Rosehill Tips January 13

Race 1 - 12:35PM Midway Handicap Tips (1500m)

Best: 2. Jumeirah Beach. He's no world beater, but this Freedman-trained five-year-old is very honest, with his only real failure coming on a heavy track in autumn last year.

While he was a beaten fav on December 23 at Eagle Farm, Jumeirah Beach didn't quite run out of strong 1820m there and the drop back to 1500m is in his favour.

He's been up a little while now, but his form prior to that Brisbane visit was strong enough for a Midway and he could potentially lead this field from an inside draw.

Value: 3. Poseidon Ruler. Given the slashing third-up effort behind a smart Terra Mater, the last star drift was a little perplexing and that December 30 effort was only even.

It's worth noting that the blinkers were removed before that last start attempt and along with the visors going on here, he also has a 3kg claimer engaged.

Poseidon Ruler carries 4kg less from his fourth-up tilt and with a 1400m under the belt, he should be at peak fitness.

Race 2 - 1:10PM TAB Highway Handicap Tips (1100m)

Best: 11. I'm A Steel. This last-start debut winner is an interesting runner, with the filly having bolted in at Nowra on December 31, where she was backed as if unbeatable.

Although that was on a heavy surface, I'm A Steel was equally as impressive on firmer ground in her trial and this isn't the strongest Class 3 Highway.

The Joseph and Jones stable isn't afraid to take them through country grades, so we have to respect the placement here in what will be a challenge against seasoned rivals.

Value: 5. Tai Lung. We always have to be wary of Terry Robinson runners in these Highways, while Tai Lung did place over the track/trip back in July following a Class 1 win.

Although well held in third, that was behind both Mojo Magic and Salire there, who are two handy country gallopers and that form reads well for this.

The query is firmer ground, as all of his wins have come on wet tracks, however, that last Highway placing was on a Good 4 and he does arrive off a soft victory.

Race 3 - 1:45PM TAB Highway Handicap Tips (1100m)

Best: 1. Penthouse. A galloper who was stakes placed twice as a two-year-old, Penthouse has interestingly been decent prices via both Highway wins.

The Matthew Dale-trained mare is still Class 3 eligible and connections will have loftier goals for the four-year-old this campaign provided she handles this assignment.

The daughter of Capitalist couldn't have been any more impressive when winning a December 29 trial at Canberra and 3kg claimer Hannah Williams has gate one at her disposal.

Value: 9. Syrian Star. First-up of a long spell, it's not exactly the ideal setup for this mare over the 1100m at Rosehill, but I think class takes her a long way.

I've always had some time for Syrian Star, who won two of four attempts over her second campaign before third prep, where her form tapered off late.

To be fair, her last two showings were at either metro or listed level and one of those was over a trip she didn't run out, while her biggest win has come fresh over 1000m.

Race 4 - 2:20PM Inglis Classic Sale 11-13 Feb Handicap Tips (1300m)

Best: 11. Infancy. This filly was consistent throughout her first campaign, winning her first two starts at Queensland provincial level in a prep that concluded with a stakes placing.

She did fail first-up this prep at Warwick Farm, but there were excuses for that defeat, with Infancy pulling up lame and she quickly bounced back second-up.

The three-year-old arguably should have won that December 26 attempt, where she was held up from the 400m to the 150m and that form through Chilli Filly should hold up.
Value: 9. King Of Dubai. This Jason Coyle-trained gelding is underrated, a progressive three-year-old who resumed with a Canterbury triumph in what was a decent maiden.

In a strong BM72 following that, he wasn't as suited to staying at 1100m despite another competitive effort and third-up, he ran into a smart Sydney Bowler.

That winner would be an odds-on fav in this race and fourth-up with a 1300m run under the belt, King Of Dubai has another favourable set-up on Saturday.

Race 5 - 2:55PM Chandon Handicap Tips (1200m)

Best: 2. Winning Verse. This is one of the more open races on the program, where an evenly matched field of fillies and mares clash, and Winning Verse is among the each-way chances.

She won arguably a slightly stronger affair over this track/trip back in June before heading to Melbourne and she carries a similar weight to that last win.

The five-year-old arrives off two very soft trial wins, which were both completed on soft ground, albeit most of her form has come on good surfaces.

Value: 4. Billiondollarbaby. There were some excuses when resuming over 1100m on December 2, where the Snowden-trained sprinter was in restricted room at key stages.

Billiondollarbaby was disappointing following that and while she's backed against her own sex here, the bolter's price is deserved off that latest effort.

She'd give this a genuine shake off her last prep form, which ended with a competitive fifth at listed level and she maps for a lovely run in transit.

