Moonee Valley Tips January 27

Race 1 - 12:15PM Ladbroke It! Handicap Tips (1500m)

Best: 1. Acid Wash. He was terrific on debut when getting home and while staying at 1200m perhaps worked against him at start two, he still should have won that Flemington race.

Acid Wash atoned for that defeat by bolting in the Cranbourne last start over 1400m, where he cruised to the line and recorded a 5.75 length victory.

Two winners have already been produced from that January 5 maiden and it will be interesting to see what the betting does late, as Cognac In Mine also looks very promising.
Value: 5. Mawhera. The late betting drift was a surprise ahead of his first-up assignment at Cranbourne, where the son of Darci Brahma pulled away for a nice win.

Mawhera didn't beat a whole lot in that return, but he's a three-year old who is heading in the right direction and he can absorb pressure if it's a strong mile.

He's got the tactical speed to push forward under Luke Currie and with Boondocks a likely scratching (raced on Thursday), he may land outside of leader early.

Race 2 - 12:45PM Ascend Sales Trophies Challenger Handicap Tips (1600m)

Best: 4. Ceerseven. This is a very average affair and while there map queries, especially with a 3kg claimer on who is still learning, the best horses often win these Saturday BM70's.

Ceerseven was the eye-catcher of a 1400m BM70 at Geelong on January 6, where he got a long way off them and the form has been okay through around that quinella.

Quality wise, I don't see a whole lot in this race, where a lot of exposed rivals are at their ceiling and with even luck, the $2.40 fav with ChaseBet looks an obvious on-top selection.

Value: 11. Wealdstone. There was some depth to the 0-64 that he contested fresh at Seymour and being first-up off a decent spell, the market took a set against him there.

It was still a nice resumption though and Wealdstone should have finished a little closer in that 1400m affair and he was specked following that at Cranbourne.

He was never winning contention in that last start effort when back via a leader dominated event and as a lightly rice four-year-old, he's one of the few here with upside.

Race 3 - 1:20PM Entry Education Handicap Tips (1600m)

Best: 5. Fire Of Etna. From a betting perspective, it's probably the least appealing race on the entire program, however, Fire Of Etna can improve third-up off a flat run.

The four-year-old was perhaps written a touch close at Flemington, where she was keen in the run and while that took her sprint away, she was only beaten two lengths.

Perhaps the fresh victory took the edge off her, as she sustained a long and wide run at Seymour affair, where she was resuming off a long break.

Value: 3. Dane On Tour. This five-year-old is coming out of the same Flemington race as Fire Of Etna and Dane On Tour stuck on in that affair when she was beaten half a length.

That came off the back of a big Caulfield win second-up, where she pulled away late after being briefly challenged and she's back to BM70 grade on Saturday.

She may have even been looking for further off that last start performance, however, the daughter of Rebel Dane is fit and in form, and she makes her own luck on the speed.

Race 4 - 1:55PM Simpson Construction Handicap Tips (1600m)

Best: 2. Running By. This Ciaron Maher-trained mare looked the good thing of the December 16 Caulfield card and after heavy market support, she recorded a tradesmanlike victory.

There was a lot more merit to the third-up performance at Randwick, as she did plenty of work to find the lead and she'll likely get a softer trail this time.

The runner-up was taking ground off her late, bur he was entitled to off a soft run and this looks another winnable race for a galloper who is working through the grades.
Value: 8. Typhoon Harmony. The seven-year old doesn't win out of turn, although he's often thereabouts and after a handful of even efforts, he went close at Flemington on January 13.

Typhoon Harmony was exposed at shade early in that affair, which might well have cost him the race, albeit the winner spotted him 5kg on that occasion.

His last victory was over this track/trip, where the gelding defeated Munhamek and Beltoro, which is great reading for this and he maps for a soft run here.

Race 5 - 2:30PM Happy 50th Jeff Waters Handicap Tips (1200m)

Best: 2. Extratwo. Another Ciaron Maher mare who is well placed on Saturday is this daughter of Toronado, who looks ready to go off to jump outs and this isn't much of a race.

While she was technically disqualified due to the Wiremu Pinn saga, she won three of her first four starts in her second prep before an end of campaign run in September.

Those victories included a first-up demolition job in a Kyneton maiden before taking out a Sandown BM78 against the three-year old fillies, which wasn't a bad race.

Value: 10. Tango Jewel. Although she's likely to have some company in what looks a high pressure affair, Tango Jewel has the fitness platform to absorb that.

The Jamie Edwards trained-mare has three runs under her belt and back to 1200m after being touched off by a useful Lang Park, she's better placed back against own sex.

An honest type who should suit Mooney Valley given her jump-and-run style, Tango Jewel only goes up 2kg despite losing a 3kg claimer for the experienced Craig Williams.

