Race 1 - 12:20PM TAB Highway Handicap Tips (1400m)
Selections: 5,15,12,4.
5. EVOCATOR interestingly backs-up from a Country Qualifier last Sunday, where he was buried away towards the rear as a $5 hope, before getting clear late. Second-up over this track/trip, he again found plenty of traffic and with inside gates being an issue, a middle draw in this big field should be more suitable. Has had a spaced-out prep, returning with a brilliant Taree win in Dec.
15. Syrian Star won two of her first three in her early three-year-old prep and rounded out that prep with a fourth over this track/trip. Good fresh and although plain at Canterbury, back to Highway level is a tick.
12. Atmospheric Rock is a progressive three-year-old, who was beaten half a length at this level in just his fourth start. Draws for a softer run first-up.
4. Preemptory was very unlucky fresh, where he was badly held-up on the inside at Randwick. Draws out here, though.
Race 2 - 12:55PM Midway Handicap Tips (1500m)
Selections: 6,8,2,1.
After not coming up last winter, 6. NEW REPUBLIC was run off his feet first-up and staying at 1200m second-up, we saw a much-improved effort with the blinkers going on and the step to 1500m is a positive (his last two wins were at 1400m). Like the engagement of Brett Prebble, who will need to use gate three early and have him closer. Carries 5kg less third-up and is in the mix.
8. Miracle Spin could be the best horse to come from this, so the first-up quote ($10.00 @
Neds) is generous. While he won over 1880m in Oct, his two 1400m runs have been strong (beat dual city winner Woolombi in the last of those).
Coming back to Midway level from a strong midweek affair, 2. True Crime is well placed here fourth-up. Makes his own luck, but might need it wetter.
Nathan Doyle has turned around 1. Cheerful Legend, who will come into this late if they can make ground out wide.
Race 3 - 1:30PM ACY Securities Handicap Tips (1100m)
Selections: 11,6,3,9.
Going with three-year-old brigade and with the benefit of a low draw, along with race fitness, 11. INSURRECTION gets the nod. He wasn't able to progress last spring despite some handy form and returning as a gelding, he was backed as if unbeatable first-up on Feb 3, where he bolted in on the Kensington circuit in slick time. More depth here, but drops 3kg second-up.
11. Economics was a dominant listed winner first-up last prep over a handy Opal Ridge, before a sixth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes. The Jan 30 trial was good, but gate 10 is a query with speed to his inside.
After rounding out her first prep with a midfield finish at listed level, Godolphin filly 15. Parisal destroyed them on return. That Feb 3 maiden rated well.
9. Party For One struggles to win, but has a big finish and there's good speed here. She's the pick of the blowouts ($21.00 @
BoomBet).
Race 4 - 2:05PM Fujitsu General Silver Slipper Stakes Tips (1100m)
Selections: 3,8,6,7.
Fascinating affair and one that will shape Golden Slipper markets, especially if 3. KING'S GAMBIT bounces back, with the Snowden colt a dominant slipper fav after a debut romp and soft trial win, which reportedly left him underdone when losing to Red Resistance. While Capitalist had more runs on the board, his upset Todman loss (and then slipper win) had a similar feel.
If there's slight improvement this prep from Gimcrack winner 8. Platinum Jubilee, then she's right in Slipper contention. Outside of Skirt The Law, she produced the run of the Magic Millions and is tactically versatile.
6. Madeira Sunrise showed professionalism with a Lonhro Plate win on debut, although this is much deeper, so she'll need to find more at start two.
7. Mumbai Rose brings Learning to Fly (slipper fav) from her debut, where she made ground, although was well held.
Race 5 - 2:40PM Quayclean Handicap Tips (1400m)
Selections: 1,3,12,2.
While suited back in grade on Jan 28, 1. SUPER PURSUIT was giving 4kg to Think It Over, who looks stakes class, and he franked that form in a strong BM88 last Sat. After being dragged back in a muddling affair that suited the on-pace runners, this gelding peeled off the second fastest last 600m of the meeting (33.05). His form all prep has been strong and he gets another chance.
3. Willinga Rufio seems a one-dimensional free-rolling type that needs to be left alone, although he's still lightly raced and if there's any on-pace bias, that will play to his strengths. Will he be sharp enough at 1400m?
12. Kokoro was a first-up BM72 winner at the midweeks and I suspect that race will produce winners, while this isn't a vintage BM78. Stays at 1400m.
