Launceston Tips February 24
Neville-Smith Forest Products Maiden Tips (Race 2)
Launceston Roughie - Race 2 No. 11 Essex
It's an open race but at huge odds, this three-year-old could be a big improver returning for her second racing preparation after being tipped out following a debut flop on the Devonport Synthetic last September.
Off the back of a fair trial, the daughter of Rich Enuff was sent out as a $9 chance in that initial outing and in two hit-out's leading into this resumption, she travelled much stronger in the second heat when the blinkers were applied, which stay on for race day.
The early part of this feature Launceston program is quite a challenging period but with tactical speed and carrying just 53kg after the Codi Jordan claim, an apprentice jockey which has ridden 10 winners on this circuit, Essex isn't hopeless.
Steve’s Liquor Mowbray Stakes Tips (Race 7)
Launceston Best Bet - Race 7 No. 2 Newhart
Under the Set Weights conditions of the Mowbray Stakes, it does look a race of two between this gelding and Mandella Effect while also including three-year-old Swoop Dog, who does look much better suited coming back to Launceston.
With the more conventional preparation of building towards this mile journey compared his main two threats who are both dropping back from staying trips after long campaigns, it does favour this classy gelding, who after carrying weight to win the Devonport Cup, bolted in with the Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes on February 7.
The five-year-old did put a big space on both Mystic Journey and Blaze Forth who did quinella the Ladbrokes Stakes prior to that event, and given he was a month between runs along with dropping to 1400m, Newhart can progress further now stepping to the mile on Wednesday.
Ladbrokes Launceston Cup Tips (Race 8)
Launceston Value Bet - Race 8 No. 2 Captain Cook
Outside the winner Double You Tee who he does have a decent weight swing on, this son of Dubawi delivered arguably the run of the Hobart Cup where without luck, he was still the pick of the on-pace runners, whacking away for fourth and holding off Toorak Affair, who had a much softer run in transit.
This ex-Waller runner has been ticking over well in three Tasmanian runs for the new yard, and hasn't had a whole lot go his way in any of those outings, where following a nice return over a mile, found a leader-dominated affair when stepping straight to the 2200m.
The main query is whether Captain Cook runs out a strong 2400m, but from barrier two this time around where he draws for a much softer run near the speed, is a big price considering he should get a lot more favours in this feature.
Armidale Stud Vamos Stakes Tips (Race 9)
Launceston Next Best Bet - Race 9 No. 1 Deroche
Beaten as a $1.35 favourite in the Bow Mistress Stakes was this talented mare who was bolting approaching the top of the straight and given that was her first bad run in 16 career starts, she's a decent enough price to forgive against what is similar opposition.
Deroche failed to respond to riding in the run home with the post-race veterinary examination revealing her to be stiff in both front legs, and that did follow a second-up effort here she broke the track record here over 1100m, so it's only one failure to ignore.
With eight victories from 11 starts at Launceston and winning her last four attempts on this circuit, including the 2020 edition of this race, she retains the services of Craig Newitt who will likely roll forward on what is still the mare to beat in this Group Three.

Verdict
Newhart was dominant last start and is well placed to record a winning hat-trick in Race 7 from Launceston this Wednesday.
Defending Vamos Stakes winner Deroche was too bad to be true last start and can bounce back in Race 9.
Essex (Race 2) and Captain Cook (Race 8) both make some each-way appeal at big odds.
