Ipswich Tips February 5
Great Northern QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate Tips (Race 2)
Ipswich Best Bet - Race 2 No. 5 Cool Moon
The daughter of Cool Aza Beel had just one barrier trial prior to making her debut in a six runner Doomben maiden last month.
That trial saw her finish just over four lengths behind the winner when fourth over 850m at Gold Coast at the end of December.
The filly performed well when a length second having jumped at $4 for a 1110m maiden on her first official start.
Settled in fourth that day the pick kept on nicely in the closing stages in the style of a filly who would appreciate the step up in distance she gets here.
Toby Edmonds & Stephen McLean’s representative has been allocated an inside barrier which is a positive in this contest and she is expected to have improved for that debut experience.
Connections have opted to apply blinkers for the first time here and she looks capable of breaking through for her first win with Andrew Mallyon retaining the ride.
Schweppes Maiden Handicap Tips (Race 3)
Ipswich Value Bet - Race 3 No. 10 Liparota
The three-year-old has demonstrated a liking for this venue in the past including when runner-up here on debut in May last year.
While disappointing that the filly hasn’t been able to build on that effort with a win in the interim it’s of note that her next three starts all came at Doomben or Eagle Farm.
The pick recorded good efforts in her first three starts this time around including twice on wet tracks over this track and trip.
The second of those efforts saw her beaten just over a length when fourth on a soft 5 surface having finished third on a heavy 8 before that.
The good 4 track was possibly against her when failing to shine in finishing eighth in set weights maiden here last time while barrier ten and racing wide were further negatives.
Kelly Schweida is a regular in the winners’ enclosure here and jumping from barrier three his filly looks value to record her first win.
Barrier Reef Pools Class 5 Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Ipswich Roughie - Race 5 No. 4 Centre Bounce
Matthew Dunn’s mare was a dual winner at this venue in 2024 with both of those victories coming over this course and distance.
The second of those wins saw her get home by a narrow margin when racing on a soft 5 surface in Benchmark 68 handicap company and she is expected to encounter similar going here.
The pick is without a win since then however it’s notable that she is a combined 0/8 with just one third place to her name from her first and second up efforts.
The daughter of Star Turn won third up last prep and arrives here on the back of two solid efforts this time around including when finishing sixth at Eagle Farm last time.
The selection was beaten five lengths into sixth when contesting a 1400m Benchmark 70 handicap at Eagle Farm with a number of her rivals that day running well since and she is taken to surprise here.
Lemsecco Class 1 Handicap Tips (Race 7)
Ipswich Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Switchblade
Trainer Stephen Matthews has made a good start to his training career boasting a 25% strike-rate (4/16) since saddling his first runner at Toowoomba in June last year.
The pick joined the handler prior to this prep having demonstrated ability in Victoria for Mick Price & Michael Kent.
The four-year-old resumed with a good length second in a 1200m maiden held on a soft 7 track at Toowoomba.
The gelding duly went one better at his local venue when saluting by over three lengths in a 1350m maiden at the same track two weeks later.
The selection impressed when racing on a good 3 track that day and performed well from a wide barrier when two-and-a-half-lengths third over 1350m at Doomben last month.
The son of More Than Ready had a couple of his rivals here behind him that day and with a better alley here the tactically versatile gelding looks up to recording the second win of his career.
