Rosehill Tips September 28

Race 1 - 11:55AM Midway Handicap Tips (1300m)

Best: 18. Alabama State. The penny is starting to drop for this colt and as we saw last Saturday with El Castello, these Midway's can produce a progressive three-year-old.

After overcoming trouble to salute first-up when heavily backed, a wide draw proved costly in the September 14 Midway here and he was good late against the pattern of that race.

Alabama State shouldn't have any trouble running out 1300m, especially down in the weights from a low draw and with more favours third-up, he can bring up win three.

Value: 3. Victory Lane. We were with Victory Lane at an each-way price a fortnight ago, where he came with a wide run from the rear to finish midfield in that return attempt.

The five-year-old recorded the fastest last 600m/400m and 2000m of that September 14 Midway and along with an extra 100m suiting second-up, he also draws kinder.

He's handles all conditions, so rain won't worry him and second-up last prep, Victory Lane split Ruby Flyer and Well Times in a Provincial Qualifier at Kembla Grange.

Race 2 - 12:30PM TAB Highway Handicap Tips (1500m)

Best: 3. Marenaro. This ex-Chris Waller-trained galloper is ticking over well for the new yard and off two solid runs this prep for Dean Mirfin, he's well placed to 1500m third-up.

He caught the eye fresh over 1200m before contesting a Class 1 at Hawkesbury and while he didn't threaten, the gelding ran the fastest last 600m and 400m of that race.

That latest provincial effort should top him off nicely for this Highway tilt and with Nash Rawiller a big jockey upgrade, Marenaro can give this shake at decent odds.

Value: 7. Showman. He's been a decent recruit for the Stephen Lee stable, with nearly 60k in prize money accrued for new connections, who paid just 9k for the ex-Victorian.

Both wins have come on wet ground, however, Showman has still been competitive on firmer tracks and this is easier than the BM68 he contested at Doomben second-up.

There were excuses prior to that at Murwillumbah, where the six-year-old was in the inferior going and he was only narrowly defeated in Brisbane third-up last campaign.

Race 3 - 1:05PM Toyota Forklifts Colin Stephen Quality Tips (2400m)

Best: 7. Campaldino. It appears right with Strathay and Matusalem fighting for favouritism, albeit the latter is big query on wet ground and both have been up for a while.

Campaldino could be the one peaking on Saturday, with the Waterhouse & Bott-trained galloper just tiring late third-up when setting a good tempo over this track/trip.

He may have needed a 2400m hit-out third-up to really bring him on and softer conditions could be what the ex-Kiwi is searching for (both NZ wins were on heavy tracks).
Value: 3. Canberra Legend. This European import has been underwhelming in most Australian outings for Chris Waller, although his best performance was on a Soft 6.

We regularly see Waller turnaround out of form horses and now hard-fit on what could be more favourable conditions, Canberra Legend could jump out of the ground.

He has a host of gear changes ahead of Saturday's assignment, which include blinkers being applied and with a good fitness platform, there's no excuses for him here.

Race 4 - 1:40PM Egroup Protective Services Handicap Tips (1900m)

Best: 8. Unusual Legacy. With the Colin Stephen allowing the winner of Race 3 entry into The Metropilitan next Saturday, I'm surprised that Unusual Legacy isn't contesting that event.

He may well get into that staying feature irrespective, given the amount of runners ahead of him in the ballot are unlikely to go there and that Group 1 could be at his mercy.

Unusual Legacy is one of Chris Waller's more progressive stayers and third-up after saluting as a good thing should here a fortnight ago, he's hard to go past in this BM88.

Value: 6. Sunsets. Having defeated Riff Rocket in a Group 3 before placing in the Victoria Derby, Sunsets showed promise as late two-year-old/early three-year-old.

The son of Dundeel wasn't able to progress in the autumn, hence connections deciding the geld him ahead of what a nice September 7 return over 1600m at The Valley.

He still found the line well after over-racing at stages (race-fastest last 200m) and the runner-up from that event (Regal Zous) franked that form at Caulfield last Saturday.

Race 5 - 2:15PM Petaluma Heritage Stakes Tips (1100m)

Best: 3. Gatsby's. Given how impressive he was over this track/trip when taking out the Rosebud first-up, this three-year-old was disappointing in San Domenico Stakes.

Gatsby's was no match for Storm Boy in that last appearance and it's worth noting that J-Mac said post race that the colt wasn't as comfortable on firmer ground there.

It was only start two overall, but he was also plain second-up in the Pago Pago before a spell and with underfoot conditions likely to suit, he gets a chance to atone third-up.

Value: 8. Winning Proposal. It was a pass mark return from Winning Proposal, where the filly was beaten under 1.5-lengths as the pick of the on-speed brigade of that Group 2.

She should take a lot out of that first-up performance and that was the case in winter when saluting second-up over this trip on heavy ground (doesn't want any further).

That Furious Stakes form should hold up in what's a thinner race overall and off what looks a soft map from barrier three, Winning Proposal has some claims second-up.

Race 6 - 2:50PM Irresistible Pools & Spas Handicap Tips (1400m)

Best: 3. Suparazi. This Victorian visitor isn't the easiest horse to place, especially this time of year with a rating of 90, so Ben Brisbourne sends him north for a BM88 third-up.

