Race 1 - 12:20PM Midway Handicap Tips (1200m)
Selections: 3,12,7,8.
Ex-Victorian 3. SHOTMAKER was competitive in his first prep for Nathan Doyle, who has a great record with these tried horses. Has run well fresh in the past and simply didn't handle a Heavy 8 first-up in Sept when in the market via a stronger race. His Feb 16 trial was a little sharper than his lead-up work ahead of last spring.
12. Border Control won his first two starts for Adam Duggan before getting back in a leader dominated affair third-up and was strong late behind a progressive Headwall on March 1. The main query is 1200m.
7. Prince Invincible was terrific in the Feb 25 Midway, where he stuck on despite covering ground. Strips fitter third-up, but does draw out again.
8. Miss Einstein is back off a long spell (two quiet trials for the new yard). Class horse of the race if right.
Race 2 - 12:55PM Darley Pago Pago Stakes Tips (1200m)
Selections: 2,11,7,4.
With better racing manners, 2. MAHARBA goes close on debut in the Golden Gift. Switched to Grahame Begg yard, this gelding backed-up a nice jump-out to win the Talindert at Flemington as a well backed fav and that form is stacking up nicely, with second, third and fourth from that Feb 18 sprint all winning their next starts.
11. Gustosisimo is the pick of first starters, with two trial wins after showing tactical speed each time. He holds a Sires' nom and is bred to get further, although after the fav, there's nothing jumping off the page here.
7. Introducing beat Platinum Jubilee in a trial prior to a workmanlike debut win. Needs to improve off that and he may, now on firmer ground.
8. Godzilla rattled home on debut at Group 3 level before a spell. He looks on a Sires'/Champagne path.
Race 3 - 1:30PM Cerrone Handicap Tips (1350m)
Selections: 6,2,4,5.
6. ATTRACTABLE is an interesting recruit for young trainer Sara Ryan, a four-year-old that was building a decent record in Victoria and off his two Feb trials, he does look forward. Resuming at 1350m is a plus for a versatile galloper that gets a mile and his last prep form around Royal Mile, Pounding and I Am Bene reads quite well.
After being costly for punters for close to 18 months, 2. Tamerlane rounded out his spring with back-to-back wins and his two trials ahead of this return have been excellent. Will he get across from a wide draw?
The resuming 4. Finepoint is a leading chance, a consistent Waller mare that's resuming. She hasn't beaten much in her prior wins, though.
5. Dynamic Impact is in great touch and has a fitness edge. He's also accepted for Kembla on Friday.
Race 4 - 2:05PM Tresemme Magic Night Stakes Tips (1200m)
Selections: 6,7,11,16.
Would 6. STEEL CITY have won the Blue Diamond with clean air? Impossible to say, but with this in mind, she at least didn't spend any petrol tickets in that Group 1, so it was practically a non-event. She had Red Resistance and Learning To Fly form, with the blinkers applied after not quite finishing off vs those Slipper contenders.
7. Tu Qui Santuzza was very brave in her Canterbury debut win, as she was taken from the outset and although entitled to be vulnerable late, this filly opened up a space on those with the perfect drop.
11. Pretty Ohio is huge odds ($101.00 @
bet365), having being spelled after a debut flop, but with a colder ride, she looked a different filly in her recent workout.
16. Tiz Invincible showed huge improvement in her second trial. She's out of a half-sister to Anamoe.
Race 5 - 2:40PM City Tattersalls Maurice Mccarten Stakes Tips (1100m)
Selections: 2,5,7,9.
Godolphin sprinter 2. ATHELRIC interestingly has no first-up wins, despite a decent overall record, although was runner-up on return to Eduardo via an on-pace bias track in spring. That was a disappointing prep for the four-year-old, but he responded late and finished it with a win. His trials have been strong and this looks winnable.
We'll know the ceiling of 5. Clemenceau soon, a consistent, but overrated gelding (to date) that got handed an absolute gift on Nov 1 with no weight. Trials have just been okay, so the betting will be interesting.
7. Quick Tempo will always need luck with his racing pattern, but he's holding his form, with the only flop being two back when ridden too warm.
9. Cannonball was scratched last week and now gets in on the 53kg minimum. He maps for a soft run.
Race 6 - 3:20PM Chandon Phar Lap Stakes Tips (1500m)
Selections: 7,4,1.8.
