Perth Cup 2021 Tips

Perth Cup 2021 Best Bet - Truly Great

Securing his first major win in the Group Three R.J. Peters Stakes on November 14 is this gelding in famous and white of Bob Peters who following a seventh-place finish in the Railway Stakes, upset his more favored stable mate to take out the Group One Kingston Town Classic.

A son of Dundeel and a half-brother to the 2018 WA Oaks winner Special Alert, Truly Great has risen with every challenge this campaign and is improving with every race day outing, winning the Van Heemst Stakes last start seemingly in second gear when pulling away late from Trap For Fools.

He has drawn out and it it's no easy to task to overcome that along with a 60kg impost, but simply, this five-year-old may just be a class above this field and with victory here over the 2400m, could be a genuine player later in 2021 over the Melbourne Spring Carnival (Caulfield Cup?).

Perth Cup 2021 Value Bet - Platoon

This very honest five-year-old can sneak under the guard a little and although he is a while between drinks, is one of the better weighted gallopers in the 2021 Perth Cup field with big weight swings on both Truly Great and Trap For Fools from the Van Heemst Stakes.

He kept taking that next step in 2019 with a Listed win in March and was one of the most competitive locals over the Perth Carnival later that year with the highlight being a third-place finish in the Group One Railway Stakes behind Regal Power and Best Of Days, so is certainly classy enough on his day.

Platoon has appeared more dour this time in and from both the Kingston Town Stakes along with that recent chasing effort when just off Trap For Fools (met him at equal weights), his form is that bit stronger overall than Neufbosc's, who is half his quote currently.

Perth Cup 2021 Roughie - Cambist

With just the two wins from 16 starts to date, the winning strike rate of this mare isn't great but apart from her three outings so far this campaign, the majority of her racing has been at stakes level since breaking her Maiden back in October 2019.

By Gingerbread Man and out of a Listed winning mare in Calico Blue who won up to 2200m, this now four-year-old has some excellent form lines from her last two three-year-old campaigns with the highlights being runner-up finishes behind Kay Cee (Group One winner) and Chantrea.

Cambist was projected to win third-up but was a little one-paced to the line over the 1800m (perhaps looking for this 2400m trip now) and although not as seasoned as most, outside the first four/five in the betting, she's as talented as anything else in this field and could finish top three or four without surprising.

Verdict

Even with the weight, it's hard to look past the classy Truly Great in the 2021 Perth Cup.

Platoon is the best weighted horse in the field and warrants respect at a double figure quote.