Race 6 - 3:05PM Ranvet Travis Harrison Cup Tips (2040m)

Best: 7. Mystery Island. Five of these seven acceptors are coming out of the Coastal Classic at Geelong and Mystery Island was arguably the least suited of all those runners.

After a strong first-up win in the Woodford Cup, he appeared a little more dour a second-up staying at 1700m, where he lacked a turn-of-foot after being going back early.

His closing splits were still respectable and now from a low draw over a more suitable journey, the seven-year old should be able to settle closer to the speed this time.

Value: 2. Don't Doubt Dory. The eye catcher of that Coastal Classic was Don't Doubt Dory and with no second-up form following a plain return, that last effort came as a surprise.

With good fresh stats, more was expected first-up on Boxing Day, but as an older galloper now, he's perhaps one that's more a 2000m type as a prep wears on.

He came off a worse performance when taking out the Wangaratta Cup third-up last time and while it was over a mile a few back years back, he has won at The Valley.

Race 7 - 3:40PM Chandler Macleod Handicap Tips (2040m)

Best: 10. Interlinked. At the price, I'm prepared to give interlinked another look, with the sole three-year-old in the field on the third line of betting following his first defeat at start three.

The son of Savabeel showed promise with victories at starts one and two, and there were some excuses in that Flemington run last start when finishing fourth with 60kg.

After being shuffled back in a muddling run affair, he then had to do some early work just to get into into proceedings, which left him one-paced late in his first 2000m tilt.

Value: 1. Blue Cup. It's been a long winning drought for Blue Cup, but win four is not too far away going off his last two performances, which included a fourth over this track/trip two back.

He has a big weight swing on Miss Tarzy from that clash, while the form has been franked from his January 10 run at Sandown, with Star Vega winning again on Wednesday.

From a middle draw and with all of the other speed influences drawn to his outside, Blaike McDougall should be able to get cover in a stalking position.

Race 8 - 4:20PM Lawn Rules Handicap Tips (1000m)

Best: 1. Philosopher. There's no doubting that Mornington Glory is flying and the fav rolled a smart one in Johnny Rocker last Saturday, however, Philisopher is the one to beat here.

Most of the form around the market elect come at Flemington and Sandown, and being deep into the prep on a backup, this looks a shot at the stamps.

On the other hand, Philosopher has had a perfectly planned out prep, with the son of Zoustar unbeaten in three runs for Enver Jusufovic and he'll lead this under Damian Lane.
Value: 3. Magic Max. This South Australian visitor isn't easy to catch and this prep reflects that, as he was mixing his form before a brilliant win at Murray bridge on December 30.

Magic Max was perhaps written a touch close when fourth-up over that same track/trip, although he's often put in those runs before bouncing back.

He's making his first Melbourne visit since a Caufield attempt back in April 2022, where he should have bolted and he does have the talent to win this.

Race 9 - 5:00PM Sharp EIT Solutions Australia Stakes Tips (1200m)

Best: 8. Veight. This colt does remind me a little of Hey Doc, another big and versatile McEvoy-trained galloper who was a strong miler early before switching to the sprinting caper as an older horse.

Two of his three wins have come fresh and after a somewhat plain second-up run last spring, the son of Grunt bounced with strong efforts in the Caulfield Guineas and Coolmore.

He has an in-form Damian Lane in the saddle and with all of the early speed drawn to his outside, they have plenty of options from barrier five, which is an ideal draw for him.

Value: 7. Zethus. Considering the amount of over-priced horses that fetch silly amounts on the Inglis Digital platform, 110k doesn't look a bad buy for Zethus, who is an ex-Godolphin galloper.

He's often been a horse to catch early in a campaign and that includes first-up win over this track/trip, while he has completed two solid jump-outs ahead of this return.

It's worth noting that the blinkers weren't on via either of his January workouts, but they're back on for race day and off what appears to be a soft map, he's not hopeless.

Race 10 - 5:40PM Piper-Heidsieck Handicap Tips (1200m)

Best: 6. Pereille. It took this Godolphin galloper seven starts to breakthrough, however, he was racing as a colt in those early days and he's form since being gelded has been consistent.

Pereille bolted in over this track/trip last winter, recording his second win in the process and he was enormous here the start prior vs a savage on-speed bias.

He gave 3.5kg to a fitter and progressive Union Army when runner-up at Rosehill first-up, where was inconvenienced a little and this BM78 is much weaker.

Value: 3. Bianco Vilano. You have to respect Ron Stubbs when he travels and the Albury trainer has a good recent record at The Valley, with four winners from seven starters here last season.

This is interesting placement with Bianco Vilano, as he had drawn better at both Wagga and Canberra, yet connections have decided to take the metro route.

Craig Williams going is a plus, as is the concussion plates coming off for this fresh assignment, so be wary of a potential set-up from an astute yard.
