Northam Tips September 2

Northam Best Bet - Race 2 No. 1 Hoover

The trainer/jockey combination of Stephen Miller and Shaun McGruddy has been a profitable one for punters to follow over the last 12 months, having recorded seven winners together from 37 starters with an ROI of 16.6% overall in that period.

They team up in the second from Northam on Thursday with Hoover, a big and strapping son of All American that did show ability in his first campaign, which started over the 1100m on this circuit when working home into second behind Time Scale, a city class galloper.

Given plenty of time to mature and fill out into his large frame, the four-year-old has worked well in two lead-up trials, looked after in the last of those hit outs and in what doesn't look an overly strong Maiden, he's forward enough to breakthrough fresh.

Northam Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 3 Gold Friars

What's worth noting is that jockey Paul Harvey had trialled up and was on Madame Wu via her debut, one of the key threats here, a runner that was backed as if unbeatable ($2.50-$2.00) in that August 19 event where she fought back late, but had to settle for second.

Harvey hasn't stuck with that mare, however, with Gold Friars having accepted here, a four-year-old that couldn't have been braver first-up on that same Pinjarra meeting in 1200m Maiden that went nearly six lengths faster than Madam Wu's race.

The son of Blackfriars showed glimpses of potential early days and now over a more testing seven furlongs which should suit, he can land on the speed and providing the fresh run hasn't flattened him (was wide throughout), then this does look a winnable assignment.

Northam Value Bet - Race 6 No. 4 Holyoake

Over her 12-start career to date, Holyoake has somewhat exemplified much of the Brett Pope stable (hard to catch), however, her best has been very good and as only an early season four-year-old, she has time to put it together and work the grades.

Both wins from this mare have come second-up and each victory came off the back of only so-so return runs with this girl resuming at Belmont on August 18, which was just another fair fresh effort when making some small inroads from the rear over the 1400m.

Well backed when winning brilliantly at Ascot back in March, albeit it over a mile, the WA Oaks performance when rattling home for fifth the start following was equally as impressive, especially considering the very unconventional 1600m to 2400m placement.
