Rosehill Tips August 5

Race 1 - 11:30AM TAB Highway Plate Tips (1800m)

Selections: 5,9,2,14.

On an each-way basis at huge odds, 5. MR SEVERINO isn't the worst, a galloper that rounded out his last prep with back-to-back Highway seconds and that included a runner-up finish over this trip. After two fair performances at BM66 level, it was effectively a trial when going from 1600m to 1000m last Friday and he was good late. The six-year-old should push forward from a middle draw.

9. Burrandana may well win this by default, but I can't get him anywhere near $1.90. There's been more depth to his recent Highway's, although he had every chance last start and is now being tried at 1800m (hasn't won past 1300m).

2. Seahaven was badly checked second-up, hence the big losing margin, but he was consistent prior to that and 1800m should suit this one-paced trier.

1800m is the query with 14. Agirlsbestfriend, a mare that's shown a turn-of-foot multiple times over seven furlongs.

Race 2 - 12:05PM Midway Handicap Tips (1100m)

Selections: 4,7,13,14.

After the Dancing Alone scratching, 4. HARD TO SAY is the most talented horse in the field, albeit he's mixed his form, with two wins last campaign surrounded by some disappointing runs. That was his third prep and first as a gelding, so the four-year-old has upside and he's shown versatility, having led to win a maiden fresh in Nov, while a colder ride in Jan resulted in a brilliant Brisbane victory.

A lack of first-up form with 7. Ningaloo Star is a knock, but the winter trials were both strong and Collett sticks following the latest hit-out. She beat a subsequent stakes winner in Feb before contesting the Canberra Guineas.

Another John Sargent runner at big odds ($27.00 @ Neds) is 13. The Seven Seas, a mare that recorded a winning hat-trick last prep. She's shown enough to measure up here.

Include the honest 14. Super Bright. She's finding it hard to win, but continues to be very competitive in this grade.

Race 3 - 12:40PM Schweppes Handicap Tips (2400m)

Selections: 5,2,3,4.

Having also accepted for a 2000m BM78, Annabel Neasham instead steps 5. ARISTONOUS out to 2400m via this much smaller field in Sydney compared to the Melbourne line-up. While he seemed a good thing at Caulfield last start following two brilliant wins to open his Aus career, he was set too a big task from back and wide. In an average race, the five-year-old gets another chance.

2. United Nations could be the one that jumps out of the ground second-up following a pass mark on Aus debut over 1800m. He's well up in the weights with the class drop, with connections opting for J-Mac and 63kg over a claimer.

3. Kirkeby relished the rise in distance fourth-up on July 22 and remaining over the same track/trip and grade here, he's only up 1kg after the Zac Lloyd claim.

4. So United is limited, but he's the hard-fit leader in a small field and the Waterhouse & Bott yard are flying at present.

Race 4 - 1:15PM Vale John Duggan Handicap Tips (1400m)

Selections: 8,3,9,5.

While a strong speed helped 8. PINK BAROQUE salute first-up, that should top her off nicely for this 1400m assignment and that Canterbury form should've been franked more, with Memoria and The Unicorn both unlucky at their next outings. The four-year-old won her maiden over this trip and placed at 1800m last time in, so a fresh win over 1250m is a positive for the rest of the prep.

3. Kangaroo Court is starting to furnish in his second campaign, with two wins and a narrow loss from three starts. He exploded once clear to win here on July 22, beating Howgoodareyou in the process, a stablemate that won on Wed.

9. Dakota Vroom was a little plain second-up after a strong return win, although she was back in a leader's race and draws kinder for this step-up in trip.

5. Ivan's Hero defeated two subsequent winners and a handy Time Quest at Sandown last start. That reads okay for this.

Race 5 - 1:50PM Elite Sand & Soil Handicap Tips (1200m)

Selections: 9,2,3,1.

You can tie the first-up form of 9. LOVERO in with the two favs here, as the daughter of Astern was very unlucky when a narrow second to Petulant fresh and the second fav beat the market elect (Waverider Buoy) last start. She now arrives in winning form, with a much-deserved victory at Gosford last start and carries 5.5kg less from that July 13 event. She maps for a soft run under Collett.

2. Waverider Buoy will again have to overcome a wide draw, having only just missed to Petulant last start and she was working home against the on-speed/rails bias of that July 22 program. Needs luck, but she's still a leading chance.

3. Petulant has won two of her last three and another low draw puts her right into contention again. Only meets the fav 1kg worse off from that recent clash.

1. No Way Ever made a solid start to the prep on July 15. Has also accepted for Flemington and this is a weaker option.

Race 6 - 2:25PM Jockey Celebration Day Handicap Tips (1350m)

Selections: 6,2,5,3.

