length second).
Value: 8. Decadent Tale. Although Decadent Tale was well held via a fifth-of-ten finish on return, she was doing the best work lights and she's back against her own sex here.
Wet ground gives the seven-year-old a sniff on Saturday, with her last victory coming on a heavy track under Jason Collett and he takes back the reins for this 1500m attempt.
She's been in the money in three of four second-up runs, which includes a placing over this track/trip last summer and any improvement off the encouraging return would have her in the mix.
Race 7 - 4:00PM Asahi Super Dry January Cup Tips (2000m)
Best: 4. Hopeful. On class, Osipenko is the one to beat in the January, but the early market elect has had plenty of chances and 3.5kg more on a wet track won't be an easy task.
The jury is still out on Hopeful after a poor start to the season, but off a freshen-up, it was a much improved effort last Saturday at Wyong and he didn't love that tight-turning circuit
A testing 2000m should suit and there's encouraging form from last season in better company, which includes a placing over this track/trip at Listed level via his last try on the seven-day turnaround.
Value: 7. Akua'rius. This seven-year-old is still lightly raced and ahead of this first-up assignment, Akua'rius worked well behind Sandpaper (fresh winner) on January 3.
He did enough over four runs in his first campaign under Robert Quinn and the pick of those performances was a runner-up finish at Rosehill, which was recorded over the 2000m.
Akua'rius was a German Listed winner at 2800m before coming to Australia and in what's a wide open edition of the January Cup, I'm happy to include him at a big price.
Race 8 - 4:35PM Captivant @ Kia Ora Handicap Tips (1300m)
Best: 7. Rise Of The Masses. The forgotten runner could be Rise Of The Masses, who disappointed on return as a single figure chance, however, there were excuses (poor recovery).
Also, the form from that December 7 event has stood up, with two subsequent winners produced from the race and the five-year-old looked back on track when winning a trial 12 days later.
The Waterhouse & Bott-trained galloper was gelded ahead of this campaign and while he has a wide draw to overcome, he'll roll forward under Tim Clark (good chance of getting the lead).
Value: 3. Wymark. He will improve from this resumption and furnish over more ground as this prep wears on, although class can still take Wymark a long way in what isn't a strong race.
He came a long way over late summer and early autumn periods last year, with the son of Savabeel going from a Newcastle maiden success to a Group 2 victory when bookending the four-peat.
Both summer trials have been fine and he already has a good association with Zac Wadick, as the 2kg claiming apprentice was on for two provincial wins before Wymark came to Sydney.
Race 9 - 5:15PM TAB Handicap Tips (1500m)
Best: 7. Silent Impact. We'll get a better gauge on Silent Impact here, with the lightly raced six-year-old recording a last-start third at Randwick and that followed an unlucky 1300m return.
He's had problems, with this being the first time that the Waterhouse & Bott camp have got in deeper than second-up into a campaign since 2022 and he did show stakes ability as a youngster.
Silent Impact failed via his only previous try on heavy ground, although that was a return attempt back in the spring of 2022 and his three career victories have all come on soft tracks.
Value: 3. Age Of Sail. He won on Australian debut over a mile just over 12 months ago before just missing in a BM78 won by Kettle Hill, who has since been competitive in stronger company.
Nothing went right for Age Of Sail last campaign, where the Brisbane fresh outing was effectively a barrier trial and Princess Rhaenys (winner) took out a Listed race at her next start.
He then badly held-up in a few Sydney runs before the prep fell away late, but he can come to hand early and there's handy relief here courtesy of the 3kg claim from Benjamin Osmond.
Race 10 - 5:55PM Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap Tips (1100m)
Best: 7. Bundeena. He has overcome wide runs to salute previously, but fitness gave out late when Bundeena covered ground via a Randwick Midway over 1100m on January 4.
The five-year-old atoned from an unlucky fresh run last pep when winning on a Soft 7 track second-up and despite getting over a little further earlier in his career, keeping him to 1100m is fine.
There was intent to ride him forward in the recent return and with speed drawn around him in this BM78, I wouldn't mind seeing Zac Lloyd look for cover early before producing him late.
Value: 12. Oakfield Duke. Class-wise, Oakfield Duke is perhaps s a shade out of his depth at BM78 level, however, a testing track will bring the six-year-old bride into calculations here.
The grey is a mudlark, with all six of wins coming on rain affected ground and he's never been out of the money on a heavy track, with the latest resulting in a Canterbury victory last winter.
He has no first-up form and considering the poor fresh stats, the January 4 return was quite good, where Oakfield Duke settled off the speed and he had more to offer late when held-up.
