Rosehill Tips February 24

Race 1 - 12:30PM Midway Handicap Tips (1500m)

Best: 14. Smart Legend. The market has this right with the two So You Think gallopers heading the betting and with an extra run under his belt, I'm leaning the way of Smart Legend.

Of the two market elects, he appears to have the better set-up over 1500m third-up and Glad You Think So is a three-year-old who is likely to prosper over more ground.

He brings a short fresh starting price vs Whinchat via a fast run affair, who franked the form last week in a BM88, while he came again late second-up after initially being outsprinted.

Value: 5. Pharoah's Reign. Four of her five wins have come in the 1750m-2100m range and on stable debut for Gregory McFarlane, her fresh effort over 1350m was definitely a pass mark.

Treize (runner-up) is progressive and Pharoah's Reign stuck on well behind that rival, while she put more than a length on Dimaggio, who is generally competitive in this company.

Now being Midway eligible opens up more doors for the five-year-old, who beat a smart Lekvarte second-up last prep and off the return run, she makes some appeal at a big price.

Race 2 - 1:05PM TAB Highway Handicap Tips (1400m)

Best: 2. Belvedere Boys. He appeared the obvious selection in a Randwick Highway a fortnight ago and while he was a beaten fav there, were still plenty of merit to the run.

After beating a subsequent winner first-up in a Doomben Class 1, Belvedere Boys appeared to be looking for seven furlongs last start and the gelding gets that on Saturday.

Matthew Dunn has a terrific record in Highways and with regular partner in crime Nash Rawiller in the saddle, the son of Maurice can bounce back third-up.
Value: 16. Haysiri. A lightly raced four-year-old who won a decent country maiden made on debut last year. Haysiri was then tested in a provincial BM64 at start two.

He was spelled following that June 1 outing and while we only saw him once over spring, that effort resulted in a Class 1 win over 1300m on soft ground.

Haysiri resumed with a okay run in a metro BM64 before a messy last start attempt at Tamworth, where he was shuffled back before finding trouble in the run home.

Race 3 - 1:40PM Queen Bee Project Sprint Tips (1100m)

Best: 6. Xtravagant Star. A genuine wet track might be the query with this resuming sprinter, so the forecast between now and race day could tell the story.

After winning her first two starts, which included the Inglis Millennium back in 2022, her form did fall away after that before joining Ciaron Maher last campaign.

She should have been unbeaten in a two-run prep over August, as the mare covered with a weight when narrowly beaten fresh, but she atoned for that with a second-up win in this grade.

Value: 12. Epic Proportions. She had been very honest in five prior routings, so while the January 20 flop behind a subsequent Group winner was a head scratcher, she has been freshened up.

Firm ground was given as a reason to that subpar outing and with the best runs over her first prep coming on soft tracks, there is enough merit to that argument.

Epic Proportions has won a subsequent trial at Warwick Farm and if you forgive that last failure, then she has to be considered here down in the weights and from a low draw.

Race 4 - 2:15PM Tab Silver Slipper Stakes Tips (1100m)

Best: 9. Celerity. The each-way play outside of the market elects is this Godolphin filly, who made her debut a fortnight ago after being scratched at the gates on February 3.

Celerity was still very fresh in that diabetic appearance, where she was tardy away and green at the back of the field, but she balanced up and hit the line strongly.

That followed an impressive trial at Warwick farm and with natural improvement to come at start two, she can give this a shake with a few more favours in the run.

Value: 3. Embassy. Rosehill should suit Embassy more given he is an on-pacer and with improved efforts via his summer workouts, it was no surprise to see him run well on debut.

He couldn't hold off the late challenge of Castanya, who was having her second start and that winner arrived there of a second behind Switzerland, who is is one of the Golden Slipper favs.

The Team Snowden colt should have no trouble landing on the speed from barrier four under J-Mac and if there's improvement to come, then he should give a sight.

Race 5 - 2:50PM Parramatta Cup Tips (1900m)

Best: 6. Diamil. He's in his right grade at Group 3/Listed level and off an eye-catching resumption behind a flying all-the-way winner, Diamil looks superbly placed here second-up.

J-Mac was aboard for his last victory back in April 2023 in what was a stronger affair at Randwick and the champion hoop reunites with the John O'Shea-trained galloper.

Along with stepping up to his pet distance range, the six-year-old will also get conditions to suit underfoot, as he's always been more effective on wet ground and this is an ideal race for him.
Value: 17. Floating. They were excuses last start, where the grey covered plenty of ground at Randwick and coming back to 1600m there, it wasn't the right placement.

Floating had saluted in a BM88 the start prior over 10 furlongs and as this prep has worn on, keeping him over this distance range appears to be the key.

This class is a query now at Listed level, but he has a fitness edge over many key rivals and for a galloper who is going very well, he should be included a double figure quote.