After putting the writing on the wall with two strong trials and a decent 1100m resumption, 6. WATEGOS upset Brudenell on July 22, a galloper that was defeated by the flying Insurrection the start prior. Having won over 1550m deep into his last campaign, the five-year-old needed every bit of 1200m second-up, so there's a chance of further improvement now to 1350m and he stays at BM78 level.

2. Soami relished the drop to Midway grade last month, where he first ended a long drought before going back-to-back on July 22. Considering the on-speed/rails bias of that meeting, it was a big performance coming from back and wide.

The honest 5. Regal Pom was scratched from last Sat and from gate one under Ryan Maloney, they can lead or take the box-seat. He rarely runs a bad race.

3. King Of Naples is going for a hat-trick, but he now has a wide alley to overcome after economical runs of late.

Race 7 - 3:00PM NSWJA Jockey Reunion Handicap Tips (1200m)

Selections: 5,8,7,1.

If they can make ground, 5. LEGIO TEN will be hard to beat, with the Godolphin four-year-old back in Sydney after four Vic runs since returning as a gelding. After two 1100m triumphs, he was unsuited in a slowly run Creswick and as a $2.60 fav, he simply one better on July 15 and that winner heads the Aurie's Star market. Back in trip suits and his Melb form is stronger than what his rivals bring.

The most interesting runner here is 8. Foujita San, who was the early Caulfield Guineas fav (around 12 months ago) and he's now been gelded after not producing as a three-year-old. He was strong late via a 900m Rosehill trial on July 21.

I'm a part owner of a frustrating one that should've beaten 7. Time to Boogie in Jan and the way he handled a BM72 field last start was a surprise. Makes his own luck.

1. Brudenell had every chance as a short fav third-up, but was only edged out very late by Wategos, who is going well.

Race 8 - 3:40PM Toyota Forklifts Missile Stakes Tips (1200m)

Selections: 11,10,4,2.

Staying away from wet tracks is the key to 11. I AM ME, a Maher & Eustace mare that's won six of her last seven attempts on good ground and the one miss was a 2.15-length Oakleigh Plate defeat in February. Arriving off two strong lead-up trials ahead of this Missile Stakes resumption, she can potentially land in the box-seat early, as taking on the speedy Big Parade could bring her undone.

Joe Pride is arguably the best with tried sprinters and he now prepares 10. Argentia, an ex-Anthony & Sam Freedman galloper that's trialled up twice. Two of her three wins have come first-up and she was very fresh in her last hit-out.

Another on stable debut for Joe Pride is 4. Big Parade, who was always going to be well found off a monster trial win. Off such a long break, he's short enough here.

2. Ingratiating improved second-up to take out the Bletchingly and he's one of the class runners that has race fitness.

Race 9 - 4:15PM Petaluma Premier's Cup Prelude Tips (1800m)

Selections: 11,10,5,8.

2400m back to 1800m isn't conventional, although Annabel Neasham has freshened up 11. FAWKNER PARK, an import that's unbeaten from four Aus outings and he's been effective from 1500m-2400m. There a lot of Waller numbers here that are around their ceiling, whereas this lightly raced five-year-old is still untapped and he carries 7.5kg less from his latest. I'm not rushing to back anything else.

I'm not enthused by most of the Waller army, albeit outsider ($19.00 @ Betr10. Born A King makes as much appeal as any at the price. Unsuited first-up in what was effectively a decent 1300m trial, his form around this distance range is consistent.

With a solid winter base and now third-up over 1800m, 5. Bonny Ezra could be the one peaking for this and the J-Mac engagement is a strong enough lead.

8. Bold Mac is no star, but has held form throughout this year and the gelding won over this trip at Randwick last start.

Race 10 - 4:50PM TAB Handicap Tips (1500m)

Selections: 1,14,3.6.

It was somewhat of a hidden return from 1. KINGSHEIR, who missed the start after becoming restless in the gates, but his sectionals were strong, having recorded the second fastest last 600m and 200m of that July 22 affair, with Wollombi (Group winner) completing the quickest last 600m of the card in the same race. Now to a BM78, this is a big drop in grade and Zac Lloyd is a positive jockey change.

After working early second-up, 14. Amor Victorius stuck on okay and he was still a run short. The Bjorn Baker-trained gelding now has a soft map and is down on the 52.5kg minimum in a weak BM78. I think he only runs well.

3. Ausbred Rising Sun will likely be the best horse to come from this, a middle-distance type that went a long way in his first prep. He has the class to win fresh.

6. Gracilistyla has been unlucky all prep and now gets J-Mac. The bookies aren't feeling too generous with him, though.
