Irish Race Day at Morphettville - Saturday August 14 Handicap Tips (Race 2)
Morphettville Value Bet - Race 2 No. 7 Motell
This progressive type produced a good first-up performance behind the talented Great Diviner and was impressive again second-up, launching from an impossible rearward position at Murray Bridge on July 3
Motell finished second to subsequent Group Three winner Lord Vladivostock before being tipped out, so he clearly has his fair share of talent and with a very low rating, should be moving through the lower grades this winter.
While the Parks circuit isn't ideally where we wanted to see him compete, the step up to 1550m is a positive for this four-year-old and providing there's no savage leader-bias, he's just about the one to beat at what is a fair opening price.
36° South Beef Handicap Tips (Race 4)
Morphettville Value Bet - Race 4 No. 8 Lohn Ranger
In what was his fourth first-up attempt, it was a clear fresh peak for this gelding on June 26 when only edged out late by The Big Goodbye, a galloper that's rated above anything in this field and he was good without luck at Gawler last Saturday.
They were coming in at decent intervals behind Lohn Ranger, especially for a 1000m event with more than two lengths back to third and one and a half-length gaps for the next two runners home, which can only be seen as a positive for this five-year-old.
His prior two second-up outings have included a Maiden victory back in March last year and via his latest, he was three-wide the trip, but still stuck on well for third when working against the pattern of a muddling affair in November.
Furphy Handicap Tips (Race 8)
Morphettville Best Bet - Race 8 No. 5 Frankie Pinot
Arriving off a soft trial win at Ballarat, the son of Your Song did look likely to improve off whatever he did first-up on June 26, but as the runner with the most upside in that race, we specked him as out Value Bet and he duly saluted in a strong victory.
Barend Vorster pinched runs to get up late over a trip that is as short as he wants, and given there was no real push at 10/1 along with those tactics, I'd be surprised if there wasn't improvement to come with Frankie Pinot, a second-up winner last campaign.
While he's adept on any surface, this gelding has ploughed through the wet to be two from two on heavy tracks and over what will likely be a testing seven furlongs, he can thrive whereas a lot of his rivals could well be taken out of their comfort zone.
Weslo Security Handicap Tips (Race 9)
Morphettville Next Best Bet - Race 9 No. 2 Great Diviner
Eased right backed early from a wide draw in his May 22 return here despite jumping well, Great Diviner was just there to get back and hit the line first-up, which he did in restricted room against more seasoned rivals.
The knock was staying at 1000m off that great return and that's proven to be correct, but only just, with his turn-of-foot almost him there over Tanja's Dream on June 5, a filly that completed a winning hat-trick in the process.
He relished the extra furlong on June 19 when landing good bets for us despite getting home in the inferior ground, and although scratched from last Saturday (four weeks between runs now) against his own age at Benchmark 68 level, this looks more suitable.
