Mornington Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 5 Master Right
Shannon Roughan’s representative has been in good form without winning of late finishing in the places in each of his last three starts.
Those efforts include a good second when beaten just under one-and-a-half-lengths on a heavy 10 track at Moe on his penultimate start.
The selection contested a Benchmark 58 handicap over this distance that day and was freshened following that effort.
The son of Denman returned to Moe for his latest effort when beaten just over two lengths into third in a 1628m Restricted 58 handicap on a soft 6 surface.
The pick raced from off the pace on that occasion with the form of that race working out well thanks to subsequent winners for the two horses ahead of him.
The gelding raced from off the pace on that occasion and stepping back up in distance and jumping from a wide barrier similar tactics are expected in this race.
While any softening of the going would be appreciated the six-year-old has performed well on a sound surface in the past.
Mercedes-Benz Mornington Handicap Tips (Race 7)
Mornington Roughie - Race 7 No. 5 Hollandia
The five-year-old demonstrated good form on a sound surface last prep including when beaten just over a length into fourth in a 2000m Restricted 64 handicap at Pakenham in February.
The pick raced on a good 3 track that day and followed it up with a third of seven in a 2200m Benchmark 58 handicap held on a good 4 surface at Ararat the following month.
The gelding was spelled following that effort and raced on synthetic surfaces in his first two starts this prep.
While he was beaten six-and-a-half-lengths when fifth over 2088m at Moe subsequently it’s of note that he raced on a wet turf surface for the first time in over a year that day.
The switch to a forecast good 4 turf track is a positive here while he has shaped as if a step up in distance would suit in the past.
The booking of Daniel Stackhouse takes the eye here and his mount may prove up to springing a surprise.
Big Event Picnic Tables Handicap Tips (Race 8)
Mornington Value Bet - Race 8 No. 2 Cinque Ponte
Tony Noonan’s filly failed to shine in her first two outings with both of those efforts coming at Sale.
The four-year-old demonstrated improvement when beaten just over four-and-a-half-lengths in finishing seventh in a 1200m event on the synthetic track at Pakenham in July.
The daughter of Toronado had been freshened prior to that effort and broke through for her first win when jumping at $19 for a maiden at Echuca last month.
The step up in distance appeared to suit on that occasion and she shaped as if the extra 100m she tackles here will suit.
The daughter of Toronado raced from mid-division at Echuca and connections are expected to employ similar tactics on her first start against previous winners.
The pick is less exposed than her rivals having made just four previous starts and the decision to skip a race at Geelong last weekend to head here looks a shrewd move.
An inside alley is a positive in this contest and with improvement expected she is taken to follow up under Jake Noonan.
The Big Screen Company Handicap Tips (Race 9)
Mornington Best Bet - Race 9 No. 2 Chinqui
The three-year-old demonstrated ability in jumpouts before making his racecourse debut including when successful over 800m on the synthetic track at Flemington in July.
The gelding showed up well when making his debut on a soft 7 track at Cranbourne losing out by a narrow margin when finishing runner-up in a 1000m maiden contest.
The pick again encountered a wet track when delivering his first victory when contesting a 1017m maiden on a soft 7 surface at Moe August 18.
Similar tactics were employed on that occasion with the form of that event having been boosted by the subsequent maiden win of the fifth home Phantom Prince.
Trained by Anthony & Sam Freedman races on a sound surface for the first time here but has a good jockey in Jamie Kah, on board last time out in the saddle.
An inside alley is a positive in this contest and the son of Harry Angel is selected to complete a double on his first start in a handicap.
