Great Northern Maiden Handicap Tips (Race 1)

Ipswich Next Best Bet - Race 1 No. 1 Perigean

The three-year-old showed ability in two starts for Michael Freedman in his first prep racing including when sixth over 1000m in a Goulburn maiden just under a year ago.

However, the gelding has demonstrated improved form since joining the Tony Gollan stable placing second in a couple of maiden races at this circuit.

The first of those saw the pick lose out by just over half-a-length when racing close to the speed over 1100m on a soft 5 track last month.

The selection went on to fill the same spot when employing similar tactics in being beaten just over two-and-a-half-lengths stepped up to 1200m at the start of this month.

The son of Extreme Choice had to overcome a wide barrier when again racing on a soft 5 surface.

Ryan Maloney, on board for both starts this prep is again in the saddle with his mount looking capable of taking the opener.

XXX Benchmark 78 Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Ipswich Value Bet - Race 5 No. 10 Chasing Jackley

The gelding has shown a liking for this venue in the past finishing in the top three in half of his eight starts at the track.

Those starts include a third-place finish in a Class 5 event over 1680m when racing on a sound surface in November last year.

The pick was subsequently placed second at Doomben when racing in a Benchmark 85 handicap eight days later prior to failing to shine over 1600m at Eagle Farm.

The six-year-old resumed this prep with a down the field effort when jumping at $61 for a 1200m Benchmark 65 handicap on a heavy 9 surface here last month.

However, the step up in distance saw the gelding deliver an improved effort when beaten a length over 1500m at Warwick earlier this month.

The selection contested a Benchmark 70 handicap when a change of tactics saw him race from the front that day and he looks value to build on that with a win here.

Ipswich Best Bet - Race 6 No. 7 Cottee

Trainer Mark Currie boasts a near 31% strike-rate (30/97) when teaming up with jockey Angela Jones and the pair combine with the four-year-old here.

The selection has contributed four of those victories with Jones's sole defeat on the filly coming when racing at Listed level at Doomben in April last year.

The daughter of Merchant Navy demonstrated improved form when last in action earlier this season following up a Toowoomba second with two metro wins at Eagle Farm.

The second of those wins saw the pick come home one-and-a-half-lengths clear of her rivals in a similar race to this over 1600m.

The filly was spelled following that success and has the benefit of a barrier trial effort having finished last of five over 900m at Beaudesert earlier this month.

The pick gets in off a nice racing weight here and looks up to scoring on her first start of 2024.

Ipswich Feature Bet - Race 8 No. 2 Hiyaam Proud

The gelding has demonstrated plenty of ability in his two starts to date winning on each occasion including at Geelong last month.

The son of Pride Of Dubai came home over a length clear of his rivals when contesting a 1500m maiden on a good 4 surface.

The third home that day has gone on to win since while a number of the other beaten horses have registered placed efforts in the interim period.

The selection went on to maintain his unbeaten record when racing on the speed prior to taking out a Benchmark 70 handicap at Eagle Farm earlier this month.

The youngster proved that he handlers wet tracks when successful on a soft 7 surface that day and any softening of the going prior to race time would prove no issue.

Matt Laurie’s representative has a decent barrier in seven here and while he is stepping up in grade he is selected to maintain his unbeaten record.
