Happy Valley Tips April 21

Pottinger Handicap Tips (Race 1)

Happy Valley Next Best Bet - Race 1 No. 1 Golden Spectrum

Zac Purton and Tony Cruz combine in the opener at Happy Valley with Golden Spectrum, who prevailed over the 1800m at Happy Valley last July before stepping up to Class 2 level this season.

While he was mostly competitive in that grade, coming back that notch gives him a chance of a return to the winner's stall, especially against Arrogant as the favourite, a galloper with one win from 26 starts and he's had plenty of chances at this level.

Shuffled back and losing ground via his last start effort before making late inroads for third, he should've finished much closer on March 10 and the engagement of Purton for this winnable assignment is a big positive.

Edinburgh Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Happy Valley Value Bet - Race 5 No. 2 Pure Legend

This four-year-old has been mostly thereabouts without threatening over a few Hong Kong campaigns now and was building quite well before the April 5 attempt, where he was coming back Class 3 to Class 4 company.

He found a good trailing position on that occasion, however, found himself off the bridle at the top of the straight in a race set up for those making ground, but he did manage to stick on fairly for an eventual fourth-placed finish.

They are still trying to work out what his preferred distance is, but now at peak fitness with a 1600m effort under the belt and with the ability to settle on speed, Pure Legend can give a sight in what is the weakest event he's seen in Hong Kong.

Pedder Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Happy Valley Favourite - Race 7 No. 6 Spicy So Good

Zac Purton and Danny Shum have combined for 29 winners over the last 12 months at a very good strike rate of 25%, and they team up again on this three-year-old who was brave on March 10.

Rebounding off a disappointing Hong Kong debut in December, Spicy So Good showed good speed to take up the running over that 1000m dash and although was run down late, he was clearly the pick of the on-pace runners, beaten just half a length on the line.

Freshened-up following that performance, this gelding has been kept up to the mark with a nice trial win on April 13 and from a low draw, just needs a shade more improvement at start three to be giving this a shake.

Queen's Road Central Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Happy Valley Best Bet  - Race 8 No. 1 Capital Star

Going by the name 'Classy Jaybee' when campaigning in Australia, this son of Danerich showed plenty of potential over two campaigns down under and was seemingly improving with every outing, leaving off the back a strong victory in Adelaide over 1200m.

Leading Hong Kong trainer Caspar Fownes prepares this gelding who following an eye-catching Hong Kong debut on January 13, led throughout to safely account for Igniting and Scores Of Fun, with both of those gallopers winning their next outings in this grade.

Although defeated as favourite on March 10, he was pestered up front throughout by California Concord who did tail off to finish at the rear and the April 13 trial win from Capital Star suggested he was back on track.