A wide gate in the Coolmore Classic and gate four here is the reason 7. ZOUGOTCHA dodged that Group 1 and given she resumed off a little setback in the Surround, it makes sense to not give her a gut buster now with so many autumn options ahead. Fitness just gave out late over 1400m fresh and she'll strip a lot fitter from that.
Against Zougotcha, this doesn't look a winning set-up for
4. Awesome John, although he's in the top three/four mix at a price ($26.00 @
betfair). A progressive middle distance/staying type, he was terrific first-up with zero favours.
Fitness got 1. Glint Of Silver home in the Autumn Stakes, although outside of the fav, this isn't any stronger. He won a tick-over trial on March 2.
Thousand Guineas winner 8. Madame Pommery put in a flat one second-up, but her return was encouraging.
Race 7 - 4:00PM Furphy Sky High Stakes Tips (2000m)
Selections: 15,14,16,1.
Defaulting with 15. KING FRANKEL in a race that could throw up anything, with this Mark Newnham import at least a reliable stayer, having won four of five in Aus. Versus a hard fit and in-form Banju, he needed every bit of the 1900m first-up and he got the job done there late as a well backed fav. He'll land on the speed again.
After an ordinary spring, the market overlooked 14. Zeyrek fresh and while he got the saloon passage. it was still a very soft win on the line, with second and third then franking that form in the Newcastle Stakes.
J-Mac and William Haggas combine with 16. Protagonist, a European that placed behind Algiers last start and he'll be seen in the Dubai World Cup.
1. Explosive Jack is ticking over well and 2000m is ideal third-up. He's also accepted for the Canberra Cup.
Race 8 - 4:40PM Coolmore Classic Tips (1500m)
Selections: 9,3,10,13.
While she had to settle for a narrow second in the Surround Stakes, 9. RUTHLESS DAME lost no admirers, with the three-year-old picking up late despite a wide journey. In just her second campaign, she was only second-up there at start four overall following a 10-month absence, so there's a stack of upside with this three-year-old.
The penny dropped with 3. Hope In Your Heart last spring, recording a winning hat-trick and then should've gone closer in a strong Golden Eagle performance. Her class prevailed fresh and she can improve again.
10. Sheeza Belter ran the second fastest last 600m and 200m of the Surround. Ideally from midfield third-up, the JJ Atkins winner is set to peak here.
13. Yearning had excuses behind Hope In Your Heart fresh, although that's been mostly the tale of her career.
Race 9 - 5:20PM Hyland Race Colours Ajax Stakes Tips (1500m)
Selections: 12,8,1,4.
Forgiving one bad run from 12. WATERFORD, who appeared Waller's leading Doncaster hope ahead of his 2023 return and given what was expected on Feb 11, that return was a shocker. The four-year-old has trialled again and the sprint home over 1300m fresh clearly didn't suit him. This is a weak Group 2 and he needs to respond.
8. Cepheus has been airborne in Brisbane, with the OTI import attacking the line strongly over shorter trips both first and second-up. He has some NSW form from his first Aus prep and the 1500m is ideal here.
1. Bandersnatch is a tricky one to place with his rating, as this class is about his ceiling, although he continues to put in and the return was honest.
4. Sibaaq also comes from a Liverpool Cup resumption. Racing consistently, but continually a bridesmaid.
Race 10 - 5:55PM TAB Handicap Tips (1900m)
Selections: 3,1,9,7.
As far as 1900m BM78's go, this is a strong one. At big odds, I could entertain 3. CABOCHE, who is one of three in this line-up dropping in grade from a Feb 25 BM88 and this Waller four-year-old didn't get much room at key stages in the straight via that second-up attempt. Is fitter third-up and gets relief with the 2kg Zac Lloyd claim.
1. Almania arrives from the same Randwick event, where he was honest once again. He's been thereabouts in stronger company all campaign and this drop in grade is what he's been searching for. Deserves a win.
After a brave fresh win, 9. Major Beel went back-to-back on Feb 22. Just found him and Stroke Of Luck hard to split here off that Warwick Farm clash.
7. Wineglass Bay could go on with it here without surprising, but is a false fav coming out of a poor race.
