Randwick Tips August 19

Race 1 - 11:35AM Midway Handicap Tips (1200m)

Best: 3. Backrower. A galloper with Group form around performances as a two and three-year-old, Backrower does look superbly placed first-up at Midway level, returning here as gelding.

After a stylish debut win over this trip at Newcastle, he placed behind Osipenko (Group 2 winner) and Madame Pommery, with the latter winning the Group 1 Thousand Guineas.

The son of Astern has trialled up twice (won the latest), although he draws wide and also holds a nomination for Wednesday.

Backrower - $5.00Randwick Race Onebet now
New customers only. 18+ T&Cs and wagering requirements apply.

Value: 9. Eyeque. He showed improvement in his second prep, winning two of his first four outings over summer and was tipped out after a Warwick Farm defeat in March.

After being eased back from a wide draw, Eyeque was hard to miss via his July 29 return, with the four-year-old sneaking up the rails and doing his best work late over 1100m.

This is a little easier and along with an extra 100m suiting here second-up, he can settle closer from barrier four.

Race 2 - 12:10PM TAB Highway Handicap Tips (1100m)

Best: 6. Manzoni. This ex-Godolphin galloper is proving a savvy buy for new connections, having won his first two starts for the Natalie Jarvis stable in autumn before a spell.

With a kinder draw, he would've made it 3/3 when returning at Forbes, with the gelding sustaining a wide and long run from the rear to only just miss over the 1100m.

That was an average race, hence his price in a competitive Highway, but he's done nothing wrong and jumps from gate one here.

Manzoni - $17.00Randwick Race Twobet now

Value: 8. Airliner. I've always had some time for Airliner, a son of Starcraft that started to put it together over 1400m deep into his second campaign last year.

He's been off the scene since a midfield finish via the Rosehill Highway on September 24 last year and while he'll improve from this, he could be dangerous late off a strong speed.

The lead-up trial was fine and from the Terry Robinson yard, who always has to be respected in these Highways, he could be the blowout.

Race 3 - 12:45PM Gold Coast Turf Club Trophy Tips (2400m)

Best: 2. Martial Eagle. Especially given the quality that's taking part later in this program, this 2400m BM78 isn't the most appealing race on the first Group 1 card of the season.

There still needs to be a winner, though and while it's quite an open affair, this is nice placement by Pakenham trainer Charlotte Littlefield, who heads north with Martial Eagle.

He's crying out for the 2400m fourth-up and after missing the start last time, he got home well behind Shaiyhar, which is good enough for this.

Value: 6. Olympic Theatre. After landing good bets first-up over the Hawkesbury mile, the six-year-old has been more dour over the 1900m and 2200m trips that followed.

Now he's deeper into the prep and with a staying journey under the belt, Olympic Theatre has the platform to spike again, while he won twice over similar trips in Europe.

To the eye, he's struggled to pick up with big weights in his last two, so a 4.5kg drop comes as a big relief.

Olympic Theatre - $21.00Randwick Race Threebet now
18+ only. Don't let the game play you. Stay in control. Gamble responsibly.

Race 4 - 1:20PM Toyota Forklifts Handicap Tips (1600m)

Best: 4. Kingsheir. He'll be okay if we get an upgrade or two, as while he gets through soft ground okay, this big and strong gelding from the Kim Waugh yard doesn't like heavy tracks.

While he disappointed last time in, his two winter performances suggest he's back on track, recording the fastest last 600m of his latest event when stepping up to 1500m.

This is no stronger than what he faced last start and now he finally draws well, he gets his chance third-up, with Nash Rawiller taking the reins.

Kingsheir - $17.00Randwick Race Fourbet now

Value: 1. Casino Kid. He'd been so genuine before this campaign and was competitive in stronger company than this only last prep, which was evident with a BM88 placing at Randwick.

While Casino Kid hasn't fired a shot for Joe Pride, it was an improved showing last start and although blinkers going on is always noteworthy, it's a bigger factor with this yard.

Suited back to the mile and with a decent record at Randwick, I'm not surprised that the 30/1 was taken early.

Race 5 - 1:55PM Mostyncopper Show County Quality Tips (1200m)

Best: 10. Extremely Lucky. An ex-Will Clarken galloper that's now under the care of Chris Waller, Extremely Lucky was scratched from an easier BM88 assignment last Saturday.

A clear scope this week has him ready to go now and while this a tougher ask at Group 3 level, he's potentially a Group 1 sprinter and he's down the 53kg minimum for this.

Given he settles off the speed, Randwick will be more suitable than Rosehill and with a low weight fresh in this small field, his turn-of-foot could be lethal.

Value: 6. Argentia. While there were excuses for many of the beaten brigade in the Missile Stakes, I felt Argentia's performance had the most merit in that Group 2.

Making her stable debut for Joe Pride in that August 5 feature, the superbly bred mare managed to pick up again despite being inconvenienced by tragic breakdown of Big Parade.

Keeping her to these sprint trips is a positive for now and while she'll likely spot them a start due to the draw, she can launch late.

Race 6 - 2:30PM James Squire Premier's Cup Tips (2000m)

Best: 14. Fawkner Park. While his unbeaten streak for Annabel Neasham ended last start, the talented import lost no admirers with that runner-up finish behind Bold Mac.

