JAMES SQUIRE ONE FIFTY LASHES MAIDEN Tips (Race 2)
Northam Best Bet - Race 2 No. 4 Southstar
Admittedly this mare has had more chances than some of her key rivals in this Maiden, however, she hasn't hasn't had a great deal of luck at her last two outings and this assignment looks a shade easier than those recent events.
Following a nice first-up effort at Northam, Southstar competed over the same track and trip on July 25, where a wide gate proved costly, although she made late ground for fourth (second and third from that race subsequent winners).
The four-year-old was three-wide the trip at Kalgoorlie via her most recent run, where she stuck on well considering and in what could well be a tactical battle in this small field, she may well just be the one with a turn-of-foot when it counts.
IRON JACK CRISP AUSTRALIAN LAGER HANDICAP Tips (Race 5)
Northam Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 4 Fish Hook
This mare has more ability than her record suggests, having won a handy Maiden on this circuit last Spring, a race that has produced five subsequent winners including Billy Ray, a dual winner that saluted at Saturday level back in May.
Although she hasn't won since then, Fish Hook has placed behind the likes of Triple Missile and Acromantula, two genuine city class gallopers and defeated home Secret Plan in of those events, who is a very progressive Bob Peters sprinter.
A speedy type that led and just felt the pinch late via her most recent outing on June 16, trainer Martin Allan has kept her on the fresh side and finding a very winnable race on Thursday, she should give a good sight on the speed.
JAMES SQUIRE GINGER BEER HANDICAP Tips (Race 7)
Northam Value Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Sun Chacen
After showing some promise early, albeit not delivering, this gelding managed to breakthrough at start 10 last December and is looking to follow a similar pattern here following a good return run on July 22 at Pinjarra.
Sun Chacen didn't exactly beat a field of walkers in that first victory either, with multiple winners coming out of that Bunbury contest including Graceful Girl who bolted in at Listed level in June, and she looks a smart type going forward.
The five-year-old won a seven-furlong Class 3 deeper into that campaign, so a testing 1300m second-up should suit off that eye-catching fresh performance and from barrier five here, he should tuck in for a nice trail off the speed.
