Gold Coast Tips January 13

Race 1 - 11:20AM Magic Millions Country Cup Tips (1200m)

Best: 6. Hodgson. This is generally an open affair and the 2024 edition is no exception, where plenty of winning chances clash in the Magic Millions Country Cup.

At each-way price, I don't mind this setup for Hodgson, a local who has won two of four starts on his home track and the December 17 return at the Sunshine Coast was encouraging.

Back in trip to 1000m off a big freshen-up, he recorded the fastest fast 800m/600m and 400M of that race, while he draws kinder and carries 5.5kg less here.

Value: 3. Circularity. A galloper who was fringe Saturday class in Brisbane when prepared by the Freedman's, Circularity has won three races since joining the Lindsey Hatch stable.

Although he won a lead-up trial in nice style after bolting in before a spell, the market drift first-up at Warwick suggested he'd need that run.

While that was correct, it was still a nice blowout with this affair in mind and on what is ideally a drying surface, he now gets the services of James Orman.

Race 2 - 11:55AM Magic Millions The Debut 2yo Fillies Tips (1000m)

Best: 9. Too Darn Lizzie. This is the second foal from Group 2 winner Enbihaar, who has produced Extremely Wicked, a speedster who did show some promise early.

A typical Waterhouse & Bott, jump-and-run juvenile, Too Darn Lizzie looks the most logical selection, although it's not the easiest race to work out.

She jumped and crossed under her own leisure when leading throughout to win a Warwick Farm trial in nice style on December 22 and Tim Clark stays aboard from that.

Value: 5. Froebel Star. I wouldn't be shocked if she's the best horse to come from this race in time, a Maher & Eustace-trained filly who appears to have some class going off her trials.

Although she was a little green, Froebel Star improved off her first outing to win a Wyong trial on December 15 and the time was good for the two-year-old's that morning.

She has the experienced Mark Zahra aboard for Saturday's debut and the daughter of Zousain has been respected in the early markets.

Race 3 - 12:30PM Magic Millions The Debut 2yo C&G Plate Tips (1000m)

Best: 10. The Hamo. Hulbert racing forked out just 80K for The Hamo in last year's Gold Coast Magic Millions March Sale and he heads the betting for this 500K affair.

A lovely, strong type by Better Than Ready, he couldn't have been more impressive when taking out a Doomben trial on December 19 in fast time for the morning.

Not only did he better the times of the two and three-year-old trials, but his 840m heat went around 2.5 lengths faster than the trial of Golden Boom, who is stakes class.

Value: 11. Li'l Rex. A full brother to Listed winner In His Stride, first emergency Li'l Rex is now in this event following the scratching of Balastier.

Behind MIshani Express, who has shown some potential, the David Murphy-trained colt was kept under a firm hold when third in a Deagon trial on October 3.

We haven't seen him publicly since then, however, he did show clear potential and in a very open race, a market push at a longer price wouldn't shock here.

Race 4 - 1:05PM $1m Racing Qld Magic Millions Qtis Open Tips (1300m)

Best: 1. Rothfire. While he didn't quite deliver on the early promise due to an injury sustained in a Golden Rose, Rothfire has still been an excellent galloper for connections.

Freshened up ahead of his King Of The Mountain attempt on New Year's Day, he didn't salute by far as an odds-on fav, but it was a better win than the margin indicates.

The six-year-old faced a stiff head breeze when settling outside the leader with 60kg, yet still had enough in reserve late, but he's all ideally wanting to upgrade or two in the track.
Value: 2. Alpine Edge. The Edmonds-trained entire won this race last year and while he was well held second-up ahead of this edition, it was perhaps a hidden run.

Alpine Edge recorded the fastest last 400m of that Listed Falvelon Stakes on December 23 and now third-up over an extra 100m, that performance should top him off nicely.

He's often saved his best for this day, as aside from a two-length victory 12 months ago, he got home for second in the 2YO Classic back in 2021.

Race 5 - 1:40PM $1m Magic Millions Subzero Tips (2200m)

Best: 3. Zennzella. Not only does she bring the best last-start figure in this race, Zenznzella strikes me as the only progressive horse in this staying event and she's only third-up here.

A Group 2 Wakeful winner in the spring of 2022, the four-year-old didn't come up in a short autumn prep last year, but she's clearly back to her best this time in.

After sustaining a wide and early run, it was still a rather soft win on the line at Caulfield on Boxing Day and there's a platform to improve further off that over 2200m now.

Value: 2. Warning. Although he's never been an easy horse to catch for punters, Warning has been a great horse for owners, with the four-time stakes winner approaching 2.5 million in prize money.

While he hasn't saluted in a long time, the seven-year-old was still racing consistently and he did catch the eye on return with a big fresh run at Flemington.

It was almost first-up again when contesting the 2000 Summer Cup on Boxing Day, with that Randwick run the warm-up for what looks a target race.

Race 6 - 2:15PM $1m TAB Magic Millions The Syndicate Tips (1100m)

Best: 2. Eleven Eleven. This is arguably the most open race on the entire card, where there's plenty of speed engaged in an evenly matched field and that could suit this veteran.

Eleven Eleven is making his fifth appearance on this famous program, having won a few times over longer trips, but fourth-up this year, he drops in distance for this 1100m tilt.

