Pakenham Tips February 29

John Duff & Co BM64 Handicap Tips (Race 1)

Pakenham Value Bet - Race 1 No. 5 Quebeck

The gelding attempted to overcome a wide barrier to make all the running when making his debut at Bendigo in July last year.

Ultimately, Quebeck found only two James Cummings-trained runners too good, with the winner that day Pantelone among those to register subsequent victories.

The three-year-old returned to the races in 2024 with a narrow margin success in a maiden held over 1200m at Moonee Valley just under two weeks ago.

He showed that quicker going was no issue on that occasion, recording a win on a Good 4 track when ridden close to the speed in a metro event.

Nathan Dunn’s gelding remains open to improvement, while connections apply winkers for the first time here with jockey Thomas Stockdale retaining the ride.

Pakenham Best Bet - Race 5 No. 3 Marble Arch

The New Zealand-bred mare has shown a liking for this venue in the past, winning three times over shorter distances around this time twelve months ago.

Marble Arch returned this prep with a highly respectable four-and-a-half-length seventh in the LIsted Black Pearl Stakes over 1200m at Geelong last month.

The four-year-old contested a sixteen-runner event that day, while she was beaten just over one-and-a-half-lengths when seventh at Caulfield subsequently.

She challenged wide, having been ridden from off the pace that day and she went on to record a second in a 1600m Benchmark 70 handicap at the same venue on February 10.

Ben, JD & Will Hayes’ representative did best of those racing from off the pace that day and dropping to country level racing, she is taken to go one better.

Pakenham Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 9 Barby’s Doll

Trainer Jerome Hunter is triple-handed in the Final of this series and his daughter of Fighting Sun looks the pick of his trio.

The filly caught the eye when shaping as if she was in need of the experience before finishing runner-up at Geelong when debuting in December.

Barby's Doll raced on a Good 4 surface that day, but proved that softer conditions were no issue for her when saluting by over one-and-a-half-lengths in Heat 2 of this series.

The three-year-old had stablemate Miss Cardannic back in second when racing over this track/trip that day, with another of her rivals here MIslead back in third.

Mislead went on to take Heat 8 in the series, while Barby's Doll had her only subsequent start when placing third in a 1200m Benchmark 70 at Caulfield on February 3.

Pakenham Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 2 North Channel

The four-year-old demonstrated good form in 2023, winning twice after having finished runner-up in his first two starts, including on the synthetic track here on debut.

The second of those victories saw the gelding come home two lengths clear of his rivals in a 1600m Benchmark 64 handicap at Swan Hill in September.

North Channel ended that prep with his first start at metro level, recording a two-and-a-half-length fourth when contesting a Benchmark 64 at Moonee Valley in October.

He had made all at Swan Hill, but was ridden with more restraint when returning lame in that Moonee Valley event.

A wide barrier shouldn’t pose too many issues to jockey Craig Williams, given his mount's versatility and the pair are taken to make amends for their recent narrow defeat.
