Mornington Favourite – Race 2 No. 7 Ortigian Girl
The daughter of I Am Invincible fetched $300,000 when led through the ring as a yearling at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in 2023.
The filly gained plenty of experience in jumpouts prior to making her official race debut including when finishing runner-up in a 750m event at Balnarring last month.
The pick went on to make her debut when contesting a 1000m maiden held on a good 3 track at Cranbourne ten days later.
The three-year-old tracked the speed when racing against colts and geldings that day prior to finishing just under a length second in a seven runner contest.
The selection is expected to have improved for that experience with the extra 200m here also likely to suit.
Anthony & Sam Freedman do well at this venue boasting a 33% strike-rate (7/21) here this season and their representative looks capable of helping them improve on that with a win.
Barmah Park Cellar Door & Restaurant Plate Tips (Race 4)
Mornington Next Best – Race 4 No. 10 Mary Eliza (SCRATCHED)
The daughter of Super Seth made a highly promising debut when contesting a 1300m maiden at Seymour last month.
The three-year-old raced behind the speed prior to being beaten just over two lengths in finishing third when racing on a good 4 track that day.
The pick jumped from barrier nine on that occasion with the winner, who had the benefit of race experience going on to acquit himself well in a metro event at Flemington on Wednesday.
While the filly had contested plenty of jumpout’s ahead of her debut she is expected to have improved for that Seymour experience.
The winner is out of a top class mare who’s wins included a win at the highest level in the 2400m Australian Oaks and with that in mind the extra distance here should suit.
Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman’s representative boasts a good barrier in three here and she is taken to break through to register her first win.
Catanach's Jewellers Handicap Tips (Race 6)
Mornington Best Bet – Race 6 No. 1 Genrichero
The New Zealand-bred gelding registered a string of good placed efforts earlier this prep including when third over 1600m in at the start of November.
The pick was beaten just over two lengths when contesting a Benchmark 64 handicap on a good 3 track that day and he has shown good form over further in recent starts.
Those recent starts include a fourth, beaten just over four lengths when competing in a 2000m Benchmark 64 handicap here last month.
The four-year-old appeared to appreciate the step up to 2200m when coming home nearly three lengths clear of her rivals in an eight-runner Benchmark 58 handicap at Sale subsequently.
The son of Proisir raced wide, without cover and from the front at Sale having been ridden with more restraint in his previous starts this prep.
The selection was partnered by highly promising apprentice Dakotah Keane last time and with Keane up once more the pair look capable of completing a double stepping up in distance.
Modtech Group Handicap Tips (Race 7)
Mornington Value Bet – Race 7 No. 11 Patriot Star
The three-year-old broke recorded placed efforts on her first two starts including when beaten a length on a soft 6 track at Echuca in July.
The selection broke through for her first victory when saluting by half-a-length in a maiden held over this distance on the synthetic track at Ballarat next time.
The daughter of Deep Field was given a short break following that effort and while only seventh dropped to 1000m on turf at Ballarat she was beaten less than two lengths that day.
Two fourth-place finishes followed that Ballarat start including when beaten three-and-a-half-lengths when racing on the Heath track at Caulfield in November.
The filly has been freshened since that Benchmark 64 handicap effort with the drop to country-level racing in her favour.
While a wide alley isn’t ideal Rose Hammond’s three-kilogram claim is a positive and she looks value to record a win racing off a low weight.