They were excuses last start at Doomben, where he covered ground when off the speed in a race that suited the on-speed brigade and he should be respected at big odds.

Value: 9. Helluva Baby. Another long-priced who should be suited by a good tempo is this four-year-old, who was a beaten fav last start in BM80 company.

Although he hasn't proven himself in this sort of grade, Helluva Baby is a horse with plenty of upside, with the gelding set for only start 10.

He's often dangerous when kept fresh, so the five-week between run pattern is a positive and with a tow into this late, he's among the blowout hopes.

Race 7 - 2:50PM $1m Live In Qld Magic Millions Snippets Tips (1200m)

Best: 8. Hard To Say. He's a sprinter that's always shown plenty of potential and now as a more seasoned four-year-old, Hard To Say is starting to put it all together.

The son of Exceed And Excel has worked through the grades nicely this season, winning four from four and he's been freshened since his Randwick triumph on November 7.

He's since completed an excellence barrier trial on January 5 and although he hasn't ticked the 1200m box, he was wide throughout via his only other try at the trip.
Value: 1. Baller. He's failed in his last few Magic Millions attempts, however, the setup this year is different,l with the gelding arriving off a lighter campaign.

He was good late in the Group 3 George Moore on December 2 despite never being in winning contention and he's being freshened up again ahead of this.

Given the lead-up, this does appear to be a clear target assignment for the Tony Gollan-rained sprinter, who maps for a soft run behind the speed under James Orman.

Race 8 - 3:35PM $3m The Star Magic Millions 2yo Classic Tips (1200m)

Best: 1. Storm Boy. He was a dominant debut winner and the form has been franked from that Rosehill event, with Traffic Warden (runner-up) saluting by 1.5 lengths at Caulfield via his next start.

After a comfortable victory recorded in the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes on December 23, Storm Boy firmed into outright favouritism for this juvenile feature.

Class often comes to the fore in this juvenile feature and in an edition that appears light on for depth, the son of Justify is clearly the one to beat in the 2024 Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Value: 12. Jenni's Meadow. As mentioned, I'm not convinced that there's much depth in the 2024 Magic Millions 2YO Classic field and this Victorian debut winner still has plenty of upside.

Jenni's Meadow had worked well ahead of her Moonee Valley assignment on December 30, however, I felt she was always going to improve off whatever she delivered there.

The Hayes-trained filly sustained a strong run from off the speed and the most impressive part of that victory was her fight late when denying a runner-up who did no work.

Race 9 - 4:20PM $3m Magic Millions 3yo Guineas Tips (1400m)

Best: 1. Cifrado. He was underrated over the Brisbane Carnival as a late two-year-old, recording back-to-back Group 2 victories before his sixth of 17 finish in the Group 1 JJ Atkins.

Cifrado defeated Chrysaor (fav) by just under a length in that feature and the Rex Lipp-trained galloper went past the same rival when taking out the Vo Rogue Plate.

He has been building towards that December 30 outing well, with his only flop coming second-up at Listed level against older rivals, where a slow recovery was noted post-race.

Value: 9. Veecee. Despite enjoying success in the 2YO Classic, the Maher & Eustace stable is searching for their first Guineas win and their representative this year is sneaking under the radar.

It's been all about getting the son of Capitalist to peak on this day and the prep has reflected that, with the colt completing some modest work ahead of his Caulfield resumption.

He's bounced off that eye-catching third on December 16 to complete a rather slick workout at Warwick Farm on January 2 and the rise to 1400m second-up looks ideal.

Race 10 - 4:55PM $1m Jewel Magic Millions Cup Tips (1400m)

Best: 2. Far Too Easy. While he's a versatile type, who has saluted over most trips up to seven furlongs, the upper end of that distance range is what he needs at this stronger level.

Far Too Easy was backed as if unbeatable on December 16 when fresh and he recorded his first stakes win in style there when bolting in at Eagle Farm.

The main query is what is seemingly a horror draw, however, he was likely going to get back anyway and he's still the one to beat providing the wider lanes are okay.
Value: 16. Perfect Thought. The John Sargent stable can be a tricky one to catch for punters, although when it comes to peaking for target races, they regularly get it right.

A galloper who was Group 2 placed behind a smart Kovalica in the QLD Guineas, Perfect Thought resumed with a cracking effort over 1200M at Listed level on December 9.

Why he was a touch flat second-up, it was still a decent hit-out with this in mind and while he's a big price, the four-year-old does have a touch of class.

Race 11 - 5:30PM TAB Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Tips (1300m)

Best: 3. Lady Laguna. James MacDonald has ridden the last two winners of this Magic Millions Fillies & Mares feature and he can make it a hat-trick on this year's fav.

A daughter of Overshare, who has always been a very genuine galloper, Lady Laguna has improved in her four-year-old season and she does handle all track conditions.

She progressed off a solid return to win on December 30, where she had an economical run, although this is no harder and that last run is the best last-start figure in this field.

Value: 8. Lady Of Luxury. She started much shorter in this race last year after winning seven days prior and while Lady Of Luxury failed there, it was at the back end of a long prep.

Bjorn Baker has kept her fresher for this year's tilt, arriving here third-up and she out-performed Junqueira (third fav) first-up at Randwick in what was effectively a trial.

Tearaway leaders can often make races messy, which was the case second-up where she carried 61kg and she's down to 55.5kg for her target assignment.