Suparazi is in good touch, with the six-year-old following nice lead-up work with a second to Extratwo on return and that winner was runner-up in a Group 3 a week later.

Staying at 1200m worked against him last time, although that second-up effort was still strong against a smart Miss Aria and now suited to 1400m, he's a big price in an open race.
Value: 13. Konasana. I've always had plenty of time for Konasana, who was still doing a bit wrong throughout her three-year-old season and some mixed form backs that up.

If she's furnished as an early season four-year-old, then the Chris Waller-trained mare can at the very least measure up at Group level and 1400m-1600m is her right range.

Her most brilliant display last prep came on heavy ground over this distance and after having excuses in the Hawkesbury Guineas, she atoned before going to Queensland.

Race 7 - 3:25PM Racing And Sports Golden Pendant Tips (1400m)

Best: 2. Amelia's Jewel. The ex-WA star wasn't given any favours last season when prepared as a sprinter and I Iike that new trainer Annabel Neasham is keeping it simple this spring.

Amelia's Jewel is best suited as a miler (maybe 2000m in time) and off a nice stable debut over seven furlongs, this 1400m Group 2 vs her own sex is perfect placement.

The Tramway form through Royal Patronage reads well for this (third at WFA level last week) and while wet ground is an unknown, she should put this lot away if she handles it.

Value: 6. Makarena. Belclare going hard up front was always going to set it up for the swoopers over 1200m in the Sheraco Stakes and that's how it played out.

Especially given Makarena was only first-up in that Group 2, there was merit to that September 14 effort, where the four-year-old was doing the donkey work.

Classy sprinters filled the trifecta of that event and now out to what I believe is her pet trip (1400m), Makarena can settle into an easier rhythm on the speed second-up.

Race 8 - 4:05PM James Squire Golden Rose Tips (1400m)

Best: 1. Broadsiding. The 'Blue Army' have had success in this Group 1 over recent years, with Epaulette (2012), Exosphere (2015), Astern (2016) and Bivouac (2019) all past Golden Rose winners.

First-up on what could be a wet track won't be easy, however, Broadsiding was only effective on rain affected ground prior to his Group 1 JJ Atkins triumph in June.

I suspect James Cummings wants plenty petrol of in the tank for a Caulfield Guineas/Cox Plate assault, but he's trialled up superbly and 1400m is an ideal starting point.
Next Best: 4. Linebacker. He caught the eye in the Run To The Rose when coming home from the rear to grab fourth and he'll be suited up to 1400m (his last win came over this trip).

Linebacker easily accounted for Broadsiding via that last victory and the fav narrowly turned the tables in the Champagne Stakes on what was very testing ground.

From a wide barrier and with bigger targets going forward, they opted for a conservative ride first-up over 1200m, but he's capable of settling closer to the speed.

Value: 8. Emirate. There was merit to the return, where Emirate was slow away and while the winner proved too brilliant from off the speed, he still chased hard to the line.

That was for the first defeat for the Chris Waller-trained colt, who was spelled after a 1300m Rosehill triumph in June and he was spelled despite the JJ Atkins looming.

Although it was only in maiden company, Emirate still picked up well on heavy ground via his debut victory over and that success was recorded over an unsuitable trip.

Race 9 - 4:45PM Canadian Club Shannon Stakes Tips (1500m)

Best: 7. New Energy. The main question mark is wet ground, with his last heavy track attempt coming over 2000m and he simply didn't settle enough to run out a strong 10 furlongs.

I suspect 1600m is as far as New Energy wants and from the Theo Marks lead-up, he recorded the second-fastest last 200m of that race despite never being clear.

The Australian Bloodstock import was first-up in his second prep for Ciaron Maher a fortnight ago and this 1500m affair looks ideal, providing he handles the conditions.

Value: 12. Charterhouse. He has plenty of chances and as a result, Charterhouse could well start longer closer to the jump, with around 25/1 his quote in the early markets.

The seven-year-old has still been mostly consistent this year without winning and it's well worth noting that his best runs in Australia have all been on wet tracks.

He defeated Just Folk on soft ground last spring and as a hard-fit wet tracker who plummets in the weights here, Charterhouse is the blowout with conditions likely to suit.

Race 10 - 5:25PM Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap Tips (1100m)

Best: 11. Pharari. Despite being touted as a stakes class galloper ahead of the Listed Creswick, Pharari was hard to come into at short price given the maiden and BM64 references.

The daughter of American Pharoah was tipped out after that Flemington miss and she showed her firm credentials at Sandown on September 4 when bolting in on a Good 3.

This is a step up in grade, but it's the right race if she's to continue progressing and along with being able to handle all surfaces, Pharari also makes her own luck on the speed.
Value: 1. Shezanalister. There were excuses for in her tenth-of-thirteen finish at Rosehill las start, where Shezanalister found traffic late after settling towards the rear.

A wide gate forced that cold ride, however, the daughter of Star Turn can land closer here from barrier five, while her prior BM88 and Group 2 Missile Stakes form stands out.

Shezanalister is up in weight due to the class drop, but she carried the same impost when winning in this company back in July and the $18-$19 is overs in the last.