Race 6 - 3:25PM Yarraman Park Handicap Tips (1400m)

Best: 7. Thalassophile. This Chris Waller-trained has decent fresh stats, however, it was a slower build up last spring, having resumed over six furlongs.

Thalassophile was set to peak in Melbourne, but nothing went right when she was ready to go and that was evident third-up at The Valley when unlucky behind Wishlor Lass.

She was only narrowly beaten by Revolutionary Miss before a spell and that form has held up well, while at seven furlongs for this return, she does look forward enough going off her trials.

Value: 5. Welwal. He was unlucky on Australian debut when contesting the 2022 Golden Eagle and Welwal was spelled after that spring outing before returning last February.

The son of Shalaa got stronger as that last campaign wore on, which culminated with a hat-trick of seconds and the form through those races reads well enough for this.

He's been given time following a sole spring flop and with a wet track suiting the import, he could easily run a race here fresh, arriving off a nice jump-out win at Flemington.

Race 7 - 4:00PM Kia Millie Fox Stakes Tips (1300m)

Best: 6. Lady Laguna. J-Mac jumping off is a little bewildering, although with ties to the Chris Waller stable, perhaps he was already committed to Zougotcha for this assignment.

Lady Laguna is deep into her campaign now, having completed four runs, but she's certainly a mare in form and a return to wet ground is a positive if anything.

Not only did she have the tactical speed last start, but she also had the turn-of-foot to outsprint Hard To Say over 1200m, while that fitness and brilliance could be the difference here.

Value: 5. Argentia. She's nearly impossible to catch, but Argentia is very talented and I wouldn't be shocked if she wins a really nice race for Joe Pride at some stage.

Fresh has often been the time to catch the daughter of Frankel, as two of us three wins have come first-up and she's versatile enough when it comes to handling track conditions.

She was perhaps written too warm over the initial stages for the new stable early last prep and the intent has been colder via her recent lead-up work.

Race 8 - 4:35PM Precise Air Hobartville Stakes Tips (1400m)

Best: 5. Ducasse. Despite being competitive at Group level as a two and early three-year-old, Ducasse was still a maiden leading into this prep, so he got a kill out of the way first-up.

A confidence booster and added fitness helps, while the son of Dundeel proved that he was up this class multiple times last season, where he was unlucky on multiple occasions.

He arguably should have beaten Tom Kitten and Co at Group 3 level here in August, where he was badly held up at key stages, while he then drew out in the Ming Dynasty.

Value: 11. Fukubana. This is well worth a shot at the stumps for this Matthew Dunn-trained colt, arriving to this Group 2 third-up following a soft last start victory.

He's already been on the road with Fukubana, who just missed in a 1200m affair here last winter and the track won't worry him, as his two career wins have come on soft ground.

The J-Mac engagement catches the eye and as one of the few here who could be peaking over 1400m compared to others who are still building, he has to be a chance.

Race 9 - 5:15PM Chandon Handicap Tips (1100m)

Best: 13. Our Bellagio Miss. It is an open affair, however, Our Bellagio Miss looks aa crazy price coming out of what looks to be the key form reference a fortnight ago.

The seven-year-old was specked a big price in that February 10 event, where she was eased back from a wide draw before getting home strongly with the fastest last 200m of the meeting.

She was supported fresh despite having no winning first-up form and along having stronger second-up stats, the mare also draws kinder and gets conditions to suit.
Value: 8. Libertad. A lightly raced three-year-old, Libertad could be the forgotten horse here, a colt who won a Group 3 over this track/trip when returning last August.

While wasn't able to progress from that San Domenico triumph, he has been given time ahead of this campaign and he should be forward enough off two trials.

The obvious knock is a wide alley and the map which comes with that, but he is versatile, while keeping him fresh and over these shorter sprints could be the key.

Race 10 - 5:55PM Kia Ora Stud Handicap Tips (1300m)

Best: 19. Gently Rolled. She was always going to improve off a solid return run and that proved correct with Gently Rolled taking the necessary progression to salute second-up at Randwick.

The Bryce Heys-trained mare carries a similar impost given it's technically a rise in grade, however, with the market also warming a little towards Dakota Vroom, this isn't much harder.

While that rival could turn the tables, as she was unlucky last start, Dakota Vroom draws out again and from a good alley, Gently Rolled is still on an upwards spiral.

Value: 1. French Bonnet. Despite having no winning first-up form and having resumed following a short and failed autumn prep last year, she was still specked fresh at a big price.

That late market move came off the back of two strong trial wins and while French Bonnet struggled when the sprint went on, she did find a second wind late in the piece.

Her last five wins have come in the 1400m-1600m range, so she should improve off whatever is delivered here, but her second-up record is very good.