That winner franked the form with a Rowley Mile victory on Thursday and while Bold Mac deserved his Rosehill triumph, the Waller runner did have all favours there.

On the other hand, Fawkner Park came from back, wide and against the pattern, with the switch to Randwick and step to 2000m both positives here.

Value: 3. Gear Up. A stablemate to the fav, Gear Up showed enough in his first prep Down Under, which included a Group 3 placing over this trip on his Australian debut.

Spelled after a Mornington Cup flop, the son of Teofilo is expected to have come on now in his second Australian prep, which is often the case with these Europeans.

A three-time Group winner in Europe, including a Group 1 victory on heavy ground over this distance, he should be respected fresh.

Race 7 - 3:05PM Laurel Oak Toy Show Quality Tips (1100m)

Best: 8. Queen Of The Ball. With 5.5kg off Zougotcha and Parisal drawing out, Queen Of The Ball is the best suited of the three market elects, with this mare jumping from an inside draw.

The Michael Freedman galloper has impressed in both winter lead-up's, with her first heat resulting in a second to Alligator Blood and in her latest, she held off a champion (Nature Strip).

All three of her wins have come at Group level and while two of those were on soft ground, her biggest defeat (Golden Slipper) was on a heavy track.

Queen Of The Ball - $4.60Randwick Race Sevenbet now
New customers only. 18+ T&Cs and wagering requirements apply.

Value: 2. How's the Serenity. An interesting runner is this ex-Western Australian, who is now under the care of Team Hawkes and she showed improvement in her second trial.

She built up a tidy record in the west, winning nine from 23 overall and after working through the lower grades, How's the Serenity handled the rise to Listed level in January.

In terms of out-and-out quality sprinters, this isn't the deepest race and for a tough on-pacer against her own sex, she can give a sight.

How's the Serenity - $26.00Randwick Race Sevenbet now
18+ only. Don't let the game play you. Stay in control. Gamble responsibly.

Race 8 - 3:45PM Winx Stakes Tips (1400m)

Best: 13. Fangirl. She ran into Anamoe five times last season and that included a second behind the champion in the 2022 Winx Stakes, where she started a well-respected second fav.

Two lead-up trials, an exhibition gallop and the James McDonald engagement suggest she's Chris Waller's number-one seed for the Winx Stakes, but a few track upgrades are needed.

If the track creeps back into the soft range, which seems likely, then Fangirl can notch up her second Group 1 win via the first major of the season.

Fangirl - $5.50Randwick Race Eightbet now
18+ only. T&Cs apply. Stay in Control. Gamble Responsibly. Think! About your choices. Call Gambling Help on 1800 858 858 or visit www.gamblinghelponline.org.au.

Value: 7. Golden Mile. Ahead of the Missile Stakes, I didn't think he could out-sprint I Am Me at that trip even if he was shot out of a cannon, yet he was travelling well in the box-seat.

Having him ready early is likely by design from James Cummings, with the 2022 Caulfield Guineas winner unlikely to get many decent looks deeper in spring at WFA level.

With a soft map and other races ahead for many the more talented contenders in this Group 1 feature, he could pinch it second-up.

Race 9 - 4:20PM Darley Silver Shadow Stakes Tips (1200m)

Best: 2. Kristilli. Deep race and this group will split up, with some sticking to the sprinting caper, whereas it's a Flight Stakes starting point for at least a handful of these fillies.

While Kristilli will likely be aimed at the mile Group 1 at the end of September, she had the brilliance to salute over this track/trip in autumn via the Percy Sykes before a spell.

She beat the subsequent Rosebud winner (Tiz Invincible) in that April 8 display and James McDonald's engagement off a Canterbury trial is noteworthy.

Value: 15. Mumbai Muse. Although she was well held in third, I liked the Widden Stakes debut from this daughter of Zoustar, who made ground to finish third over 1100m.

Versus Learning To Fly and Steel City, that trip was too slick, so resuming at 1200m on the bigger surrounds of Randwick is a tick, while she beat a handy Cigar Flick in that debut.

Forgive the Silver Slipper flop, as Mumbai Muse pulled up lame and she had a solid hit-out to win her second winter trial, so there's intent first-up.

Race 10 - 4:55PM ACY Securities Handicap Tips (1200m)

Best: 3. Pacific Ruby. The Maher & Eustace yard has freshened up Pacific Ruby, with the five-year-old putting in a flat one when contesting the Leilani Final on July 1.

She was a winning machine before that, recording five on the trot and that includes a BM84 triumph over Barbie's Fox, who was a Listed winner at Rosehill last month.

I suspect she finds her ceiling soon enough, but as a proven weight carrier that's won at a higher level, a BM78 is well within reach for her.

Value: 11. Byron Belle. While she was competitive over 2000m via the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes, I'm not convinced that Byron Belle stays and her Oaks failure shows that.

Now there's no need to throw at the stumps, given she's a four-year-old with a rating of 70 and she will be more effective if kept around the 1200m-1600m range.

Her two best runs have come first-up on soft tracks, which includes a maiden win, while the other was a second to Wollombi (subsequent Group winner).
