Mornington Tips April 22

Race 1 - 12:15PM Mornington Peninsula News Group Sires Tips (1200m)

Selections: 2,5,3,4.

Locals always have an advantage at Mornington and 2. ROVNO AMBER will debut on his home deck, a well-bred colt by Russian Revolution and out of a Group 1 winning sprinter in Precious Gem. His lead-up work has been sharp and that includes a 700m jump-out win here on April 12 in good time despite covering ground.

5. Neutralism was specked on debut in Nov at Cranbourne and should've finished a clear second to Remedies there, who is a useful Godolphin juvenile. Arrives off two jump-outs and straight to 1200m is a plus.

3. Chilled led throughout at Morphettville and held-off Stretan Angel, who bolted in with a listed race last Sat. Remedies was in that field.

4. Long Lost Friend was a two-length debut winner at Bendigo, but not convinced he beat much there.

Race 2 - 12:50PM Asset Painting Services Handicap Tips (1600m)

Selections: 5,3,9,2.

Shocking race and it's one that 5. THOUGHT PROVOKING can figure in fresh, with the daughter of So You Think here off three solid jump-outs. Was sharp enough to win a 1400m maiden first-up last year, while if you take out her heavy track attempts and her Group 2 placement over spring, then she's been very consistent.

Especially considering she was first-up, I felt there was more merit to the March 29 run of 3. Perfect World, as opposed to Defiant Diva (fav). She was shuffled back and held-up, before finding the line quite well.

9. Warm Smile has placed either side of a Feb 16 miss, where she was lame and the runner-up (Western Sun) has franked the from her last run.

2. Defiant Diva is honest and while this is very winnable for her, she's starting to get costly for punters.

Race 3 - 1:25PM IDS Security Handicap Tips (1000m)

Selections: 3,13,1,5.

This has to revolve around 3. RANVEER and the market will be fascinating late given he's first-up off an 18-month break. He was stakes class as a younger horse, with 1000m seemingly his right trip, so he wouldn't need to be at peak fitness here anyway. He's completed two autumn jump-outs and both were terrific.

First emergency 13. Fasuto is a key threat should he ge a start. Was aggressively placed twice after a start two romp in Dec and coming back to a BM64 on March 31, he cashed in. He has more upside than most.

1. El Salto won at huge odds on April 1, where he was up to a BM84 and is now back to a BM70. Is a proven weight carrier and has placed here.

Include local 5. Tax Free Prophet in the exotics. Is 3/3 at Mornington and his last prep form reads okay.

Race 4 - 2:00PM Cleanaway Sustainability Handicap Tips (2000m)

Selections: 7,3,9,2.

It was a terrific Aus debut from 7. CONVENER, who was backed ahead of that BM78 at Sandown, where he was forced to the inside vs a hard-fit Saint Bathans. Had he got the outside gap at the top of the straight, he arguably wins, albeit getting to 2000m was always going to suit more. With even luck, he can go one better.

3. Claidheamh Mor was a shade disappointing at Geelong given that pattern of that card, although he was giving plenty of weight to the quinella and he was looking for further off that. Can improve third-up.

9. Tobaysure is on the seven-day turnaround after a third to El Patroness, which is no crime. Won the start prior, but a strong 2000m is a query.

2. Golden Crusader is no star (has been superbly placed), but is flying and looks the likely leader.

Race 5 - 2:40PM No Fuss Event Hire Handicap Tips (1200m)

Selections: 13,1,5,12.

In about the most open race on the card, local galloper 13. VAN ROY is not the worst at big odds. A lack of first-up and sprinting form on paper is a little misleading, as he nearly won fresh over 1000m at start two and over 1200m at The Valley, he got home nicely first-up last prep. Jump-out was decent and Damien Oliver rides.

1. Do Ya Punk is a classy four-year-old and one that can work through the grades over this off-season. Was specked fresh at Bendigo and only got clear late for third. Down in grade here, but his map is sticky.

Another four-year-old with upside is 5. Our Redente, who is trained on track by Jerome Hunter. Won four of six and beat a handy Stormbolt last prep.

12. Outback Action needed the run fresh and now drops in the weights for a rise in grade. Makes his own luck.

Race 6 - 3:20PM Quayclean Mornington Guineas Tips (1600m)

Selections: 7,3,4,2.

After an impressive win at start two, 7. TAPA CAPALL was then off the scene for 10 months. First-up at Sandown, he should've beaten Ebony King, who is no slouch and then in the Albury Guineas, he stuck on despite being on the wrong leg. That trip away would've brought him on and he's set to peak now third-up.

While a few others could be better suited at 1600m from Bendigo, the Guineas winner 3. Waltz On By still gets the nod from that key lead-up, with the well-bred filly only third-up there. Draws for another soft run.

4. Dashing was a good thing licked in the Morphettville Guineas, but then had every chance last start at Sandown. That form should hold up.

2. Grand Pierro will be strong at the end of 1600m. The Geelong Classic winner could be on a QLD Derby path.

Race 7 - 3:55PM Neds Hareeba Stakes Tips (1200m)

Selections: 1,6,7,5.

While 1. JIGSAW still needs to bounce back off a heavy defeat, that Group 1 William Reid flop has to be forgiven, as he was taken on in a mad dash that was set up for the off-speed brigade, with all of the on-pace runners dropping out. His prior form was terrific for this race and here, he should get his own way up front.

Given the on-speed/inside bias at Bendigo on April 1, 6. Bless Her was enormous there first-up, as one of the very few on that meeting to really rattle home out wide. Now has a soft draw and carries 6kg less here.

Gun Tasmanian sprinter 7. Turk Warrior is an interesting runner here. He has plenty of class and looks likely to settle outside of Jigsaw early.

5. She's All Class broke a big drought last start and she's been kept fresh. Short enough at sub $5.

Race 8 - 4:35PM Neds Mornington Cup Tips (2400m)

Selections: 5,7,12,1.

With genuine Group 1 WFA form 5. HEZASHOCKA has to be the starting point. He was beaten just over two lengths in the Australian Cup second-up when held-up at stages and then last start in a hot Queen Elizabeth, he was very competitive when sticking on fourth. Should run 2400m off that, especially back at this level.

Ridden cold over the Rosehill 2000m, 7. Fancy Man got home well in restricted room fresh prior to contesting the Easter Cup at Sandown, where he raced keenly. This a looks a target to get him into the Caulfield Cup.

Arriving here off a second-up Yarra Valley Cup win, 12, Port Philip is still on the up. His Bendigo Cup run behind High Emocean puts him in the mix.

2019 Melbourne Cup winner 1. Vow And Declare could easily get away with this. He's racing consistently.

Race 9 - 5:10PM Catanach's Jewellers Handicap Tips (1600m)

Selections: 8,4,14,11.

Had 8. TYPHOON HARMONY not been plain last Sat, then he's much shorter here. Reportedly didn't handle the wet track and to be fair, Pinstriped belted them. Ran on well fresh, while he beat Munamek in Dec and placed behind Pounding the start prior. That's nice form for this and he's got a good record at Mornington.

Off strong jump-out's, we were with 4. Flossing first-up at Sandown, where he loomed ominously before fading right out. He pulled up with a slow recovery there, so there were excuses and he can improve.

Third-up and to 1600m, 14. Maracana shouldn't be far away now off a strong chasing effort at Sandown. She'll likely get right back again, though.

11. Maktoob has upside, although it was just a win at Sandown and this is harder. Way too short at $2.50.