2. Saint Bathans won two in Vic last prep, including a BM80 and was competitive at listed level. Has good fresh stats.
Race 6 - 3:20PM Rosehill Bowling Club Millie Fox Stakes Tips (1300m)
Selections: 7,2,6,1.
With a good first-up record and Godolphin still searching for a black-type win for a galloper that's placed three-times at stakes level, expect them to have 7. KATALIN ready to go here against her own sex. She was unlucky not to get a listed win at Wyong over spring, where she covered ground from a wide draw and was nabbed on the line. We're at least getting an each-way quote.
Given 2. Mariamia has a fitness edge over classy rivals and is in career best form, she's the one to beat, but $2 is way too short. Golden Mile was underdone in the Expressway, which may have flattered that end margin.
At her best, I'd comfortably take 6. Roots over any of these, but her trials were ordinary. Interesting to see what the betting does late with her.
1. Electric Girl is generally thereabouts in these mares' races and she'll get her preferred good surface on return.
Race 7 - 4:00PM Parramatta Cup Tips (1900m)
Selections: 10,8,11,5.
If there's improvement to come in his second Australian campaign, which is often the case with these European imports, then 10. KING FRANKEL has found a lovely race here fresh, down on the 53kg minimum vs rivals who are mostly at their ceiling. He won three of four starts over spring, handling both heavy and good ground, while the two summer lead-up trials were both encouraging.
8. Mohican Heights returns to Sydney, having started the prep in Brisbane and although was big odds second-up, it was quite a soft win at Eagle Farm, where he settled handy and sprinted hard. Carries 5kg less here.
It took time to get 11. Irish Legend to his pet trip (2000m) and he cashed in once there, recording back-to-back wins. Is hard fit and down in the weights.
5. Banju continues to answer every challenge, but now has to run out a strong 1900m after peaking at 1500m-1600m.
Race 8 - 4:40PM Petaluma Hobartville Stakes Tips (1400m)
Selections: 4,3,12,5.
While 4. OSIPENKO is a better chance of turning the tables on Aft Cabin over 1600m in the Randwick Guineas, I'm expecting improvement at 1400m second-up and on each-way/1x3 basis vs a $1.60 fav, this Waller colt is the bet here. A galloper that could've won a Caulfield Guineas from a better gate, there was no intent fresh and from barrier one here, Nash should be settling him closer.
Although I have a few question marks on 3. Aft Cabin when they get to 1600m, he's your likely winner here off his dominant 1200m first-up performance against a similar lot. Gate 11 at Rosehill presents a challenge.
Is 12. Magic the forgotten horse here? The Team Hawkes three-year-old returns a gelding and they could've placed him much softer with a low rating.
Suspect 5. Zou Tiger looks for the early lead this time. Those tactics and a track bias are his only hope against the fav.
Race 9 - 5:20PM Chandon Handicap Tips (1400m)
Selections: 1,4,3,5.
The only query with 1. CROSS TALK here is a likely good surface, albeit he's still performed well on this ground without winning and with an ideal set-up otherwise, he's hard to oppose. Despite a big freshen-up ahead of a short spring, after four winter runs on testing ground, he needed a good spell after the Rowley Mile. He's unbeaten first-up and Clark should dictate from the front.
Godolphin gelding 4. Character has always been a little underrated, with the four-year-old unsuited for most of last prep on wet tracks. At 1400m-1600m on firm ground, he's always a threat with his slick turn-of-foot.
3. Welwal made his Australian debut in the Golden Eagle, where he was lucky to stay on his feet after some heavy interference. Big watch on him here.
5. Lackeen doesn't win out of turn, but he's generally thereabouts and will do no work in the run from the inside.
Race 10 - 5:55PM Cleanaway Handicap Tips (1100m)
Selections: 5,3,6,11.
Track pattern crucial, because if it's even, then I'd rather speck a few of the classy first-up horses, with 5. KISS SUM at the top of that list, a Group 3 winner who had a short spring prep and was mostly in the deep end. While it was in weaker company as a younger horse, he's been effective over these short trips and Collett is back on, who has been aboard for his last three victories.
3. Flying Crazy is another returning four-year-old at big odds ($27.00 @
Ladbrokes), with this gelding a three-time listed winner last season. Was spelled after a short and failed spring prep, but that was off the back of an already big year.
6. Midwest has run into handy sprinters over a spaced-out prep and could cash in over 1100m from the front. The money will come if there's on-pace bias.
11. Kote was a little plain on return, although he had no prior first-up, or 1000m form, so he can improve second-up.