Race 6 - 3:30PM Farnan Yearlings Selling Now Handicap Tips (1800m)

Best: 3. Aristonous. He looked the good thing of December last start following an excellent return, but the import preceded to put in an absolute shocker there.

It was too bad to be true for Aristonous and as a result of that massive defeat, stewards forced him to trial again and he completed that January 2 heat nicely.

Interestingly, nothing was found in the steward's report after that second-up performance, but the Annabel Neasham stable can turn them around quickly off bad runs.

Value: 1. Tony Be. Especially given he had no prior first-up form, his Brisbane returned in a decent BM85 at Eagle Farm was a cracker and this is a better setup.

His biggest win in Australia came off a similar pattern, with Tony Be going 1400m to 1800m here in November 2022, where he bolted him with 60kg.

He did record the fastest last 800m and 600m of his fresh assignment in Brisbane and after the 2kg claim here, he's quite well in with 58.5kg.

Race 7 - 4:15PM James Squire January Cup Tips (2000m)

Best: 12. Naval College. This is a lot harder coming up to Listed level third-up, however, he's in at the right time of year for this and he now carries the 53kg minimum.

Naval College had a gun run when saluting second up on December 30 and the market is respecting that form enough through Touristic, who is single figures here.

Like many imports, the five-year-old has improved again in his second Australian campaign, although he has been consistent throughout his whole time under Annabel Neasham.
Value: 11. Otyrar. Chris Waller prepares three long-priced chances in the January Cup and while this is the roughest of all of them, I wouldn't be shocked if he runs well.

The 1400m return at listed level was practically another trial and the six-year-old did improve second-up despite being well held, where he stepped up to the 1650m.

He ran the second fastest last 200m of that Doomben race despite being unsuited and over a more suitable trip third-up, he's not hopeless at a $50+ quote.

Race 8 - 5:00PM Ranvet Handicap Tips (1300m)

Best: 3. Zou Tiger. We'll get a much better gauge on Zou Tiger here, a four-year-old who was surprisingly in the market first-up in the Canterbury Sprint off a trial that was just fair.

A slow recovery and bleed from one nostril was detected following that January 1 return and a softer tempo in this 1300m event will allow him to cross a little easier.

He was gelded ahead of this prep despite being Group placed four times last season (two at Group 1 level) and with a more favourable setup second-up, he gets another chance.

Value: 1. Ucalledit. It's a very competitive race, but Ucalledit is as genuine as any of these, an Australian Bloodstock who has won 10 of 26 starts.

While he improved as his last campaign wore on, which included back-to-back stakes wins in winter, the son of the Zacinto does have good first-up stats.

The Kris Lees runner appears to be ticking over at the trials and with relief after the 3kg claim along with a soft map, he has to be included.

Race 9 - 5:35PM Toyota Forklifts Handicap Tips (1200m)

Best: 8. Boston Rocks. He does seem well enough found at the current quote given he had every chance in his first-up victory, however, Boston Rocks is open to improvement.

The three-year-old showed that last prep when stepping from 1000m to 1200m and was evident in his recent resumption, he's capable of taking a sit.

From barrier four with speed either side of him, Tom Sherry can ride to how the track is playing, as he's capable of leading if there's a big on-peed bias.

Value: 3. So Good So Cool. Sarah Ryan is enjoying a good season so far, with the Wyong trainer having prepared 16 winners at a strike rate of just under 22%.

While So Good So Cool hasn't been one of those, the five-year-old is building towards a victory, having resumed with a cracking run over 1000m at Randwick.

He did get a long way back last Saturday in a BM88 and with a kinder run in transit on the backup in an easier race, he has to be considered off that fresh run.

Race 10 - 6:10PM TAB Handicap Tips (1400m)

Best: 2. Testator Silens. Now fourth-up and coming out of a brutal affair where he made ground to just miss on December 30, it's well and truly D-Day here for Testator Silens.

A lightly raced six-year-old who was prepared in the country before joining Joe Pride this prep, he finds somewhat of a nothing affair here on Saturday.

I've never been a fan of horses racing in earmuffs and with that piece of gear removed for this attempt, he now looks set to peak, with the gelding staying at 1400m.
Value: 5. Starman. It's been somewhat of an interrupted prep, with Chris Waller scratching him a few times due to wide barriers, but he simply had to run on December 30.

Given Testator Silens is coming out of the same race, Starman has to have some claims, with the son of Zoustar doing the donkey work behind a tearaway leader there.

Now third-up with a soft draw, he's open to improvement off that brave last-start performance and he could be the main threat to our on-top selection.
